Hi guys,

Trying to revive a Gorgar I got sometime ago.
It is having the 1496 boot issue. not going past this.

Tried the power force boot, no change. No corrosion on the boards.
Sound board works fine through the test switch.

Recapped the Power supply, same issue.

here are the value I get on the test points:
TP1 9.58 VDC
TP2 3.97 VDC
TP3 3.88 VDC
TP4 4.8 VDC
TP5 4.84 VDC
TP6 2.36 VDC
TP7 4.84 VDC
TP8 4.91 VDC
TP9 5.03 VDC

Any idea?
Dead ram for sure?

I also spotted this below the playfield which does not look factory made...
Anyone knows what are the correct values for those resistances?

have you checked the header connector between cpu and driver board?

Bscokid: ok so the left one is 330 ohms, thx!

Bax1: yep, pulled it out to reflow everything but no luck.

#6 4 years ago

So when you say it give boot error 1496, you mean it is booting into audit mode, and will not go into game over mode? I know it is a dumb question, but have you tried cycling the power several times with the coin door open?

Otherwise you may be correct, bad ram will prevent the machine from booting into game over mode.

#7 4 years ago

Yep, not going to game over, and yep I tried the cycling, and the factory restore, same stuff.

Ok will order the ram and report afterwards

Hi guys,

So I got the part, and it was a dead CMOS ram indeed!
Gorgar is now booting

Have sound issues though; no heartbeat during play and no Gorgar speech. Sound effects are ok.
When I push the test button on the sound board => I hear Gorgar speaking just fine, but nothing in play.
I don't have any heartbeat as well during play, but in the menu (#35) it is clearly ON (01).

Anyone knows what I should check?

#10 4 years ago

So, I made some troubleshooting.
Checked all roms, all connections on the Sound Board, reflowed all pins => still the same.

Still all sounds and speech good with the sound board test button.

When I tried through the test mode, on tests 02, I got the following with nothing reacting at all:
Tests 6,7,8,13,14,15,16,22

I reckon there might be an issue with the driver board?

#11 4 years ago

Changed the caps on the sound board, no change.
Checked the bottom left connector on driver board, all contacts and continuity are good.
All associated transistors seem ok, same with resistors.

Stuck at this point. Don't know what else to look at, don't have another system 6 for swap testing.

Signal input circuitry locked up on sound board.

#14 4 years ago

Thanks.
How can I check it/solve it?

Momentarily ground pins where there is a wire connection (outlined in blue) a working sound board will produce sounds.
only one input that's shorted will cancel other inputs - no sounds

Thanks, just tried.
Though I did not get any voice, each pin triggered a different sound FX

The pins need to be grounded in a combination for speech call.
Getting sounds is good. driverboard fault suspect
connect it back up and in game over mode ground the bottom row transistors one at a time 9 to 12 to confirm sounds again.

Ok, right leg is it?

You are referring to Q9 to Q12 in the attached schematic, right?

In any case, thanks a lot for your help and hints

9-13 sound transistors

Done, each one of them started a sound FX when triggered (middle pin to ground)

driverboard isn't able to trigger the sounds in solenoid test. fault on driverboard

Think we have a misunderstanding

My post above said "When I tried through the test mode, on tests 02, I got the following with nothing reacting at all:

=> 9 to 12 are working in test mode and triggering the sounds

You mentioned the sound and speech worked when the test button pressed on sound board.
so no solenoids fire but the sounds work?

Test button on sound board=> all sounds are ok, including voices
When going on solenoid test => 9 to 12 do trigger sounds. Did not get any voice.

When in play: no heartbeat, no voice, only sound FX

1 transistor isn't functioning even if all sounds are heard in test the cpu tells the 9-13 outputs to turn more than one of the 5 transistors on in a combination to call up speech so next is pause each position 9-13 and check that there is a pulse for all five outputs, at least one is definitely missing

#27 4 years ago

Yep, 13 is not doing anything. So I need to replace both Q38 and Q39 I guess.
Will check of I have some in my stock.

edit: retested, and indeed Nr 13 is not triggering in test mode, but does activate a sound when I ground the center plug.
Don't have a TIP120 to change it; you think it is related to the TIP 120?
Is it also causing the absenc eof heartbeats?

#28 4 years ago

Sound output trigger at 13 must produce a signal so normal heartbeat/speech will return.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback! Have ordered a TIP120 to repair this

So, TIP120 has been changed.
13 is now activating when I test manually but still nothing in test mode.

Still no voice nor heartbeat :'-(

Diver fault continues:
Follow the signals blue arrows with logic probe in test for pulses at the locations.
Change 2n4401 circled.

Changed with a brand new 4401 and I had strange behaviours happening.
Put back the old one: back to normal (except voices of course).

For the other stuff, I have ordered a logic probe and will resume when it arrives.

Is this still an issue? You might want to try these test ROMs: http://pincoder.ca specifically, the 11-sounds ROM will help you diagnose problems..
