Quoted from Phesson:Just joined the club. Cabinet 9/10, Backglass 5/10, Playfield 9/10, mylar on the upper and lower playfields and except for some flash lamps, backbox lights and the kick slings not working, everything else is in order. It’s time to work out the bugs and get her cleaned up. The pre production backglass is tempting. It’s that or replace the the original art.

First, congrats on getting a GL without a chewed up upper PF. They are hard to find! Ref the backglass, the original one by Paul was nice. Python's is FUGLY and does not really go 100% with Paul's PF art but it's such an anomaly that I decided to leave it as is. GL is a fun game. Just old fashioned pinball from the days before you needed a Masters degree just to figure out the rule set! I love the sound package.

They sure did. Pinshakers.

I am excited for this one. All the boards have gone out to the Coinop Cauldron to be refurbished. My teenaged daughter and I have been refurbishing the original backglass to see how it will look before shelling out the cash for a replacement. So far the results are promising!

Very nice.
Is that playfield original, or a Hardtop?

It is the prototype hardtop.
Just picked up a project Grand Lizard last night for a steal. GI and 3 displays come on but nothing else works. I can scroll through the test menus too. The board doesn't look like it has any battery damage. But now the fun begins figuring out what's up with it. I guess I'll start by reflowing the solder on the connections and see what happens next. I'll post pics in a few hours.
Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:RustyLizard Just saw your video on the production vs proto games. Nicely done.
Thank you. Jeremy did an outstanding job editing to help me look ok.

Definitely informative. I'd say I like the production sounds better. Any further thoughts on getting the proto plastics into reproduction?
Does Grand Lizard use the same System 11 legs as Pinbot? Just wanted to see if it was supposed to use the short rib or long rib.
Wow. I had no idea about the prototype design. Thank you for the info on the prototype game!!
Could you send some pics to IPDB to document the prototype design? I only saw some pics of the prototype backglass, not the rest of the prototype game that you have.
Quoted from Robotworkshop:Does Grand Lizard use the same System 11 legs as Pinbot? Just wanted to see if it was supposed to use the short rib or long rib.
Half rib system 11 legs.
In the manual I see the ring sizes needed but there isn't a quantity listed for each. Does anyone have a list of how many of each rings are needed of each size fo the game? Thinking of getting some superbands or other colored rings to go with the theme. Maybe green ones.
Just started setting up my game this evening. The head was removed when I got it with the hinge left on the cabinet. Anyone know the correct screw size to bolt the hinge to the head?

I found them! 1/4-20 carriage bolts and the nut has a serrated locking portion on one side. Need to pick up two new nuts. Going to try and get it mounted and everything connected so I can try it out and see what needs repairs. I plan on adding the two fuses on the inputs to the bridges soon.
Once I get the game running well I’ll order the stencil kit and plan on tearing it back apart to repair and repaint the cabinet. Should be a nice game after that.

Let me count the ways...
Stealing the extra ball from other players,
The lizard eye flashers and roar,
the monkey sounds from the spinner,
the upper playfield and.....
Magnasave!
Quoted from Robotworkshop:What do you enjoy most about this game?
Drumbeat background sound,
Drop targets,
Multiball!
Just got the game running last night. The issue with the trough was mechanical. The grease on the outhole assembly was completely solidified and it wouldn’t move. Just disassembling that and cleaning fixed it. Soldered a wire that broke off on the back box speaker and that now works.
Was able to play a few games and it has a good layout. This game plays a lot better than I expected.
Still have a few things to repair:
- Magna save magnets don’t appear to be working
- Lamps in the lizards eyes don’t light
- Need to remove the battery holder on the MPU and install NVRAM
- Txt appears to be in German. This was a reimport machine. May see if there is just an option for English text or I can burn the US ROM set
- Replace all the rubber rings and normal cleaning and waxing
- Replace some lamp sockets and bulbs
- Need to replace the small wood piece for the back of the neck and install the missing latch.
Quoted from Robotworkshop:- Txt appears to be in German. This was a reimport machine. May see if there is just an option for English text or I can burn the US ROM set
You should be able to change that in the menu adjustments. Adjustment 51 is English/German.
Quoted from AJGross:Your back box was removed. I bet you missed connecting the White wire with a red stripe back to the ground. There should be a wing nut inside the back box where it connects. It took me a while to figure that out on my GL.
You are correct! The head was removed and that wire is disconnected. Will get that connected and try it again. That would explain it. Thank You!
It looks like my machine has L-3 ROM's in it now. From the IPDB.ORG it looks like there is a newer L-4 version. Anyone know what changed or if anything was fixed in the L-4 version? What version is everyone running in your games?
for me it is the sounds. This game comes alive when in the zone . if you get this game dialed in ,you are in for some fun even with what seems a small amount to do.
I never tire of the upper playfield targets
Quoted from Robotworkshop:It's alive! Seems like it has an issue detecting the switch closure on the outhole but will clean those tonight, Seems like this game has a good layout and will be fun once cleaned up and working.

Rolled it multiple times.
Does anyone have a picture of the correct latch assembly for the back of the head? Need to order some parts from Marco and want to order the right version.
Thank you!
Quoted from AJGross:Latch: 20-9347
Bracket: 01-8397
Thank you! Parts are on the way. Still need to order a Stencil kit to refresh the cabinet at a later date. That would make this example really nice.
One oddity is that the back of the neck has a cutout for the power cord yet the cord comes directly out the back. I guess that was a left over from earlier games and they still had neck pieces with the notch for the power cord to use up.
I had the game playing great now. Put on a fresh set of white rings and green flipper rubbers. Old battery holder removed (it was bad but no battery damage to PCB) and installed a socket and NVRAM in U25. Now it saves my settings and never have to worry about a leaking battery.
Does the bell ever get used? If so what triggers it? Is there a setting to turn it on or off? I haven’t heard that work yet.
As far as I can tell everything is working except for some flashlamps and maybe the bell. I ordered some #63 bulbs as this is the first game I’ve had that uses them. Some may just be burned out.
Are there schematics for the playfield? If so I may be missing those. Just wanted to see how the flash lamps are supposed to be wired. Do they have the resistor boards like the Pinbot use with the warming resistor? Could be just a broken lead on one of those. The lizard eyes flash in the back box but not in the lizard head on the playfield. Those bulbs are ok. Definitely want to fix those since it is a cool effect.
Quoted from Robotworkshop:Does the bell ever get used? If so what triggers it?
Yes, but it's infrequent. Trying to recall what triggers it and can't.
Yes, there are resisror boards for the flashers. They are on the bottom of the playfield for the playfield flashers.
63 bulbs seem to burn out pretty quickly.
Quoted from Robotworkshop:Does the bell ever get used?
When turning on game if errors are present bell rings and errors are displayed
Quoted from Robotworkshop:If so what triggers it? Is there a setting to turn it on or off? I haven’t heard that work yet.
Extra Ball and Special will both ring the Space Phone if set to on and the bell is working.
Quoted from Pinmeister:I have a nice GL I will be putting up for sale. Nice PF, retro and standard back glasses, and Xpin display. Also have NOS PF I am willing to sell with the game or separately after the game sells/
PM sent.
Is there a mistake in the manual for the flash lamps? The right magnet flash was burned out. Put in a new 63 bulb and it lit once and burned out. Tried another and same thing. Put in an 89 and it is fine now. Are the flashers for the magnets supposed to the 89 bulbs like my Pinbot?
I put two new 63 bulbs in the lizard eyes and now that lights up on the playfield ok.
Got the bell working too. Just dirty switch contacts. Now everything is working on the game again!
Just need to finish cleaning the waxing the playfield and it’s ready to play.
At some point I’ll probably think about repainting and stencil the cabinet to make it really nice.
Fun game.

Clive at CoinOp Cauldron is my go to; the work is excellent. He has repaired or reconditioned several of my boards for various older games. GL was my first restoration. I was still new to the “hobby” back then and replaced most of the boards with new ones from PinballPCB. They make outstanding boards but today I would have just sent the old boards to Clive. Much more cost effective and they come back as good as new.
