I helped out with the Blackout donor playfield for the hardtop... can you guess what title I’m working on with them right now... still few/several weeks away (don’t rush the process)

I'm in the club! Wanted one for some time but never saw that good deal with a decent Gorgar that was'nt bare wood PF. Grabbed this one locally for damn near free. It seems like it was in a home for a long time. Very clean art work is in really nice shape as is the PF. I've never seen one with the manual mounted on the inside like this before? Anyone else have one stapled there? Started to LED it up and I'll tear it down, clean, wax, and new rubbers. Flippers were never rebuild! Looks like a good amount of connectors were replaced and some board work done. 2 fuses blown and it came right up been playing ever since. I've owned a Jungle Lord for 25 years and a BK so I'm familiar with these at least. Any cool must mods?

Thanks guys! I don't think it was vended long if at all that's for sure. Most of the PF's I've seen are beat. Can't wait to get some wax on it!

Just got some wax put down and new flipper bats.
Waiting on a new CPU gotta clean replace drops.

I got a Gorgar in a super rough condition and I've been restoring it to the best of my abilities. I noticed a lot of people including myself was confused about the fuses needed for the machine. A lot of the labels went missing for them so I decided to research and put together a fuse sheet (With the magic of mspaint!) to print off and keep with the machine. I wrote based on what the schematics says (I trust that more then the universal sticker inside the head). Can someone look it over for me in case I got something wrong or missing something? I hope this can be useful for others in the future as well.

Thanks for sharing! I'm hoping to swap to these on mine while doing my playfield swap. I'm having a hard time figuring out which wires go to what as I'm a bit unfamiliar with how flipper solenoids work. It looks like if looking from the back of the coil stop to the rubber bumper, that the right two lugs go to the EoS switch? The fact that the wires are so similarly colored confuses me.

Did some work on Gorgar today. I added NVram and wound up flowing solder on all molex headers on both boards including the big one. I can't believe this board is untouched after all these years. One transistor replaced at some point but all original solder. Talk about cracked solder all over. I wound up flowing every header and now my one pop bumper is locking on! Doh! Nothing like taking a working game and make issues! ha! Damn near every header had at least one or more pins cracked. So I'm guessing I'll be replacing one of the transistors for the pop bumpers. My displays are acting strange now as well. I flowed the power board as well that was loaded with cold solder joints as well. Have a look at my after work let me know what you guys think. On a positive note the NVram is working. I'm also missing the cover on my flipper control relay and that got knocked a bit and the flippers are not working either so I'll have to investigate there as well. Always fun keeping these old pins working.

I found these on Marco's site. Did you order those from there? Is that 5W 27Ohms you used? Thanks for the tip! I'm going to order some transistors from them for that pop bumper.

NVram is good. Flippers are good again. Displays seemed to have settled down. Damn flipper relay cover is missing and working on the board I knocked them out. A new transistor for the one pop bumper and we are back in business. Time to shop it out and LED it up this week.

Today wasn't too bad! Gorgar speaks! Unfortunately Gorgar also hurt...GI is out in the backglass and playfield.

I'm sure that dumb braid has an issue somewhere, but I wasn't expecting a Christmas light style issue where if one thing is wrong, they all go out...any tips on where to start looking?

Oh...I just rewatched my initial power on video closely. The GI did turn on with the machine, but went out in less than 2 seconds... guessing that'd be a short?

You may need to repin this connector. I think GI moves along the yellows, what I am 100% sure of is mine goes out periodically and if I fish this out and move it around it comes back on.

Have all the boards been checked for cold solder as well? Check fuses, check molex connectors, check for cold solder, caps done on the power supply?, check voltages where they should be.

#1192 3 years ago
Quoted from PhillyArcade:

Yeah, using Swemmer boards for testing as it gives me LEDs on each voltage path to signal that it's good. New boards that were working well before the playfield swap so it should take them out of the equation unless a fuse blew. I'll double check over lunch, and given the 2 votes on the connector I'll be sure to check that closer.

#1193 3 years ago

Thanks boscokid and PhillyArcade you helped me track it down a bit. So, the GI fuse blew. I didn't notice right away because I was testing continuity between both points with the fuse in place because it seemed like all the fuses were fine visually.

Both blades actually test for continuity even without the fuse there...so that's concerning. I then decided to reference what boscokid mentioned. I kept my probes on the blades and removed the main GI connection plug between the backbox and the playfield and suddenly, no more continuity. So I have to assume something on that line is shorted.

I thought that the lower blade came off the transformer, and the other went to the machine. So I'm a bit confused as to how they can have a connection without a fuse, but didn't cause much bigger problems like say starting a fire. Any other places I should pay attention to? I figure next I might try to run jump wires point to point on each GI connection to see if I can figure out the pin and/or pins that are causing continuity between the fuse blades.

Thanks!

Is it just me...or is this not wired properly for GI. Keep in mind...I have not modified any of these solder connections. They're stock from when I got the machine.

These jumper wires make no sense. It looks like the GI braid was broken and re-instated, but it seems to swap polarity at some point on the line depending on if you're reading from C -> A or A -> C.

Spent the day with Gorgar. Tear down, clean, wax, and polish all parts. Complete flipper rebuild, eos switches, cabinet switches, lite-o-matic flipper buttons, fixed a ton of misc odds and ends under the PF from being in a home a long time the home owner was not a pin guy so we all know how that works out. Flippers are a little weak after the rebuild I'll have to tinker with the switches. Plays much faster that's for sure. Went with a red LED theme why not. Few green towers. red LED strip under the apron. I'm going to light kick out on the left side. I got the rubber kit from PBR thank god I had tons of spares. For some reason my one pop bumper is not working. I added the Comet disc's to them. Might be the socket as it was working before. Well it's 90% done at least Made a little video as well here...

Hmm...pulled the yellow male pin that connects the underside of the playfield to the head. It appears to be shorted to yellow-white line next to it. Good news is that now I have GI in the head, and in the coin door. So that at least isolates the problem to yellow. I'm still waiting on my service manual though so I can figure out how to trace/track this better. Also bought some mini circuit breakers so I don't blow a million fuses when testing.

Really not finding anything obvious though, so that's a bit frustrating. I guess at this point I'll remove all the playfield GI bulbs, and see if the yellow line is still making continuity on yellow-white. I plan on replacing them with LEDs anyway, but if I'm going to be resetting a breaker a lot of times, I guess I'd rather blow an incandescent than an LED bulb.
