Gottlieb system 1 varitarget issue

On my Gottlieb Buck Rogers the vari-target resets properly most of the time, but sometimes during a game or at game start up it fails to reset the varitarget and I get a message "check lamp P17 stuck switch". I have a Pascal board in the game.

What kind of switch is it sensing is stuck? A mechanical switch like a contact switch or is it a digital signal switch on a board? Or would the playfield transistor be sensed as a switch in this case. How many switches would it check?

I have cleaned, adjusted and checked all the mechanical switches on the varitarget, the solenoid works good, and I have checked the control board edge connectors but something else is erratic.
I assume the varitarget rivet contacts are not considered switches in this case, or are the numbered bulbs?

I'm an EM guy and sometimes have trouble understanding SS problems.

I'd guess it's sensing via the vari-target rivets that it didn't reset when the reset coil was activated (probably controlled via a lamp transistor). Could be physical issue or connector like you said
