Gorgar peeps, I’m cleaning out my stuff. I have some assorted Gorgar stuff that I’d like to go to a good home. I have an original playfield with some wear and planking and a playfield decal to combine and create a (hopefully) good looking playfield. I also have A Lot of assorted red concentric posts that Gorgar uses a lot of. Finally, I have the original flipper mechanisms pulled working from my Gorgar. I won’t charge anything if you’ll cover shipping. Pm me. I’d love to send them all to one place

Alright, ordered all new rubbers, fliptronic flipper mechs, drop target boards/horseshoes. I've got a week of furlough coming up next month and hoping to tackle this playfield swap! Anyone recommend anything else I might want before I start? It'll be my first playfield swap.

Thinking maybe I should get some new posts...but I'm not sure how easy it is to transfer some of the wire guides, any advice for those?

#1109 3 years ago
Quoted from sparksterz:

I'd get some zip ties if you want to wash the wire harnesses, toothpicks and super glue to fill mis-drilled holes if you are using a Mirco, tee nuts, a drill with sharp bits, either bit stops or tape to not drill through playfield.
Take tons of pictures before you start and at every single point along the way. You won't need most of them but you will really want to have the ones you need.
I have a bunch of pics and did my swap a couple months ago. It went pretty smooth aside from Mirco quality issues. If you need any help just message me.

Alright, I'll pick up new bits because I've abused most of mine, and drill stops because I don't trust myself with tape.

I've not used T-nuts before. Just looked up a video online and it looks pretty straightforward, drill a hole the size of the barrel and twist in something to tighten, or if you're real careful, a hammer. Is there a consistent size used? Or should I just try to pick up a variety set on Amazon?

I got some from home depot that were the wrong diameter and didn't fit. I had to order from a pinball supplier (pinball life). Don't recall the total but if you order 5 8/32 and 20 6/32 you should be good.

#1112 3 years ago

One of the big pita things for me was pounding the little wire guides straight into the top of the playfield. For me it was guaranteed minor damage every way I tried it. I had to just let go and get it done. I tried removing the clear a little bit, or not. It still flakes away.

If using a Mirco pf, take measurements. Really just don’t trust the holes. And don’t fire up the machine until you’ve verified the swing of all your mechs. First sling that fired it hit the edge of the hole and took off a chunk of clear. Sad.

The first thing you’ll notice if it’s like mine was the side rail mounting holes are all wrong and not parallel with the edges of the playfield. Hopefully Highclasspinball got that fixed. He promised me a new playfield, but then has not communicated in weeks.

#1113 3 years ago

Hmm...bummer on the fact that I can't trust the holes. I've seen that said about both CPR and Mirco PFs though, so I guess it just comes with the nature of a reproduction PF. I suppose top side holes being off will be a bit more obvious than the bottoms, but I'll be sure to fully extend any swings on a solenoid before calling it good.

Wire guides were definitely a concern for me too...I've got one that need reinforcing on my Getaway that I've been dragging my feet on. I guess I'll learn on the old Gorgar PF first.

Yeah, for now my plan is to do the flipper swap, and drop target fixes while the old PF is still there so that I can be sure it's working, then after that I'll start swapping.

Finally found my grail pin. Started repairs on cabinet and stripping playfield. I will give a thorough cleaning and clear coat. Will paint cabinet also. Seller brought it from San Diego to me in Arizona.

He has family 14 minutes from me and was really cool to do it free of charge. Soundboard rebuilt and he repaired all drop target boards. Will get new ones from Marco since cheap. It also has a new backglass and Comet LEDs.

Couple questions. What’s a good speaker upgrade for it? I was thinking about this one, but don’t want to risk damaging soundboard. Found this newer version from post here 6 years ago. Pyramid 8” 8ohm 200 watt subwoofer.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0002BEP1C/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1

It came with a Rottendog combo MPU/Driver board. Seller says when the magnet is released the pop bumpers and slings activate. Is this a normal quirk? He tried to figure out a fix but no luck?

Appreciate any help and can’t wait to finish Gorgar and get playing. Will go next to my Stern Dracula.

Not a normal quirk that I know of!

I think that’s the same (newer version) speaker I put in Gorgar. Sounds amazing.

What’s the best pitch level in your opinion?

The board in it is the 374-4 from 2018. I emailed Jim at Rottendog and hopefully he has an answer. Don’t want to buy another board since I just bought Gorgar. Not a huge problem, but it will really annoy me.

Thanks for your input on the speaker. Will go ahead and pick it up. Thanks so much!

#1123 3 years ago

Going through my Gorgar and found 2 wires that were not soldered on. Both red wires, one for pop bumper and one for a sling shot coil. Hopefully that may be the culprit of pop bumpers and sling shots triggering when magnet is released.

Cleaning and getting playfield ready for clear coat. Will update.

I designed these custom Gorgar cards and coin inserts recently based on the cabinet art. They are available in my pinside shop. The laminated cardstock card set is $7 and the coin inserts are $5 each.

Does Gorgar need non-ghosting LEDs? Or do regular LED bulbs work just fine?

Id like to replace all the bulbs with warm white 2SMD bulbs from Comet but I'm not sure if the inserts *need* non-ghosting bulbs?

I can confirm regular 2SMD bulbs from Comet work fine in inserts. I had a bunch of Natural White ones I swapped in and they look great.

Placed the order for Warm White 2SMD bulbs for the GI and backglass... can't wait to swap them in.

On a different note, does anybody have this plastic in good condition they'd be willing to sell?

Before you clearcoat the playfield paint all the areas under the plastics bright white. It will make all the difference in the world. Trust me I did thanks to vid1900s advice and it was terrific. I bought an airbrush kit and masked off the areas and sprayed it. Easy pieze

My Gorgar has a pinball pro sub and another sub (the guy I bought it from was parting out a racing game that he took it from) mounted to the backside of the inside cabinet. BASS!!

Playfield all done. Just have one drop target to adjust that isn’t going down well. Pinball Pimp stencils due to arrive tomorrow.

Stripped down the whole front of the playfield today.

Big props to the people who recommended insulation foam board. I have no idea where I would've put everything otherwise.

Otherwise...ready to start transferring:

Any recommendations on how to approach it next? The ground strap on the other one looks REALLY_ tight. Such that I would think I need to get that down first, but it looks very dependent on the final positioning of everything.

I would buy new wire.
https://pinside.com/pinball/market/shops/1041-third-coast-pinball/00662-18ga-stranded-tinned-bare-wire

Put the new wire down and then do a direct transfer. Take plenty of pics for reference. Do not trust your memory or finding pics on line. When labeling I used different colors of 1/4 electrical tape I had or painters tape and then numbered the wires when I used painters tape.

I would transfer one wire harness and all connected to it, disconnect it and transferred to the new playfield. I did that on my wife’s cyclone. I just got into pinball last year and it was our 2nd pin and my first pinball task.

Goodluck

The old playfield is free! So when it comes to trying to verify the position of the t-nuts, is it safe to measure from the back side of the old playfield, and cross check that against the new one? So far my dimples/holes haven't been too far off if at all.

Slow but steady progress. Trying to meticulously measure everything that needs hammered in because y'all made me paranoid. So far I'm coming in within a couple tenths of a millimeter for most holes. Things seem to be going well, but slow unfortunately.

Most of the holes on my reproduction playfield are lining up pretty well. I've only had to adjust a handful. Mostly with the side rails, but for most of them it wasn't hard to adjust. We'll see if I eat my foot later when I'm mounting the top side!
