Some more tweaks on Gorgar today. Not sure if anyone noticed on my first video the one pop bumper led was'nt working. Found a busted diode under the PF so I fixed that and it's working again. I also added a bendie for the kick out and lite that up. So a new video was in order!

I added some better music this time... enjoy!

New backglass to top off the project I think I'm finally done tweaking it.

Hmm...began attempting to troubleshoot the short and it's now gone. Pulled all GI to the playfield and turned it on and my in-line circuit breaker didn't blow. I then took my new LED bulbs and put 1 in the socket and turned the machine on to verify between each bulb until I was done and they were all in and I had no shorts.

So, it's probably one of these 4 things.
1. I re-pinned the yellow male pin that led to the playfield GI.
2. I loosed up some of the playfield harness which may have wiggled free a shorted cable
3. A shorted bulb (which is odd because it had been working with the old bulbs prior).
4. The GI braid was touching something that it no longer is.

Either way I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. First things first I'm going to staple down this GI braid while I turn on the machine between each staple to ensure I haven't caused an issue.

Then, I guess it's time to tighten the harness back up and see if there's a scorched or raw wire somewhere. Then if everything's good, hopefully I can get on with the rest of this swap!

That GI braid can be a bastard from people working under the PF over the years for sure. I remember when I was shopping mine out there was a few places it was really close to something metal! I've ran into a few bad sockets on mine as well so that's always a question point. If it's working walk away and play!

I think your Gorgar was the first one I ever seen. When I was in the arcades as a kid Black Knight owned the place. That's all everyone wanted to play. But after seeing the one you had, I've wanting one since just could not find a nice one. Well till now

Edit: never mind. I found it. Wish they had done these before I did my resto with a Mirco.

lol same - I'm glad I undertook the experience at least, but yeah it was a lot more work than I expected. I still haven't finished it because I'm busy cursing these GD drop targets...I can't get them to slide smoothly to save my life.

Drops are tricky. Make sure the mounting holes are drilled right. I had to remount them. Also, the rubber rings will rub on the back and slow them down if the posts up there are drilled wrong (mine all were). I had to really stretch the ring in that area to thin it (or i used a smaller one, can’t remember ) to keep it from catching them

I did the same on mine. The rubber ring from the Marco kit was too big for the drop targets and was hitting the backside. Thankfully I have a huge bag of extra white rubbers and I just went a size smaller.

#1220 3 years ago

huh...unfortunately I'm still mid-playfield swap so all the rubbers are off, but I'll definitely pay attention to that when I get it all back together.

Yup! If you bought a Marco kit the rubbers for behind the drop target are wrong. Too big. Just did mine last month and the drops were dragging on the rubber.

Finally got those bastard drop targets dropping well. I did the washer trick, new back plates, I originally out on replacement horse shoes and I thought they worked worse than the originals so I cleaned up the old ones and readjusted them. Now they're for the first time in my ownership dropping like they're supposed to!

Nightmare. I payed someone. I never saw a drop, drop so slow before.....slow motion and 5 direct hit later....all good now...

He told me. He had to remove a couple of the manufacturers Machine Screws. The drop mechanism was warped and binding.

#1233 3 years ago

Dumb gameplay/strategy question. When collecting GOR and GAR on the same ball, you light the left kickout for 10K. Repeating this lights it for 15K. You can then trap the ejection, post pass, and hit it again. Is this possible forever? Does this ruin it as a tourney game?

Always thought 1-2-3-4 ==> 50K Pit Shot was the strategy, usually stumbling into a D+E along the way spotting a number. But that's a lot of risky side to side motion. The drops are a lot safer and then the repetition of the 10K or 15K kickout seems very easy, especially if it never goes away and carries over each ball.

#1234 3 years ago

An easy feed from the kickout can make that the go-to strategy, but you can change the setup to have it hit the sling or something.

If you can alley pass for D+E to spot numbers, that's an option, but it's harder on some machines than others.

It's possible to complete the GAR bank in a single shot, and after 3 completions it scores 5k per target plus 5k for completion. After 4 it lights an outlane special which can be set to points. Lighting the pops for 1k each can pay off if your pops work well.

So there are other options for scoring good points besides that kickout, especially if you set it up for a bad feed.

It's finally complete! Minus a few tweaks I have yet to do I've gotten the whole playfield swapped. Unfortunately I also didn't learn from the advice of others. I thought_ my sling had enough clearance but it didn't and I got a chip out as punishment. I'm not going to let that ruin my excitement though. It's leagues better than my old playfield!

Awesome news about the hardtops. I added one to my Christmas list.

I do wish the companies licensing Williams stuff were more upfront about what's coming. I asked some time ago in a hardtop thread when CPR had Gorgar on the pipeline if there could be a Gorgar hardtop. The response from the company was that there would never be a hardtop for a title being produced (or planned) by another pf manufacturer, but this Gorgar release is in direct contradiction to that statement.

Someone who had read that prior to the Gorgar hardtop would think the recent pf release was going to be the only option. Personally, I think hardtop is more in line with the overall value of a Gorgar, so I'm glad I didn't jump on a pf when those came out.

Cross your fingers this is a breakthrough! This was a small miracle. Let’s just say when I got the call he could do Gorgar I got that playfield stripped, crated and shipped out in like a day!

I know you don’t have to convince Outside Edge that there should be a hardtop for any pin that a “hardtop is more in line with the overall value” of said machine... Hopefully people continue to buy Firepower and Gorgar and show that there is a market for hardtops and repro playfields and this leads for more licensing opportunities of Williams titles. I would love a Flash hardtop!!!
