Just finished fixing a System 80B score display board in a Gottlieb "Chicago Cubs" machine. The lower score display had "garbage" (nonsense) characters all the way across the display glass. I found chip U2 (Rockwell # 10939) which controls the lower display to be bad. I replaced it with a new one and that cured the problem. I also installed a 40 pin socket for the new chip.

If you should have the same symptom, except that it is happening on the upper display, then chip U1 (also a 10939) is bad. U1 handles the upper score display.

I've added this information to the System 80 repair log at pinwiki since there is very little service information about the 80B displays.

Thanks Ken.
There's not much info because there isn't too much to that board.
Where did you find a 10939? That chip is unobtainium.

Found the chip on ebay from China for just $6 each. All the USA sellers wanted anywhere from $39 to $100 per chip to buy it. I didn't mind waiting two weeks to get the chip from China and it was genuine new old stock Rockwell with 1988 date codes!

It wasn't "unobtainium", just so many sellers overpricing it.

I wouldn't say "overpricing it" without knowing what the sellers paid for them.
Most of us sellers ... ok some of us sellers refuse to buy from these Chinese sources and end up paying more for parts. But yeah, $39 and up does sound a bit obscene unless those sellers paid an arm and six legs for them as well.
Unusual and nice to see a Chinese seller with genuine parts that have not been blacktopped and remarked with new date codes.

I'm sure there are many counterfeiters...

Eeesh... really bad and blobby black topping job on that one.

Just to get date codes straight..

Now made by Micrel Semiconductor as the MIC10939P-50

Actually, Micrel made them for a very brief period then dropped them. I contacted Micrel several years back trying to obtain some of their 10939's and 10941's -- NLA.

Hi guys. I just picked up a Bone Busters Inc. game from a friend. It's a system 80b game from 1989. My scoreboard is also displaying garbage characters on the upper and lower display. I don't really have any technical skills or knowledge when it comes to working on pinball machines so I don't really know how to go about getting it fixed. Would this be an expensive fix if I just called a pinball repair person to fix it? I bought the machine for $550 and I'm hoping not to have to put that much more into it.

Any info that may help me get pointed in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!
