I'm not sure about that -- both my ToM and BoP gear boxes had grease on the gears when I opened them up. The BoP was rivetted shut, so I know it was factory. It both cases, the grease had become hard, tacky, and discolored. Cleaning and re-lubing (axel points and gears) made a world of difference.
