Hey folks! Just bought my first pin - it's a non-working Gorgar. On start up it has what I've been told by someone, is an error msg that means the batteries or Ram is bad. I'm a total newb with zero tech experience but my pinsider buddy and I are gonna try and figure that out this week some time. Just wanted to pop in and say hi. So Hi!

Quoted from paynemic:

Congrats! I’m sure it will fire right up. Seems like that ram error had more to do with coin door interlock or something like that. I can’t remember where I think I heard that from though...

I tried that to no avail but I ordered a new remote battery pack and will install that this weekend. The board where the original is mounted looks good but like I said, I'm a bit of a dummy when it comes to this stuff.

So I bought my machine about a month ago and because of slow chip delivery and a vacation, I haven't gotten it up and running yet. I did, however, install the new flipper paddles I ordered. This is my first pinball related repair and at the risk of coming across as an irritating newb, I was pleased with myself. Also in the pic is the cyclops skull I plan on fixing to the top when all is said and done.

Playfield looks great! One day, I'll refurbish mine!
If the game has problems when you fire it up, and you have an eprom programmer, I have some free test ROMs available for download that you can use to help locate the problems. http://pincoder.reversion.ca They can be run in-game and dont require a lot of knowledge to use them. They were even designed and tested on my own Gorgar.
Here's the official discussion thread on them: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/new-williams-system-6-in-game-test-roms#post-4545063
Craig

Thanks Craig! There's some wear in the typical spots but nothing too crazy.

Like I said, I'm totally new to pinball ownership and I haven't considered diagnostics yet. Just waiting on the RAM to arrive and see what happens after I get that changes out. I will hopefully figure out the test ROMs thing and run those asap. I'll let you know how it goes! Now, to the thread to figure out what the hell I got myself into!

Quoted from pincoder:

Just noticed that you're in Edmonton. Cool.
Which RAM chip are you replacing?
If you have a 6802 CPU (IC1) the RAM chip on the left (IC13) is not required. You just need to add a 4.7K resistor to R4 and remove the J1 jumper. IC16 (The RAM chip on the right) is always required.
If you have the 6808 CPU then you need to remove R4, install the jumper in J1, and install the 6810 RAM chip in IC13.

So I'll meet you at Pinbar one of these days?
OK, I'm taking down all these notes and will decipher them! When we switched the 6810chips (put the left in the right and right in the left position), we got the game to go from attract mode with an error msg to where the flippers will work and different playfield lights illuminated then before. I figured I would just switch both chips out for brand new ones and see where it was from there. Does that sound like a reasonable tact or should I rejig that board anyway?

Ever wonder if there was any back masking on the red record that Williams used for promotional material??

If not, then that was a totally missed oportunity!

Okay, so brief history: I bought my machine and it didn't work. It had what I heard was a ram error msg (1496 1)on the player one display with 04/00 on the plays and match display. We removed the AA battery unit and put in a non-mounted one. We also took the left ram chop and switched it with the right and Gorgar would introduce himself and the flippers would work, some playfield lights would turn on, displays would reset. Once, the ball even loaded too but the bumpers weren't responsive and everything was dead otherwise. So I ordered new RAM and installed the chips and I ended up back to square one with the original error msg. After trying to turn on/off quickly a few times with coin door open, the error msg disappeared, displays are blank, playfield lights stopped lighting, and Gorgar lost his voice. I removed the 2boards thinking I would get them rebuilt/replaced but thought I'd ask you folks if that was a sound plan or should I try something else first? Also, I'm a total, non computer/electronics nerd and so I'm trying to learn but Im not at all familiar with stuff. I'm including a pic of the boards because I think the Ram slot might be installed upside down but not sure if that would make a difference. Any advice?
