I could use a little help with a Gottlieb Spiderman I recently found. The game has sat untouched since the early 80's in a heated basement and is in super nice shape. The game has no hacks, is super original, and looks like it has never needed or had any service. Of course the power supply board was dead so we put in a brand new Gulf Pinball board. It has a nice ground lug point so it was easy to do the ground mods and run wires to the cabinet floor, the CPU, and the power driver board. I also repined all the connectors on the power supply board and the harness going to the CPU. The game now boots up and plays but after about 30 seconds the CPU seems to lock up. The displays all go blank except for a single digit "0" in the player one position after starting a one player game. The game still plays but there is no scoring or sound. The CPU appears excellent. It's hard to believe the battery has not leaked and shows 3.9V while being rated at 3.6V. There is no corrosion on the CPU at all. The board appears new. I'm guessing it's a CPU problem but I don't have another System 80 game to swap it into for testing. I just thought I'd post this before buying a new CPU. Thanks in advance for any help.

i just ordered one of these kool system 80 ( & 80A / 80B ) tester boards.

This might help you pinpoint issue(s) in your Amazing Spidey !~

Have you measured the +5 volts at the cpu board?

No, if I'm not mistaken there are no test points labeled on this board. Since it boots to start I was guessing it's getting 5V to start and then something on the board is causing a voltage drop.

That electrolytic capacitor (100 uf @ 10 volts) next to the power connector on the cpu board is where to measure the + 5 volts.

Meter + to the + side of the capacitor and meter - to the - side of the capacitor.

Thank you sir, I will check that. Are these caps common failure points? Or, just usually an indicator of another problem?

Yup, rock solid 5V to the CPU.

Mike,

Why buy a new MPU? Your current MPU can be repaired quite easily, and despite the negative press, they can be made to be rock solid.
If the original "varta" battery is on the board, it's very possible that there is corrosion beneath it where the lugs solder on.
If it's still on there, get it off.

If you want the board repaired, see the contact line below. I can take care of it.

BTW, it's not a reset problem. That symptom is consistent with e board locking up. The processor has gone off into the weeds.

Thanks Chris. I will remove the battery. Is the processor a soldered on chip? Would you have a board location number and part number? Sorry, but I don't have the board or manual here. Many thanks.

What I meant by off into the weeds is that the 6502 CPU isn't fetching and executing instructions as it's supposed to. This may be caused by several reasons.

It's best to send your pristine board to someone who can repair it correctly.

I can do a board swap for you if you'd like.

Thank you very much Chris. I do have a local friend who is an excellent board tech. We are going to give it a shot first. I was hoping there was an easy answer here for me first. If we don't make any progress I will certainly take you up on your offer. Thanks again.

Hi PinballMike and others!
I have the exact same problem with my Sys80 Spiderman. Sometimes I can play an hour sometimes just a minute. Than the displays and sound goes down, but the game is still playable.
Did you solve your problem?
Or any suggestions?
