My close encounters gottlieb is using portions of the high score as credits. I.e. 77601 high score comes up as either 77 credits or 60. I went through the tests and zeroed out the bookeeping. But as soon as i play it the first high score controlls the credits. It doesnt use them either. It just stays at 77 or60.
Bad mpu? Ive heard of grounding issues confusing the board.

System 1's are notorious for bad grounding and even worse connectors. I have a Sinbad awaiting me now to do the ground mods and change out the connectors. I would lean toward's the connectors but definitely you need to do the ground mod for sure. Try reseating the connectors just to see if that helps the symptons but chances are, there going to have to be changed out. They can cause all kinds of odd behavior

Did the grounding mods. For some reason even though i zero out the bookeeping, when i start the game up again it still retains the high score. Do i have to let the test mode finish for zero out to take effect? My next thing is the connectors i guess.

BurialCurse...interesting handle...,

Connectors won't be the root cause of the problem with the memory.
I assume you have an original System 1 MPU in the game vs a Ni or PI-1, right?
The problem can't be caused by anything offboard.
If you could post a video of the issue, we might be able to offer more ideas of what to investigate.

I believe you must advance to the next item with the test (inside door) button for the cpu clear button to 'stick'.

I'm having a similar issue to this, except my close encounters won't display any high score to date.
The machine always starts with 000 000
As I go through the tests, when I get to the high scores, all the displays are blank.
Also, as I go through each test 0,1,2,3... The test digit just stays at 0, but the player 1 display changes as it should.
I could use some direction on how to fix this.
Thanks,
