Greetings! I have worked thru the excellent Gottlieb System 1 repair guide (http://www.pinrepair.com/sys1/#cpu) but am still experiencing intermittent start up issues (displays come on IMMEDIATELY with all zeros) on my Close Encounters. Before I invest in a Pascal board, I thought I would ask the community if anyone has found any other "fixes" above and beyond what is captured in the repair guide referenced above.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

System 1 MPU boards aren't really worth messing with if they don't work.
Switch to a PI-1 or a NiWumpf. Both are excellent long term alternatives.

Check slam tilt switch on the coin door and under the PF. Some were normally open, some are suppose to be normally closed.

Check and make sure yours are set correctly, if not you get no start up and will be a tilt mode

Chris is 100% correct on this one. I spent 6 weeks on my Genie before I became a believer. Plus the Pascal adds features not available to the original sys1 boards.

Checked this earlier today and all switches are in the correct config. Thanks!!

I'd just jumper the slam switch closed on the MPU, rule out dirty contacts

Game booting straight to zeros might be because of open/bad contact on slam switch circuit. Try shorting the C2 capacitor on CPU board.

If your board still does not boot even if the +5/-12 voltages are OK, I agree with Chris - get a new board! I recommend Pascal Janin's PI-1 (CPU) or PI1-X4 (power supply/CPU/sound all in one) boards.
