A previous owner used a wire wheel to polish this door. Could I sand this out progressively starting with a fine paper on up to say a 2000 grit?

would think so. I use 600 grit to start, a little water. vertical 1 direction strokes... 800 1000 1500 etc

I started with 320 grit and went up to 2000, then polished. Looks much better.
