Flipper Parade add balls 3 (resized).jpg
#1 1 year ago

After many months of working on and off my Flipper parade l fired it up yesterday. A series of small problems were present but the main problem is motor running on for a short period, then the 'parade cannon' fires 4/5 times adding balls and points, (both 10's and 1's). All functions on the game work, flippers, ball release, pop bumpers, slingshots, roto target, roll-over switches, etc. What l have noticed is that 10 points adds a ball and when l pick up the ball from the shooter lane and place by the outhole to drain (without it interacting with anything on the playfield), it will deduct a ball but sometime re-add it!. Any pointers would help, thanks in advance.

If you're saying that playfield switches are firing at startup, then a switch or switches are stuck on.

After looking at the problem(s), l decided to to try and trace the 'adding balls' problem first. l removed the 'add a ball adjustment score plugs' and started the game. The game now follows the start up procedure except it add some hundreds points as the ball is released. Playing the game with my finger the 1 to 5 roll overs score 10 pnts and lite lights in front of roto target, pop bumpers score 1 pnt unlit and 10 pnt lit, the 4 side roll overs score 100 pnts, the two 1 pnt switches score 1 pnt, the two 5 pnt switches score 5 pnts and spin roto target, the sling shots score 1 pnt and 10 pnt when lit, side out lanes score 50 pnt, roto target scores 50 pnts and adds ball if lit number and target number are the same and the out hole 5 pnts and spins roto target. So far so good. Unplugging the add a ball score adjustment plugs seems to have contained the 'adding balls' problem but the adding 100's of points straight after releasing the ball for play needs thinking about. Any thoughts or pointers gratefully accepted. Thanks in advance.

I don't really follow what the problem is, but if unplugging the adjustment plugs fixes it you might have a switch on the Q relay (in the red box) stuck closed:

Mark, you are correct, the 'Q' relay (100pnt) did have a switch that was too close which l have adjusted slightly so the adding a few hundred points at the ball release no long occurs, but... Playing the game l have noticed that watching the hundreds score, before the score reels gets to 999 it will add a thousand. Example would be either the ball in play leave the field of play with 296 score, goes down the out hole, (adds 5), to 301 but a thousand is added aswell. This could happen without the ball leaving play. l have looked at the '9th' position switch in the hundreds reel and that only makes contact at the 9th position.
Any thoughts?,
Thanks for your input.

In the schematic above there are just two paths into the 1000 point Score Reel (or "Add Thousands Unit"). One path used during the game is through the 100 point score reel 9th position switch. The other path used only during reset is through the Runout and S relay switches. It seems less likely but the two switches in the 2nd path could be closed or gapped too close. If you get 1000 points without the Q/100 point relay firing (as in your example) that would point to the 2nd path.

I've looked at the 'S' relays, (they are a pair with a link bar), and gaps were close on a few switches but nothing would complete a circuit but l have re-gapped them. Starting the game but playing it with my finger closing different switches sometime causes the problem but slapping the playfield will cause the thousand point score reel to add one. l'm going to take a close look at the hundreds relay (q) and units/tens/hundred/thousands score reels - a strip and search to see if there's odd. Thanks again.

l found nothing that you would think that would would cause the problem of adding a thousand before reaching 999. What l did notice is that if l started the game so it resets to zero all score reels, adds five balls and released the 1st ball to play, (as it should do). l then 'play' the game with my finger on the tens relay, (m), l can tap the armature ten times slowly and when it gets to faullt. ie; on the tenth tap it will both pulse the hundreds and thousands score reels, correct for the hundreds but wrong for the thousands, it would also pulse the hundreds (q) relay. Any thoughs?, a short in the tens relay switch stacks?.

Firing the Q/100 point relay and advancing the 100 point score reel when stepping from 90 to 00 is correct. The 1000 point score reel is likely advancing because the 9th position switch on the 100 point score reel is closed or shorted. Look at the schematic in reply #4. The switch on the Q relay (on the right, not in the red box) is closing because it should. The 9th position switch in the same circuit if closed allows the 1000 point score reel to advance at the same time.

l decided to try something out, l taped over the 100pnt 9th position switch and the started the game. Playing the game the fault re-occured so then taped over the 10's pnt - 9th position switch aswell and started the game again playing with my finger - no fault. l then removed the 100pnt relay and carefully removed the switch stacks to see if l could find any problems, (shorts), nothing l did the same to the 10's relay and found nothing. Putting the relays back and starting the game, (without tape), the 'adding a thousand before 999' problem seem to have gone. l played a dozen games and it seems ok, so l plugged the 'add a ball' score plugs back in at 1000/3000 sockets and started the game, the original problem of adding balls when various switches were made re-ocurred. Looking at the score adjustment socket and plugs l noticed the a bare wire from the lighting circuit was not flat against the wood but resting against the adjustment socket, see picture, this bare wire has now been stapled down. The game is now works!...

MarkG,
Thanks for your help, pointers were right.
