I'm in the club! Wanted one for some time but never saw that good deal with a decent Gorgar that was'nt bare wood PF. Grabbed this one locally for damn near free. It seems like it was in a home for a long time. Very clean art work is in really nice shape as is the PF. I've never seen one with the manual mounted on the inside like this before? Anyone else have one stapled there? Started to LED it up and I'll tear it down, clean, wax, and new rubbers. Flippers were never rebuild! Looks like a good amount of connectors were replaced and some board work done. 2 fuses blown and it came right up been playing ever since. I've owned a Jungle Lord for 25 years and a BK so I'm familiar with these at least. Any cool must mods?

Quoted from Blknblumark:

That PF is in amazing shape! Congrats!

Thanks guys! I don't think it was vended long if at all that's for sure. Most of the PF's I've seen are beat. Can't wait to get some wax on it!

Quoted from Hyperion:

Just got some wax put down and new flipper bats.
Waiting on a new CPU gotta clean replace drops.

Looks good! You have the manual as well. I've never seen that before. What wax did you use? I'll be doing all this to my Gorgar soon!

NVram for Gorgar 5101 ?

Awesome and thanks for the pic as well! I just ordered up!

Just noticed our Gorgar's are exactly 1000 serial numbers from each other.

My choice....

I use the same stuff. Works great. I usually spray wax the PF's on my pins once a month depending on use and it really keeps them playing fast and helping to avoid dirt damage.

Did some work on Gorgar today. I added NVram and wound up flowing solder on all molex headers on both boards including the big one. I can't believe this board is untouched after all these years. One transistor replaced at some point but all original solder. Talk about cracked solder all over. I wound up flowing every header and now my one pop bumper is locking on! Doh! Nothing like taking a working game and make issues! ha! Damn near every header had at least one or more pins cracked. So I'm guessing I'll be replacing one of the transistors for the pop bumpers. My displays are acting strange now as well. I flowed the power board as well that was loaded with cold solder joints as well. Have a look at my after work let me know what you guys think. On a positive note the NVram is working. I'm also missing the cover on my flipper control relay and that got knocked a bit and the flippers are not working either so I'll have to investigate there as well. Always fun keeping these old pins working.

I found these on Marco's site. Did you order those from there? Is that 5W 27Ohms you used? Thanks for the tip! I'm going to order some transistors from them for that pop bumper.

Someone really loved Gorgar that's for sure!

#1184 3 years ago

NVram is good. Flippers are good again. Displays seemed to have settled down. Damn flipper relay cover is missing and working on the board I knocked them out. A new transistor for the one pop bumper and we are back in business. Time to shop it out and LED it up this week.

Ah crap more stuff to do! Thanks for the reminder! I have some fuse holders and fuses so this should be a quick and easy one to do.

#1191 3 years ago
Quoted from sparksterz:

Oh...I just rewatched my initial power on video closely. The GI did turn on with the machine, but went out in less than 2 seconds... guessing that'd be a short?

Have all the boards been checked for cold solder as well? Check fuses, check molex connectors, check for cold solder, caps done on the power supply?, check voltages where they should be.

Added a little bling to Gorgar tonight in-between plays Tomorrow she gets shopped out finally.

Spent the day with Gorgar. Tear down, clean, wax, and polish all parts. Complete flipper rebuild, eos switches, cabinet switches, lite-o-matic flipper buttons, fixed a ton of misc odds and ends under the PF from being in a home a long time the home owner was not a pin guy so we all know how that works out. Flippers are a little weak after the rebuild I'll have to tinker with the switches. Plays much faster that's for sure. Went with a red LED theme why not. Few green towers. red LED strip under the apron. I'm going to light kick out on the left side. I got the rubber kit from PBR thank god I had tons of spares. For some reason my one pop bumper is not working. I added the Comet disc's to them. Might be the socket as it was working before. Well it's 90% done at least Made a little video as well here...

Some more tweaks on Gorgar today. Not sure if anyone noticed on my first video the one pop bumper led was'nt working. Found a busted diode under the PF so I fixed that and it's working again. I also added a bendie for the kick out and lite that up. So a new video was in order!

I added some better music this time... enjoy!

New backglass to top off the project I think I'm finally done tweaking it.

Quoted from sparksterz:

Hmm...began attempting to troubleshoot the short and it's now gone. Pulled all GI to the playfield and turned it on and my in-line circuit breaker didn't blow. I then took my new LED bulbs and put 1 in the socket and turned the machine on to verify between each bulb until I was done and they were all in and I had no shorts.
So, it's probably one of these 4 things.
1. I re-pinned the yellow male pin that led to the playfield GI.
2. I loosed up some of the playfield harness which may have wiggled free a shorted cable
3. A shorted bulb (which is odd because it had been working with the old bulbs prior).
4. The GI braid was touching something that it no longer is.
Either way I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. First things first I'm going to staple down this GI braid while I turn on the machine between each staple to ensure I haven't caused an issue.
Then, I guess it's time to tighten the harness back up and see if there's a scorched or raw wire somewhere. Then if everything's good, hopefully I can get on with the rest of this swap!

That GI braid can be a bastard from people working under the PF over the years for sure. I remember when I was shopping mine out there was a few places it was really close to something metal! I've ran into a few bad sockets on mine as well so that's always a question point. If it's working walk away and play!

Oh yes them Coin slot InsertS are sweet.

I think your Gorgar was the first one I ever seen. When I was in the arcades as a kid Black Knight owned the place. That's all everyone wanted to play. But after seeing the one you had, I've wanting one since just could not find a nice one. Well till now

Quoted from paynemic:

Drops are tricky. Make sure the mounting holes are drilled right. I had to remount them. Also, the rubber rings will rub on the back and slow them down if the posts up there are drilled wrong (mine all were). I had to really stretch the ring in that area to thin it (or i used a smaller one, can’t remember ) to keep it from catching them

I did the same on mine. The rubber ring from the Marco kit was too big for the drop targets and was hitting the backside. Thankfully I have a huge bag of extra white rubbers and I just went a size smaller.

#1221 3 years ago
Quoted from sparksterz:

huh...unfortunately I'm still mid-playfield swap so all the rubbers are off, but I'll definitely pay attention to that when I get it all back together.

Yup! If you bought a Marco kit the rubbers for behind the drop target are wrong. Too big. Just did mine last month and the drops were dragging on the rubber.

You guys do know there was a song "Gorgar" right? Here is my red as hell blood bath Gorgar video with the song Gorgar. $100 Craigslist grab a few years back. All LED's from Comet, Through led strip, lighted flipper and start buttons, and I found an NOS backglass for it I installed after I made this video. I'm going to install the NMP drop target upgrade next. Awesome game!

Cool tune!
** NMP drop target upgrade is the best thing you can do!
I used these. No worry about the glue shattering and easy clean installation. Clean drop targets and magnets with alcohol before applying pads. Also rough up the magnet with some sand paper like 320 grit for some tooth.
https://www.theclip.com/store/3m-vhb-double-sided-adhesive-small-round.html
Here is an interesting post for alternative NMP drop target installation. Great idea for permanent magnet installation that uses rivets rather than glue!

Not a fan of the all-red lighting. Too dark and the red throws all the playfield art colors off and washes it out (over saturation). Check out how bad it can get on this thread LOL.

Thanks for the links this will be my Saturday eve project! The only thing that sucks with LED's is when you have one color like I did with the red they do no photograph well at all. In person, ball tracking, and the over all saturation is actually nice. I lite the advance kicker pop out with a white LED and that breaks up more then it shows. Also a little green up top helps and the white in the outlane. I didn't want to make clown puke with tons of different colors and with the Gorgar theme it felt mainly red to me. But I agree, I sent some of the finished pics to some pin friends they said the same thing too much red but when they finally came over to play it they were like "damn that looks badass!" Unless you do all white the camera does not photograph leds well. I'll post an update once I get the new NMP drop targets in. Can't wait to see how they work.
