I use a 200 Watt 6.5" 8 ohm Pyramid mid range subwoofer from Amazon. They're cheap and it improves the sound immediatly. I really don't think it needs anything else.

Direct bolt in replacement? LOL man why would anyone pay $65 for one... sheesh!

Easy swap, perfect alignment, no mods!
Quoted from pinster68:I think any speaker replacement will improve Gorgars sound. In my case it was this one:
Is that 8 ohms?

Is that a comment on your $11 upgrade or a reason to pay $65??
Yes, double check the speaker resistance and the Pyramid speaker aligns with the screws exactly. Sorry, I speak in short hand sometimes.

Hmmm. The original was 8 ohms. Not sure if its an issue as long as I don't over-load the speaker. Sounds good to me.
Just another piece of info. I tried Pyle speakers which seem exactly the same but the sound was actually worse.
This is our Gorgar. I bought it for my wife for her birthday, that's right my wife asks for pinball machines for her birthday This one sat broken for 20 years in my friends basement. After he agreed to sell it to me I wiped the filth off of it and it really was spectacular. Playfield was a true 10, glass 9, cab 9. I did all Rottendog boards, 100% LED and a new Triaxle speaker that lights up red under the game. The holes in the new speakers lined up perfectly with the old one so I never had to drill a hole.
The game is one of the few that I hold dear and one of the few that definitely isn't for sale. It was such a part of my era and I clearly remember them when they were new.
So if you go a 4ohm upgrade you need to wire in some transistors...
And if you go a 8 ohm upgrade you can just wire in as-is.
Right?
Is this this only speaker on Gorgar? 100% of the sounds come from this one speaker?

Can someone upload a detailed pic of the underside of the spinner please? I am having trouble with mine and I think I am missing a piece.

Yes, only one speaker.
Can someone share the resistor setup needed for 4ohm speaker use?

Are these 4 ohm or 8 ohm? I checked Amazon and under description it says 4 but you say 8. Does it hook straight up as the replacement speaker or do I need to wire in transistors? And if so, why?
Sorry, not super knowledgable in electronics.
Oh no, I just figured out where some of the confusion is coming from. When I search for Pyramid 8 ohm speaker on Amazon.com it shows the 4 ohm speaker. And on top of that it's not very clear what resistance it is. I apologize. My BK and Space Shuttle are 4 ohm. Gorgar and my Buck Rogers are 8 ohm. So here's new link:
I'll edit the other post. Again my apologies. If you were to use the 4 ohm speaker a 4 ohm resistor would have to be added to either terminal or two 2 ohm resistors on either side, just as long as the amp sees 8 ohms worth of resistive load.

I was able to cancel the 4 ohm and order the 8 ohm with no problems so thank you for clarifying. I just want the easiest solution. Just replace the old speaker with the new and be off to races.
Thank you!
To my knowledge, and this was done some time ago, you either use a 4ohm resistor, or 2-8 ohm resistors in parallel. I know that sounds funny, but apparently 8ohm and 8ohm = 4ohm. By parallel, I mean you solder each end of the resistors together.
I thought that 4 and 4 = 8 too, but I was corrected by an electrical engineer.
I was thinking about the resistors in series 1+1=2. Parallel circuits RT=1/1+1 or something like that. Precisely why I keep a test meter! It never lies
Quick question. Does anyone know offhand how many bulbs Gorgar needs for both play field, inserts and GI (including backbox). It doesn't say in the manual anything except a wonky bulb matrix that shows only around 64 bulbs but it doesn't cover any of the back box or GI really.
I'm looking at getting some of the warm frosted LED's for this game and I'm at work so I can't count them here.
Anyone?
Thanks John. Much appreciated.
I ordered 90, so I hope that's a good start. I usually don't fully populate the back box either.
Funny story. I ordered the speaker that cwg29 uses and when I went to put it in, I think my spade connectors were not strong enough. So here I was down under Gorgar with the playfield up and messing around with the speaker wires (the machine was powered off) when all of a sudden my elbow hit the direct current.
ZAP!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gorgar got me! I freaked out and instinctively moved up hitting my head on the bottom of drop target assembly, causing the whole playfield to fall down and hit me in the head again.
BAM!!!!!!!!!!!
GORGAR GOT ME!!!! again.
I was stunned and once my anger subsided I turned on the machine and everything worked EXCEPT NO AUDIO.
I think I may have blew the sound board. But all hope is not lost as it MAY be the volume pot that went bad. I put a meter on it and it was acting very funky going back and forth from 5K. So I have a new pot coming today that I am going to test. If that doesn't fix the problem then it has to be the sound board (or a chip on it).

LOL I told you that it eats souls...
Got him back to life and with the new speaker that cwg29 recommended. Awesome!!!
He's a sexy man beast now cwg29!

The red flippers and white rubbers are a nice touch!
My Gorgar has been out of commission for an embarrassing amount of time (maybe 2 years). I finally got a new MPU board and it's back to life and working perfect. Will be messing around with LEDs and getting it running fast as can be ... then I'll see about that playfield swap I've been wanting to do.
p.s., Hey PinballerChef you're pics are no longer visible (FORBIDDEN).

Yeah not quite sure what's going on with that?? I was in another thread and the OPs pics said the same thing....I'm viewing this on my iPad 1st gen. Thing is I posted these from my iPhone 4 and I can see the pics on there BUT when I click the actual JPEGS from my iPhone it says "forbidden". I am not sure if this is currently a PINSIDE issue or something I did on my part....they were visible before.

Have they made playfield repo's? I have a spare Gorgar playfield hanging as a wall ornament but its a little warped and needs to be airbrushed. Seems easier to wait for a repo than to be trying to paint all those small details.

No repro. Mine was an NoS playfield I had restored by HEP.
So the only pin I played today was Gorgar. Brutally short games ... felt like I was playing an EM ... loved every minute of it.
I highly recommend a few basic maintenance items with Gorgar. You'll notice the improvement.
1) Service the flippers completely (adjust the flippers, fresh set of rubbers, clean the bushings, coil sleeves, linkage, and all switch contacts including the flipper button contacts)
2) Wax the playfield with 100% carnauba
3) Adjust the spinner switch to limit resistance, and put an ever-so-small dot of oil on the two spinner axle contact points
4) Adjust & clean the sling and pop bumper contacts to ensure maximum response
5) Put a new ball in.
Gorgar may not be a deep game ... but good luck trying to achieve even the basic goals when it's dialed in right and playing lighting fast.
