I am curious about the ball count unit for this machine. It only steps 3 positions. I am use to single player machines which step 5 times. And I do not have a schematic as of yet.

Ball count is handled by the Player Unit. You might be referring to the coin unit, which controls the number of players in the game.

Yep, the coin unit...
Talked about here:

You want to play “300” in three ball mode to get the most fun out of it. Double & triple bonus not awarded in five ball mode.
You are going to love playing that machine. I had the two player version, Top Score, for a while. How’s the backglass on yours? Mine had a wear spot where the bonus balls come off the rack
Quoted from paulace:Man, that's a nice clean coin unit!
Just finished up with it. I also found the paper tag inside the cabinet.

Those 4-player EM backboxes just seem to get heavier too every time I have to move one!
Nice looking "300" by the way! One of the few EMs still on my wishlist.

Take a drive over and we can arrange a deal. (Better pack a lunch)

lol
Watch it - I might just take you up on that offer!
All score reels disassembled, cleaned, lubed, repaired switch contacts, and they all zero out perfectly now. So nice to watch all 4 player reels reset as they should. Player unit, coin unit, back box animation unit, coin door, chime unit, all disassembled, cleaned, polished, and lubed.
What I found was the design of the 10 ball animation unit allowed for the balls to rub against the back glass, causing damage. I cut a small piece of mylar and attached it to prevent further ink loss.
I may list this for sale.
