Just started this thread to document with pictures and info about my restoration of my first pin! My wife and I are very excited to get this pin and get it looking the best we can.

This was a very solid Genesis to begin with. I want to say 90% working...maybe 95%. Had a few bulbs blown that we changed(going to replace every bulb with a new one when my order arrives.)

There were a few flashers that still wouldn't work. All the ones in the back box would not work. Ended up being the resistor had a wire loose. Resoldered the wire and they work flawlessly. The flashers under the right ramp wouldn't work and that also was a wire loose on that resistor.

At first the reveal would not work. Lights would come on but not the motor for the reveal. Then all of a sudden it did work... I believe that the solenoid was bound up somehow. Might have bumped it when pulling up the playfield. Who knows lol. Works everytime now. Going to pick up some sewing machine oil to lube it up.

I also noticed that only one pop bumper was scoring but they were all working. Looked at the bottom of the playfield and noticed that someone had broken off 3 of the 4 scoring leaf switches.

Of course like everyone elses Genesis my ramps are broken. Ordered new ones from Freeplay40 and my new clear ramps should be here anytime. Thanks again!

Ordered rubber kit, new pinballs, light bulbs, and the 3 pop bumper switches. Everything should be in within the next day or two.

I'm going to post before and after pictures through the process. The playfiled and cabinet is dirty. We are going to remove as much as we can from the playfield. Then clean and wax. Clean all plastics and posts.

Almost forgot. The playfield plexi has a small crack beside one of the screws. If you zoom in on the last pic you can see it. Going to try to glue it for now... I contacted Pam at Pinbits to see if she can make me a replacement as they are out of stock at the moment.

Sorry. I'll fix them when I am off work. I couldn't figure out how to rotate them on my phone.

Received my order from The Pinball Wizard today! Rubber ring kit, a pack of light bulbs, and of course new pinballs. Get to start working on this today. Removing everything off the playfield then clean and wax.

My clear ramps from Freeplay40 have been delayed by USPS for some reason. Should have been here yesterday, but still no update as to when they are to be delivered. We are really excited to see these and get them installed.

I'll be uploading some pics after we get everything off the playfield before cleaning & waxing and then after pics. Hopefully with the new ramps installed lol. I'm sure Freeplay40 still loves seeing his ramps in everyones pins.

Yeah... It's all good though. Cliffy is making me some ramp protectors and entrance ramps for my new Freeplay40 clear ramps, and I will be waiting to get those before installing the ramps. So they get here when they do.

Update: Tore down playfield last night. We cleaned and waxed everything and got it all back together. If I were to give any advice on this section it would be pictures pictures pictures. There were a few places we had to really figure out which post went where with what fastener. Changed out all bulbs before repopulating. Found out we were missing 3 posts.

Have blue pop bumper skirts, bodies, and caps coming. Noticed the switch for the reveal motor had the end broken off. A new one ordered. Just some odds and ends stuff coming in the mail and this pin is going to look awesome.

We could have done a better job of cleaning and actually buffed it. We wanted to get it done in one night this time, and we were a bit nervous as this is our first pin. I plan on stripping down the playfield again at a later time to give it a really good cleaning, waxing, and buffing. For now we are very pleased with the results.

#13 3 years ago

Thanks ThatsaKicker We bought it from a guy that got it in a package deal. Said he had to purchase 6 pins to get the 4 he wanted so this one sat for a while in his storage area. It was dirty when he got it.

Got the last piece I needed to complete this pin. Just ordered the new playfield window. Shout out to Ven for this! Thanks again!

#15 3 years ago

Got my new ramps from Freeplay40 today! They look great! Thanks again. I have to wait to install them until I receive the ramp protectors from @cliffy.

20200803_111217 (resized).jpg20200803_111217 (resized).jpg

Also got my new pop bumper switches installed. Seems to me that a shady operator owned this pin. Three of the four pop bumper switch assemblies had the scoring part of the switch broke off so that the pin didn't score as much. Plus there was a few mini posts removed (I have them on order) that made it so the pinball got stuck in a couple places. You had to tilt the machine in order to get the pinball unstuck... which was set so it was very easy to tilt.

Got more done today! Pulled out the Control Board (A3) and replaced a transistor to fix the light for drop target 3 so now all lights are working.

Got the new blue pop bumpers installed. As you can see from previous photos that they were not from a Genesis. Have no idea if they were even Gottlieb or not. Now it has brand new ones that are the style from the Genesis but in blue. Really love how they look! Also replaced the t-molding around the back box. Looks so much better than the old cracked stuff.

Here is, what i did with mine. I liked the idea to transform the pin back to the roots

New Translite, Topper, Cabinet-Decals, Target-stickers = Metropolis.

Looks pretty cool! I want to make a custom topper too but we actually like the translight like it is. Lol I told my wife it looks like the start of a funny joke really. A mad scientist, a hooker, and a dwarf walk into a bar....

Sorry. I work nights and just woke up lol. I'm working on it and I'll post the pics in a few when I get back to my computer desk. For some reason my phone won't let me rotate pictures but I can do it fine on my pc. For some reason pinside rotates all my images and when I edit the photo on my phone amd rotate it...then pinside doesn't rotate it. It's odd lol

#22 3 years ago

Yeah they really need to fix that. It’s been an issue for a while.

I've blown up the section where it refers to the drop target lights. Notice that for drop target 2 is lamp L10.

Then refer to the control board schematic.

This is the layout of the board. I rotated the image so that it should be the same orientation as the board in the back box. I marked the two locations on the pic.

Thank you! We are really enjoying it. This is our first pin too. I'm going to keep it also. I know that a lot of people get pins and then trade them out or sell to get something else. I'm more of a hold onto it kind of guy lol. Unless I get a pin that I really don't like then it will stay. We really love this pin.. especially the translight. I know a lot of people don't like it, but we tend to like the more oddball stuff.

When we finally get the pin done I am going to post a detailed cost breakdown of everything we fixed and replaced.

Not expensive, but fits perfect.

Do you have any idea of the part number on the pop cap components? I can find the inner caps (looks like #C10434 to me) but not the outer rings. I'm looking for a set of these, but in white. Help!

Thanks! That's really appreciated. I got all the pop bumper stuff from Marco Specialties.

Looks like 10433, 10434, and 10435. I'm at work otherwise I could look in my manual. All the part numbers are in there. That's how I originally found them. Good luck!

The bodies for the white are these.

Found the base also... I didn't need these. You don't see them so I didn't replace mine. part number 10432

That makes sense, the collars are molded into the base which means in order to run those in a non Gottlieb machine I would need to buy the entire setup. Thanks for the links!

Got word from Cliffy that my ramp entrance and protector kit is on the way! Ready to get these new ramps installed! Think I'm going to tear down the playfield again and clean it better. There are some spots we noticed after. Putting it back together that needed cleaned more. Plus have new pop bumper lamp sockets to install and have to take the upper plastics on the right side off. Need to install a post up there that's missing. Plus I have another one that needs replaced. Anyone know the easiest and safest way to get a broken post out of the playfield. Have another one missing but it's broken off just below the playfield.

#40 3 years ago

Got these in a couple of days ago.

20200824_110754 (resized).jpg20200824_110754 (resized).jpg

We finally found the time to do another round of tearing down the play field, cleaning, and waxing before installing the new ramps from Freeplay40 and the Genesis ramp kit from Cliffy . I ordered a set of the rubber posts in white as well as teal. We went with the teal ultimately. Matched the play field pretty good.

Here is everything installed with the white posts.

20200827_004548 (resized).jpg20200827_004548 (resized).jpg

and the teal posts.

20200827_010139 (resized).jpg20200827_010139 (resized).jpg

Thanks again Freeplay40 and Cliffy !

I'll post a complete cost list when I get the chance. Without getting all the numbers around I believe the total is just under $1,800. I still need to get the under the play field glass lab reproduction part.

Yes it will. Thank you very much Scott! I'm happy you are making these and even better than original ones. Could be here by tomorrow. We are trying to make it look its best. I'm still thinking about LEDs. I won't do color ones. Most likely cool white ones with frosted lenses from Comet. Color match the inserts. Also thinking about homemade "pinstadium" lights.

Ordered LEDs, a flipper/start button lighting kit, and a trough light kit from Comet Pinball earlier this week. Got my shipment today! Unfortunately we work all weekend this weekend so I won't be able to get installing until Monday. Got the sample pack from them last week and we tried a few different bulbs here and there. We went with Cool White frosted lens 2smd for GI and white inserts and color matched all the other inserts. There was a couple of deviations we decided to go with. The large red inserts for the Special 4smd Red no lens amd for the clear insert for the lifeforce we went with a retro cool white led with a frosted lens. We put a 1smd non ghosting frosted lens in it and it was pretty blinding. The retro bulb was perfect. On the button kit we went with the blue. We figured that would look awesome with having the blue pop bumpers. Cool white on the trough light as well. I'll post pics when we get everything installed.

Edit: Forgot to mention we didn't go with any LED flashers. We like the look of the incandescent flashers in the lab area.

Good choice. They are expensive and never look good.

Also I’ve found that frosted lenses everywhere always look the best.

And non ghosting bulbs are necessary in gottliebs. I’ve never seen a ghosting issue in the 4 gottliebs I’ve owned from the 80s.

And non ghosting bulbs are necessary in gottliebs. I’ve never seen a ghosting issue in the 4 gottliebs I’ve owned from the 80s.

I'm sure you meant not necessary lol. Ya there are no issues as far as I can tell. I found time to do most of it already... Couldn't help myself lol. Have to finish up the button kit and it will be complete. I also found that a party noise maker from the dollar store works great to remove bulbs you can't get to that's in a hole. Cut a slit and it fots perfectly.

Got everything installed! Looks amazing! I turned down the brightness on my camera when I took the pics so it doesn't look washed out. Of course pictures do do it justice. Glad we decided to add the lighted button kit.

Thinking about a mod idea I have. An under/back of back box lighting that lights up as you complete Arms Brain Body and Legs. I would hook it up to the lights under the lab with corresponding bulb colors. That way it would flash when in attract mode. Of course I would add a switch to turn them off if I wanted to. Any thoughts? Has anyone thought about this? I might think about making a kit if anyone was intered.
