Every time a 10pt switch is activated, the 15A fuse blows. What I have observed when this happens, the N relay energizes but stays locked in, the 10pt score reel coil energizes but no enough to hit the EOS switch. If I manually activate the N relay, everything works fine. The 10pt score reel resets perfectly at the start of a game. I had adjusted the switches on the N relay and it worked great, the machine has since been picked up by the owner, now blows fuse every time again.

Possible that switches need adjusting again since the move?

Should the N relay lock in when a switch is activated? I wouldn't think it would. If I am correct, what is an instance where it would lock in?

The N relay should lock in when any 10 point switch on playfield closes, energizing 10 pt score reel and releasing when reel EOS opens.

Does the game have chimes installed? Could be that 10 point chime coil is shorted. That would explain why the score reel works during reset but not during scoring.

Also match unit may operate via the N relay - check match unit coil too.

Yes chimes are installed, will check that and the match unit as well. I should be visiting the game soon.

Will report back.

Thank you for the reply.

This is 100% broken behavior. You need the EOS switch on the score unit to open every single time it steps, or you'll just keep frying coils and blowing fuses.

The three main reasons this happens on a score unit stepper is:

- The EOS switch blades are either out of adjustment, or the top of the long blade has broken off.
- The coil stop has come loose inside the coil sleeve and is blocking the full travel of the plunger.
- The plastic coil sleeve has deformed from overheating and is blocking the full travel of the plunger.

There could be some other mechanical issue with the 10 point score unit that would cause this problem, but the above are the most common.

The score reel coil/EOS switch works perfectly during the reset cycle and when I manually activate the N relay. When a 10pt switch is activated you can see that the coil isn't even close to making the end of stroke switch it is like the coil is binding or not enough power for the coil to make full stroke.

There isn’t enough power for the coil due to a short somewhere else robbing the necessary volts. Think of everything that occurs when you trigger a ten point switch on the playfield. Chimes and match function like mentioned above. Does it also have an alternator relay? Disconnect the power to those (put paper in the switches that power them) and see if the problem goes away.

Yes.

There is no alternator relay on that one, there is something similar. Now that I think about it, that was the last thing I touched before the fuse started blowing. I will have a look at that.

It wasn't blowing the fuse before that.
