Just wanted to start a thread to document my various System 1 restorations. Since i seem to have a System 1 problem of late.

Current projects stacked up at the time of starting this thread.

1) Full/complete Joker Poker restoration
2) Count-Down
3) Sinbad playfield swap

#2 8 years ago

Count-Down

Project pin i just picked up last week. Had been looking for one and couldn't pass it up. Had no boards and didn't fire up. Once i got it home, i repinned every single CPU/MPU connector and a couple of the driver board connectors. That resolved the displays not working at all and took care of most everything else. I should have taken pictures of the pins i pulled out, they were green and half of them were broken, worst i had seen.

The outhole coil was burnt to a crisp, and so was the knocker. So I ordered new coils from PBR and got those this week, I just replaced those last night and that was the last of the functions to get the game working. I stripped down the playfield, cleaned it up really good, and then carnauba waxed it and put all new rubbers on it. Plays great now.

Just got done putting in full LED's for the inserts a few hours ago, looks nice, but maybe a little bright.

Nice burnt coil...

Here is the playfield lit up with LED's, only inserts, no GI

Here are a few pictures of the Joker Poker. This will look nothing the same, once i'm done. I've got a new stencil kit for it and a CPR playfield and BG for it.

Here is when i got my sinbad playfield, i'll grab some better overall pics, but it's in fantastic shape and doesn't have the planking that my current one does.

This is right when i got it and it's nasty dirty.
IMG_4962.jpgIMG_4962.jpg

Here is partially polished, looking good so far... haven't finished polishing it yet.

Is that a NOS or just really well touched-up playfield? Which game is that, I don't recognize that one...

#7 8 years ago

Good stuff! I love seeing these era of games come back to life!

The Joker Poker is going to be something special once i finish it, should look and play brand new.

Oh i also forgot, i primarily run Pascal boards in everything. I've ran both the older Ni-Wumpf and the Mark II, but Pascal's boards take the cake by far, better programming, better diagnostics and better gameplay. I have another all-in-one and a stand-alone CPU on the way, whenever they finally show up.

Ah, could be... sometimes when you see them apart, you forget which machine it is. Well at least i do... I haven't seen or played a Genie either..

i am officially a new club member as this is my first restore attempt. System 1 games are the most enjoyable games to me so when my 15 year old son says dad we should try a project we set out to find a buck rogers. What a great way to get another game in the house (how can mom say no to that). 6 months later one pops up on CL about 2 hour drive away . I'm the 2nd caller and tell the guy i will take it and be there the next day with cash so we got a deal. The next morning guys call and says he had about 50 calls and emails with people offering more oh shit . Well I'm stuck paying !00 bucks more as i already told my son we had it bought and did not won't to disappoint him . It had been in a shed for the last 7 years as the guy bought it from a pizza joint and he had never played it. Buck was no prize as 2 displays are out are out ,all boards not working . back glass was decent but lost some paint on the move so will need touched up. I now i will have more it than it's worth but its not always about a buck . Just hoping it turns out nice .

I'm an addict too.

My JP is waiting for a CPR playfield swap and I'm currently working on Sinbad.

Does anyone happen to have a playfield scan of Count-Down? My girlfriend needs some cosmetic surgery/waterslide decals.

Too funny, i have CPR playfield for JP sitting here, and i'm working on another playfield for Sinbad right now as well..

I could probably get you a scan of my Count-Down, it's not perfect, but it's better than yours!

If you don't mind sending me a proper scan, that would be awesome!

I'm sure I can return the favour somehow.

I can try to see what i can get, might take me a few days to find the time. Not entirely sure how to scan it without stripping the PF (which i don't feel like doing)

I could for sure at least take some super nice pictures that you could work with, but i'll go for a scan as well.

#28 8 years ago

Never done the shipping thing but any chance you driving to the Texas Pinball Festival in March . Could you take a look at the upper left hand ball guide on buck .mine is straight but seems like it should have a curve to it .

image_(resized).jpegimage_(resized).jpeg

#29 8 years ago

Nail on the outside? that seems wrong...

#30 8 years ago

Yea it just doesnt look right

#31 8 years ago

No doubt, ball hits that nail? No way, remove and either bend that one, or find the correct replacement.

#32 8 years ago

The wood looks a bit torn up as well, which happens when some of those guides are pulled out, if they have the notch thingy on them. Made that mistake a few times.

#33 8 years ago

Yea we learned the hard way . We had our first attempt with backglass touchup . Color matching looks good with the lights off but tough to get the translucency part maybe had to thick of paint but better than it was .we left the skin tone alone just not sure what paint to try yet

Just about ready to bring buck out to the line up .Big thanks to Mike at Pinball Past as we needed some helpwith the pops and vari target to get up and going. Got it set up at 6 degrees and 20095 flipper coils man this thing plays faster than tron might have to tone it down some. Was a great learning project for my son and i and really happy how it turned out .

wow that playfield is in great shape... i know someone who would pay for that!

thanks for the thread resurrection, forgot i had this thread! I'm almost done repainting Joker Poker. Playfield is done. I also finished restoring my Sinbad last year, so that looks like new.

#39 6 years ago

Yes, I am addicted too. I only have a Buck Rogers, but it was fun in a way and rather simple to resurrect, despite the awful condition I got the machine in:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/ycv-gottlieb-buck-rogers-restoration-or-the-infamous-system-1

I would love a Joker Poker but the opportunity has not shown up yet.

Pascal boards are the only ones I run and recommend, the Ni-Wumpf don’t even come close.
