Random question but how many speakers are on the bottom cabinet of gorgar? The machine im restoring has the bottom panel destroyed and I can’t tell. It looks like two but there was only one speaker in there.

One.

Has anyone installed one of the new speakers offered by Marco that supposedly has a better frequency response over the spectrum compared to the original speaker. Mine still has the original but at a hundred dollars is it worth it?

#1356 2 years ago

I put a “pyramid” speaker in mine. Sounds really good.

Just get this speaker. I installed it and sounds great. No reason to spend crazy money on a game with sound effects and soundboard from 1979. This speaker still gives nice base tone along with nice mids.

Thank you for this information and quick response.

I used this one in Gorgar and it worked really well, not expensive at all but it does require some cutting but my lower panel was messed up anyway.
I liked going up to a 8" and the coaxial will help with high frequencies too.

I'm 95% sure the original is an 8 ohm. I purchased a 4 ohm blindly following someone else's link years back. I'm also running a non-original sound/speech combo and it doesn't see much extended play and so far I've been alright. Wouldn't run it on location or long term that way probably though.

Quick question regarding my flipper wiring:
When I did my play field swap I upgraded the flippers. I wired everything up like it was originally and based off pictures of similar swaps, including what mof did. I didn't see a big improvement but they seem to work fine.
Today I was checking another issue and noticed that it seems like the flippers are using low voltage to flip and high voltage to hold.
Can someone take a look at the wiring pictured and see if it looks correct? These pics are Mof's but it is exactly how mine is done. I can stop the flipper with little effort until the eos switch opens, then it is very strong.
I'm very confused because it seems like it is wired correctly but is behaving like it's backwards.

Sounds like you have wiring to the E O S Switch reversed. Try reversing them.

Thanks for your suggestion. That was my first thought as well but I'm not clear exactly what to change. See my pics: I can't get them to read in the right order but you get my drift.

I guess my biggest thing is I don't understand what could be backwards if nothing change from how it was originally.

On the actual e o s switch. When the flipper is down points are closed providing full voltage, when flipper is up points open cutting voltage down in half.

This looks awesome. I really like the 3rd pic where it looks like he’s reaching for you. Seems more menacing than the other pic that makes me think of that party song “I put my hands in the air like I just don’t care”. Ha. Either way will be a cool topper. Let me know if make more than 1 and want to sell…

Ok I just joined the club and I have the machine playing pretty well except for the spinner. no matter how hard I hit it how solid or not I get like 4 hits and it stops. How do I juice the spinner to get that wonderful feeling of a job well done.

This may be oversimplification but this is what I do:
Make sure the arms aren't bent and they create a straight line.
Polish the arms and clean the holes where the arms go.
Put like a half drop of 3in1 oil on each arm.

Thanks… I was hoping to find the rottendog to replace both boards as I’ve had problems with the 40 pin connector and not exactly sure which board it is. But I also don’t know much about the replacement board, so maybe I need to just have mine gone through.

I have an intermittent flicker of the ball count on the master board and when it acts up it makes the scores flicker too. Any ideas where to look? This morning I found the problem. It was at the power connector from the M P U to the displays. Cleaned the pins and connector, also board was loose causing a slight vibration while game was in progress. Tightened board down and seems to be working well. No more flickering etc.

Added over 3 years ago:

Well this P O S is acting up again. I will never have one of these old systems again, about ready to sell it.

Added over 3 years ago:

After further observation I found the problem to be in the CPU/MPU board. Ordered one from K's Arcade for 199 dollars and installed it Sunday 7/25. Problem is gone. This company was great to deal with and I had the part in several days.

Has anyone installed a Hardtop for their Gorgar? I just bought a Hardtop and have the playfield stripped down. My question is what did you do about the inserts, did you sand until the number and letters were removed? My inserts are slightly cupped and it would take a lot of sanding to remove the letters and numbers off the inserts and might make them worse.

Thanks

Check with Tom Test on Pinside, he has done hardtops in the past and could help you.

You have to get the old art off, including inserts, otherwise you’ll have two layers of insert art on top of each other and it will look terrible. For the cupped inserts you may have to sand them separately than the rest of the playfield, with small pieces of sandpaper. You aren’t going to make them worse— you need to burn through the lacquer and the ink first. You can also try scraping with a razor blade.

Another option is to replace all the inserts with new ones. This is my preferred method, because those inserts are usually cracked and faded and look crappy anyway. It wasn’t too terribly difficult. Just takes a lot of time.

Whichever route you go, you’re going to have a lot of work ahead of you. Hard tops are awesome, but they require a lot of prep.

I have done a Firepower and a Blackout. I just picked up a Gorgar playfield to do one on soon. You could sand them by hand with a small piece of 220 grit sand paper. When you do the recommended rattle can clear spray on it before laying down the Hardtop, it might bring those inserts back up to a proper shine. I am not confident enough in my painting skills to trust that. You could also pop out the inserts, sand them and glue them back in. However, if you are going through all of that trouble, you might as well just replace them. I replaced all of the inserts on both of the games I did. Like Spraynard said, it's not hard but time consuming. There should be a number of threads on how to remove inserts if you want to go that route.

Working on a friend's Gorgar and fixing lots of little things. One question I have is what size of mounting nut keeps in the power toggle switch in place? The one in his game is missing.

STRANGE PROBLEM WITH GORGAR EGO...
He keeps telling me his name is "Gorgar".

A few days ago I did the following work (a) replaced the right flipper coil (b) re-soldered two of the wires on the lower (Gar) target board as the game was not resetting the 3 targets when completed. Yes, I did all this with the machine off!

The game worked fine for a few days.

Now, just about every time I engage the right flipper, button, the game says "Gorgar" like it does when both target sets have been completed. However, the game plays fine in all other respects including the right flipper working fine and both target sets scoring and resetting properly. I am just getting quite annoyed by Gorgar's constant shouting of his name out loud during game play!

So, I am at a loss as to the cause of this. Not sure whether this is a problem with one of the target assemblies, crossed wiring of the flipper wires with target wires (possibly initiated by sloppy solder droppings while working on the coil or GAR targets) , an issue with connections into a specific board in the backbox, a specific board that has an issue with drivers or something else?

Any guidance as to how to proceed and what to check on would be appreciated. Thanks.
