So I've recently done a full restoration on a Shaq Attaq (Yes, really I've spent countless hours restoring a shaq pinball ), I had changed playfields and it is now all put back together and the only problem I have left that I can't seem to fix is the bottom left flipper. Basically it won't work at all and blows the fuse immediately.

What I think could be the problem -

I put in new coils for the flippers and had originally wired this one incorrectly when I put a new one in. I have since put in another new coil and wired correctly but still get the same problem.

I have put LED's throughout the machine, I understand sometimes Sys 3's don't like this especially flashers, so I've put standard bulbs back in the flashers.

The diode's look fine, the flipper sensor board looks fine, EOS switch is set up fine and the flipper button works fine. So I don't know if it is something else up the daisy chain of the flipper switches is that's possible. Everything worked perfectly fine prior to the restorations and playfield swap apart from the flippers being very weak.

Any ideas of what the next thing I can do for troubleshooting would be much appreciated so I can finally post a thread about the restoration.

First, check the coil resistance. Shaq uses a 29876 there with resistance of 2.36/202 ohms.
Next, check the fuse. It shojld be a 4ASB at F17.
Then, run switch edges test and make sure the flipper buttons are registering properly.

If all that is good you may have a problem with the lamp matrix causing you switch problems. Run the individual lamp test and look for ghosting. If so you could have problems with the switchs if there is ghosting.

Thanks, the first 3 are all good so I'll go through the lamp matrix. Cheers

With the power off check the wiring to ground. You may have pinched a wire in the process.

Cheers, I've gone through and changed out a lot of the LED bulbs and for some reason I've now blown the F7 Solenoids fuse.. so waiting on some more 8amp fuses to come in and I can start troubleshooting again!

back to the same left flipper not working problem... I've just hooked up a new coil, I didn't want to solder it until it worked so basically I tested it just with the wire wrapped around the lugs and it flipped once and then the fuse blew again. Is that potentially because it hasn't been soldered? Or should I be looking at the flipper switches? Any help would be much appreciated, I've put some picture of the new coil that I've wired up.

Your EOS switch doesn't look right to me but could be the lighting/angle.

I don't have a schematic for Shaq attack, so my comments are based on other System 3 machines, and I'm also assuming you've wired things properly.

Gottlieb flippers are about as basic as it gets. They never stepped into the modern age of solid state flippers. That means that there are only a couple of ways to blow a flipper fuse when you flip. You can have a a bad diode, a bad coil, or a closed end of stroke switch. You're telling us that the coil is wired properly and tested good, as is the diode. The only other option is an EOS switch that doesn't open when it should. Every other problem would blow a fuse whether the flipper switches are pressed or not.

My question is, which fuse number is blowing? If it's not the dedicated flipper fuse, the flipper may not be the problem.

It is the dedicated flipper fuse that is blowing, yesterday when it actually flipped was the first time normally it had been just blowing without even flipping until I changed the coil (I think I had previously wired it wrong). It did only flip once before blowing it.

Here are some better pictures of the EOS switch and the left flipper switch. And also a pic of the right flipper which is working fine for comparison.

Again thanks for the response guys.

The important question now is whether your EOS switches are opening properly. Post some photos of your EOS switch with the flippers up/active (move the flipper manually). Your EOS contacts look kind of scary, so it won't surprise me if they aren't gapped well.

It seems like im getting a clear open for the EOS. THe other thing I have just noticed is that on the flipper switch the two round things (Im not sure what they are) were touching, I have now moved them apart to match what the working right flipper switch looked like.

Update - It is working now, the only problem is the EOS switch is not separating properly at the EOS and makes a 'wurring' sound when the flipper is held up, I lifted the PF to make surethis was exactly the reason and you could clearly see the EOS switch was still touching when the flipper was held up. Hopefully once I fix the EOS Switch that will be my problem done and dusted and I'll finally be able to play this machine that I've had for over 4 months now! thanks again folks.

That sounds right to me. Let us know how it plays!

Well now that problem is sorted another one comes up.. haha classic pinball. When the left flipper button is hit its lighting the flasher about the flipper and the switches for drop targets 1-3-5 are inoperative and when they do work they are registering as the spinner! It's a labour of love this pinball game!

#15 9 years ago

I suggest opening another thread with the new problem. That will get you the most attention solving your new problem. Once you've started the new thread, I'll pitch in with some ideas.

#16 9 years ago

Not sure which flasher you are referring to. There is a flasher on the apron on the left side that goes off with the "S" and camera in the backbox. This is solenoid controlled and completely separate from the switches. The two are unrelated and do not interact with each other unless you have a wiring problem.

If you are referring to a light in the playfield need to know which light it is as youmay have a bad strobe or the light socket itself is a problem.

It was the light in the camera box but it seems to have stopped now! The only issue I've got left with the machine is the drop targets, the switches aren't registering and when they do they register as the super spinner...

I had the afore mentioned issue with targets 1,3 and 5 not working so I pulled the drop target mech off and those 5 connected wires down the bottom weren't soldered on properly and the middle one was missing so I resoldered and re attached a new wire to the middle but now this registering as super spinner issue..

Old thread, but for the record, there is no wire between drop three and four. This will funk up your spinner. And probably made some of the targets register twice. Switch matrix.

Chances are you don’t have this game or these problems anymore but for future generations, I reversed the flipper coil power wires which immediately blew the fuse. Checked my references, corrected the mistake but kept blowing fuses. The diode on the coil was fried (I think that’s the technical term). Replaced that. Flippers fine.
