Even though mine's pretty beat up, it's still a blast to play!

Quoted from CaptainNeo:all the art on the entire upper half of the playfield. Looks completely different now.
Would love to see this.
Quoted from Pauz21:You're definately a candidate my friend. Even though it's not perfect you'd be happy with it. By the way... are your ramps semi-transparent? They look like I can see through them in the pic. Mine are solid black.
My ramps are solid black. I was just too lazy to take the glass off to take that pic, so you're seeing a reflection of the backglass. At $40 I'm definitely interested in one of these, especially if the drop target decals get printed as you described.
Got my plastics last week. No extra slings. But you do get the super rare (according to the 3 on ebay) keychain!
Quoted from mof:Has anyone done some fine-tuned tweaking of settings to increase the difficulty of the game? I'd like to increase the difficulty, so that 1-2 mil is a real accomplishment.
Here are some things I'm considering:
1. remove the easy-backhand on the cave horseshoe -- tweak the upper flipper to have less range of motion.
2. install -- hard settings
3. get pitch to 6.5' -- right now I'm at 5' and the live catch is too easy from the spinner.
4. remove the center post? (Is that crazy?)
5. 2 max extra balls
6. Just 1 earned extra ball at 1,000,000.
Has anyone set up a really tough GL ?
-mof
I wouldn't call mine "tough", but many visitors do. Only 3 people have broken 1 million on it, and I'm the only one to break 2 million (my high is around 4.5 million), but that's not saying much.
1. I always try for the 50,000 bonus up right after each cave loop...
2. Mine are close to factory.
3. I raised my leg levelers on the back legs to max and lowered the fronts to minimum. It's fun.
4. No. It's part of the game.
5. Yes.
6. Change your reward for 1,000,000 to credit.
7. Wax that sumbitch.
Quoted from KevInBuffalo:That's what mine does, yeah.
My buzz was drastically reduced after installing LEDs in all of my inserts.
Quoted from Pinfatuated:I commissioned Paul Faris to create art for a plastics set that matches the art of the playfield and proto / pre-production backglass both of which Faris created the art for. I have not had time to get it scanned or look at getting plastics printed, nor am I sure when I will get the time. How much interest is there in alternate plastics? I would think that a limited run would be around $200 each +/- $50, but who knows.
I'd have to see em before committing to buy...
Finally got around to installing the upper playfield decal I've had laying around for 3 years and 3 days... Spent a good six hours on the ol' Grand Lizard. My upper playfield was beat to shit, though not the worst example I've seen...

Partially torn down...

Also grabbed a playfield protector to install after the decal was installed. I used it as a template to cut out the decal for the cave.

My pattern next to the original template.

When I originally got the decal, parts of it lifted from the backing from being shipped rolled up in a mailing tube. After years of sitting, the lifted areas had zero adhesion. This resulted in a few wrinkles after application, but still a thousand times better than bare wood! And the playfield protector will give a perfectly smooth surface. Anyway, right after installation...

After the playfield protector...

She's a completely different animal now! Plays fast and smooth, and now she looks good! Second playfield protector I've installed. First was on Gorgar. I'm really digging 'em!
Quoted from Pauz21:Hey guys. Been a while since I've been in this thread as I sold the game years ago. I want it back. Was just combing thru and say this post from a year ago. Was this one of my decals? Looks good. I have sold lots but never hear or see the finished product. Looks like you did a good job on the install.
Yeah, I think it was one of the first ones you made. It wasn't a perfect install, but it ended up WAY better than before! But like everything else in life... Shortly after installing the decal I scored a clear coated NOS playfield...
Quoted from Jerickso77:So what are your high scores? On default settings with the back legs at max I put up 8.4 million for my high. I don't use the magna saves because I need to work on my nudging skills.
Quoted from Xdetroit:I created a Grand Lizard topper for a friend if mine and I thought I’d share with the group. This is just a mock-up but I should have pictures of the real thing soon. This is about 16” wide. I could also make one with just the lettering. I figured I’d post here to see if there any interest. If so, I can offer them for sale.

Depends on price, but I like it!
Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:Toppers don't need to reiterate the name of the game, guys. It's right there, below it.
Let people enjoy things.
All new inserts and sanded down for the hard top. Over half way there...
The red arrow inserts (not amber) were a bitch. Way oversized and took a ton of sanding down to fit. Bummer the little orange arrow inserts aren't available anymore. My least favorite part of this project has been picking out the old glue from the insert holes, but it was worth the trouble.

I'm not sure why 5/8 x 1 1/2" orange triangles aren't available anymore. Seems kind of crazy as most games have them.
The sanding disc kit I got went from 80 to 3000 grit. So I went all the way to 3000.
Quoted from ROMM:Those inserts look great and "blingy", and they don't even have any light under them in those pics. Nice!
Replacing the inserts was definitely needed. All the old ones were riddled with micro cracks and a couple were pretty much broken in place. Not the best pics, but here's something for comparison.
0730231416 (resized).jpg0810232133 (resized).jpg99% finished with this one. Just some minor tweaks to a couple switches and a few insert bulbs to address.
Coming up on owning this machine for 11 years now. Love the hardtop! It's so smooth compared to what it used to be.
This was a fun project! Thanks to Outside Edge for the hardtop, ibis for the repro rails, Pinball Life and Marco for odds and ends, M&M Creations for the magnetic reed switches, and wrd1972_PinDoc for the PinDoc rotisserie that made this project a breeze!

Is the decal that was talked about many years ago in this thread still available, or a good scan/image of the upper playfield in case I get the nerve to try a touch up ?
(and thanks for the LED feedback)
I did the decal several years ago with a playfield protector. It was definitely an improvement, but after a couple of years the protector started to warp and curl. Just hardtopped my GL last summer. Replaced all the inserts when I did the hardtop. Loving the hardtop. So far it's been well worth the work.
