    What are these used for?

While working on a neptune, I see there are a few grey electrolytic capacitors inside that I do not see in other wedge heads. Is there a good way to test these without removeing from the circuit. Assume these go bad, what kind of issues do you guys experiance?

    Hi Fordiesel69
capacitors --- or diodes for DC- flippers / bumpers / slingshot kickers (?). See:

Sometimes they were used for delay or even random awards, like the Top Score/300 "mystery bonus" kickout.

On Williams' Grand Prix there is a cap for a delay relay when you hit the spinner, so that if you land in the top bonus hole, it doesn't activate until the spinner stops. pretty neat.

Don't people sometimes use a cap to reduce arcing for certain switches?

Yes, flipper button switches and flipper EOS switches.

In Gottlieb EM machines, the capacitors are used to provide a time delay while certain other functions are taking place. They can be tested in-circuit with capacitor testers provided you have the machine unplugged from the wall outlet. If the capacitor is an electrolytic type, you should test it for both correct value (uF) as well as ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance).

I wonder... is this ever done on EM flipper EOS switches, or just DC/newer games?
