John in NC - did you just hose that playfield down, or is it actually bubbled up like that? That's some impressive wear from the kickout holes too! I hadn't seen that long pattern before - usually just one nice deep divot. But strangely enough, the paint around the bonus inserts looks pretty good!

I sprayed some mean green on it just before snapping the picture. This playfield is actually very fixable. I'll set it aside and possibly touch it up one day.

Thanks for the update!
I can't wait to get that playfield in my game, it's such a nice player.

I'm sure by brother Wade would be up for it, especially if we gave him the questions in advance, and then I went thru them during the call.
So...
Gimme yer questions! Whatchu want to know? What would you ask him if'n you were me? Go!

Cabinet repair mode while I wait for my Cowpoke clear to cure. Note the minor differences between the cabinets, Quick Draw cab missing blue rock shadow detail on front of side art and is less detailed. Never had 3 machines in work at the same time. I’m guessing I’ll be plowing through these all winter.

Oh Look... another color! Getting closer Daddios!
Also, Uncle Pinball has a new episode: #37 - Mailbag!! The Apple link should be live by the time most of you see this.

I’m getting ready! Cabinets repaired and ready for filler and paint. Curious that quick draw was 100% plywood and fast draw had mdf panels (replaced as they were sawdust clumps). Also there were differences on the cabinet art. The fast draw has much more detail. I Think I’ll go for chrome on Doors coin bezels, shooters and polish the rails to a better than original chrome look.

From the pics you've posted, I cannot tell any difference. Maybe post a side-by-side comparison for those of us that aren't that observant? It's interesting - I wonder if that's by design or maybe there was 2 different cabinet makers involved and somehow one of them unintentionally lost some of the detailing in their stencils.

Mane on lead horse detail, rock shadow missing on quick draw. Art under leg area extended on one. Wagon dust (red) many subtle differences. I copied the more detailed cabinet for my stencils.

Thanks. Yeah, easy to see differences when they are side by side like that. I notice the orange horse even has a "clubfoot" on Fast Draw. I think they both look nice though - I wouldn't paint over either one if they were mine.

There’s extensive repair to other sections of the cabinets necessitating paint to match. I’m also putting in new playfields so no half measures.

I can see it from your viewpoint, but I still prefer the 45-year old patina so long as there isn't major damage (and I'm also putting a new playfield in mine).

The fast draw was stored in a wet seaside shed with rotted mdf. Bondo is your friend with basket cases like this.

Yeah, there isn't much of a choice but to completely renovate that one. I hope you find a blue paint that matches the original color fairly well . I know it really doesn't matter that much since you are doing the entire cabinet, but if you've seen a lot of these, they just don't look quite right if the color is off a little bit.

The cabinet may be rough, but the playfield in that looks pretty darn good.

Funny - my first thought on that last picture was "DANGER - that woman needs to put her hair up while she is operating that router." It's been about 45 years since I was in high school wood shop, but I remember our teacher yelling at the girls every day to tie their hair up - all 2 of them. And there were also some boys that had to do it as well - ahh, those swingin' 70's. Those big bells were in style back then, too!

#174 3 years ago

It's unfortunate that one of the people on the FD wait list has recently passed away.

#175 3 years ago

Wade is still cutting playfields as of yesterday and has sent a completed sample to Steve Young for approval. Those with deposits should be seeing an email shortly.

Look closer, the one on the left is my original from Quick Draw. It's very salvageable though. The one from Fast Draw is still populated. Left it intact for comparison so I didn't have to take pictures for reassembly. I'll Populate one, then tear into that one.

#179 3 years ago

I guess the stars in my eyes blinded me. I see now.

John, thank you my friend, from all of us.

#180 3 years ago

Wow! Your original PF is testament to Wade's abilities.

Steve Young approved indeed

Quoted from John_in_NC:

It looks like somewhere along the line, the yellow "SPECIAL" area was touched up & modified on your original (most likely because the yellow color is easier to match than the light blue). Wouldn't even be noticeable, except when placed side by side with the new playfields. Congrats! Mine won't be here until Saturday. Knowing me, I won't start the swap until Sunday (that would be some random Sunday in the year 2022!)

Correct it was repainted at kick out areas at some point and Mylar applied. I peeled off the Mylar thinking I might fix it starting on some Sunday in 2022 as well

#183 3 years ago

Received my playfield yesterday and it was worth the wait. Will start the swap after Christmas.

#186 3 years ago

I’m not sure what’s next but here’s his list he text me “Strange World, El Dorado, Jacks Open, Surf Champ, Sing Along, Crosstown. I have a custom project right now for Team One/Abra”

#187 3 years ago

I have a Team One so what kind of project are you doing if you don't mind my asking?

Did you use Montana White "Chilli" & Montana White "Light Blue" on your cabinet refurbish?

It will allow you to convert a Team One into the add-a-ball version of Abracadabra, called Wizard. Here is the thread that provides details of what will be included.

Dover White is a good match to the original background. The blue hues are always the most difficult to match. I finally came up with a recipe of touch-up colors (through trial and error) that matches the original blue color fairly close, but it still isn't as close to the original as I would like it to be. I wish the pinball manufacturers would have documented their paint color codes in their drawings.

I still have seven pins - one dmd, four 80s machines and two EMs - but I’ve owned about 70 pins over the last 35 years. Many classic single player Gottliebs, some of the great Williams, Bally & Stern dmd games like TZ, STTNG, Shadow and LOTR. They're all gone now but I’ve hung on to my Fast Draw for 30+ years because I simply NEVER get tired of playing it, my #1 favorite. There is an unexplainable and magical genius in this game despite its simplicity. The only pf wear is the usual, at the kicker holes. I put in a new backglass, new drop and bullseye targets, flattened a few overly-cupped inserts and added a pair of struts underneath to straighten out a slight warp it’s developed over the last three decades.

Still... you ever get a brand new playfield but you don’t really want to put it in? -sniffle-

I’m having mine auto cleared. Going to be insanely fast. New backglass from Shay, new plastics, new cabinet repaint and thinking I’ll go chrome finish across the board. Quick draw and fast draw, my brothers 60th is coming up, thinking I may surprise him with one. But which do I keep? Hmmm

If I had YOUR Fastdraw I would definitely not replace the playfield. Original is Original ! Mine was really bad , with bare wood in places and all sort of problems. took me a great deal of trouble to restore it to new condition https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/surf-champ-slow-playfield-restoration
I would go with the new playfield if it was available at the time though.

Just finished my Fast Draw and it went fairly well. I did get rid of the flaky bank of 10 lights and put in individual ones . The pin is now complete with a cabinet restoration, new back glass and now a beautiful playfield thanks to Wade!

How come you have so much light coming out of your outhole? (and shouldn't you be seeking immediate medical attention for it? )

Good one! The light comes from the flipper buttons.

I like it! You might want to put some red bulbs under the Special inserts - they look a little on the orange side unless that is just how it appears to the camera.

Yeah but it still has cupped inserts that affect the ball. I flattened the large ones but they never come out perfectly flat and smooth and I'm tired of those wear spots at the kicker holes also, been glaring at them since I got the machine. And the surface is dull and has the usual thinning/wearing off of the black rings around all of the inserts where they meet the wood, I've played this machine more than any other by far. If the new playfield wasn't so absolutely gorgeous I probably wouldn't put it in, but it is. However I'm pretty damn lazy anymore so I may not be doing it for a month or two. It's gotta be when I'm experiencing an atypically energetic week. I'll keep the old playfield too.
