I got my hands on a decent Judge Dredd and would like to do it some "justice." It's going to be a beautiful machine when I'm done with it. Please follow along. There will be a few modifications made but I don't want to give anything just yet.

First comes the tear down. The playfield had a full Mylar on it, not sure if it was stock, it did not leave behind alot of residue.

Main ramps removed. Plastic ramps are in good shape. A couple of tabs broken but nothing major or bad enough to be worth replacing.

#3 6 years ago

Now to remove the rest of the plastics.

The back board decal had begun to curl up on itself and it's too brittle to fix. I have a new back board decal on the way. The police lights are also cracked but i was able to repair them and also have new police light decals. The plastics aren't great but I can't find any replacements except for the slingshots. Still looking to buy a plastic set if anyone knows where they can be found.

There's alot of metal guides on Judge Dredd. Way more than I've seen on any other game. What other game has this many metal guides?

And lastly take off the posts and flippers. Then put it on my rotisserie to remove, clean and rebuild all the mechs.

Judge Dredd is ready to be clearcoated. I wont go as far as removing the harness and light sockets. I will tape everything off and plug the sockets to avoid getting clear or overspray on anything.

#7 6 years ago

Clearcoated and ready to be re-assembled. I let it sit for a couple weeks before putting it back together.

All the metal guides and posts have been polished.
I opted to go with orange rubber posts. So far it's looking really nice.
I rebuilt all the mechs and re-installed them .I also put leds in for all the inserts. Next comes the ramps and plastics and g.i. leds.

Alright!! Now I'm all caught up on this post and everything from here out will be in real time so updates may be a little slower.

This next picture was my inspiration and I hope in the end my JD will look as good if not better than it.

NOT MINE

NOT MINE
However I have already got all my brass parts in and even found this blank coindoor on eBay, it was alot cheaper than a complete one.

JD is a really cool Pin,I really enjoyed having one cool music,DCS sound, funny qoutes, and a lot more to offer my kids loved it especially when the guy falling off the roof!!(I can see my house from here!!)The smiles and laughs on the kids faces...Priceless...Thank God it's based off the comic book and not the movie.
There's an ad here on Pinside for 2 JD Pins I would love to pull the trigger on this one but not the right time,if it was years ago i would have jumped on it right when i seen it.

Looking nice, and i enjoy the gold on it alot! Kinda envious though since if i coat any metal on a pinball here in Sweden i get yelled at by purists

Got the plastics on. Still looking for a new set of plastics if anyone has some.

20180409_125503 (resized).jpg20180409_125503 (resized).jpg

But not all the plastics. I'm still waiting on new posts and also a new backboard decal. And eventually have to get the dead world mod.

#19 6 years ago

Well that's about as far as I can go with the playfield for now.
So onto the cabinet. I have new decals and alot of gold!
The cabinet is solid but really faded. Its a shame I have to sand down this custom hand painted head, whoever did this touch-up did a fantastic job.

Now to my least favorite part... stripping the old decals off. I use a heat gun and a paint scraper.

Great effort - can't wait to see it completed! If only I had the bandwidth to do all this to mine.

#23 6 years ago

So far so good...

Following don't forget the gold flipper bats and red rubbers.

#25 6 years ago
Quoted from kvan99:

Originally I wanted to gold plate all the metal on the pf. But there is so much metal that I will not be doing thatdue to cost, well not yet atleast. So the flippers will be black with orange rubbers.

I'm in the middle of priming and painting the cabinet for decals will update tomorrow.

#27 6 years ago

First coat of primer done. Sanded and added another coat of primer. Now time to add the black base coat and clear.

20180416_081204 (resized).jpg20180416_081204 (resized).jpg

While waiting for paint to dry I prepped the backboard by painting it and adding new decals.

Cabinet decals going on smoothly. Just like with painting the prep work is the key to success.

Decals look great. Where did you wind up getting them from? How's the quality ?

#37 6 years ago

Brilliant looking!

Can I add a thought... buy the pbl leg spacers... install them, razor around them and remove the decal behind them, re install the spacer.... install leg. No wrinkle in the decal.

As it stands you may have started the wrinkling process behind those black leg protectors.

Totally agree...would hate for your decals to wrinkle. Follow this advice ASAP!

#39 6 years ago

I too have heard you do not want to use those plastic protectors on your new decals.

Look so good!

#42 6 years ago

Still need to do the head decals and install the topper. But got anxious and put the pf in. Working out some kinks now.

20180423_153913 (resized).jpg20180423_153913 (resized).jpg

#43 6 years ago

Working out some kinks. I'd never turned it on before restoring it so I had no clue what issues it had. So far I've fixed switch matrix issue (my fault, I hooked up some connections wrong) lamp matrix issue. Replaced a couple opto emitters. Another switch issue, pins on driver board had solder cracks. And lastly the flashers don't work but i ordered a new capacitor for c11 it is bubbled on the top. Still waiting on parts for that.

Might want to install some balls in your Meltdown lane tho!

I want to get the neon green balls for the meltdown. I've seen it done and it looks nice.

Here's an example but blue.

Do the reactor mod! You’ll love it

That does look cool. I always thought gold balls would look really cool in there.

What is the reactor mod? I can't find anything about it.

Nice job dude. Looks great, and JD is a sweet pin.

The reactor upgrade basically uses the cooling towers from TSPP. When lit up, they look fantastic. It requires a bit of surgery, but it may be worth it if you like the look.

Check the JD owners thread.

#50 5 years ago

Don’t do the reactor mod, it blocks the view of captive balls. Just go green balls. I did.
