So today I went to a charity pinball tournament. Basically, I played non stop for about 3 hours on cement floors. After a while, I began to get this odd "hand fatigue" which I was not sure if it was from my hands supporting my body weight as I lean, or them just being crumpled around a machine for so many hours.

As I played longer and longer, the palms of my hands began to feel worn out... somehow. I had this thought that "if only I were wearing padded gloves" I would feel better. And then I thought "Who in the heck would wear gloves to play pinball?".

I asked some of the more experienced players around, and they quickly named off some top level IFPA players who in fact: use gloves. So that got me thinking...

Is it common to wear gloves while playing pinball? Does anyone here do it? What advice or stories related to glove pinball playing can you share with us?

Sorry in advance for the silly (but honest) topic. lol

I've seen at least 4 players at PAPA/Pinburgh who wear gloves. Some have the fingers cut out, or buy special gloves without fingers. Not sure what sport they are actually made for. I say more power to them if it helps their game. But I must admit, it looks a bit silly to me.

I've never worn gloves for pinball.

As a consolation, here's a picture of Michael Jackson getting ready to play Black Knight 2000.

If you do wear gloves.....please do not admit it. That just screams "I have absolutely no testicles whatsoever". I apologize to the ladies, obviously this does not apply to you.

I have seen an increase in the number of people wearing gloves. Both the full and fingerless, not for me personally but I guess it helps with hygiene .

    #7 10 years ago

Some wear gloves so they don't have to worry about the sweaty hands of the other players.
So what you want to use if you would choose to wear them are the gloves that provide some grip. The thinner style of garage gloves (worn by car mechanics) are the ones you want.

With all the fingerprints on my tron le I'm going to start wearing white gloves.

    #9 10 years ago

    #10 10 years ago

Based on some of those shows I have been to, I have been thinking about carrying a pack of disposable gloves with me. If guys aren't able to shower, I can only imagine what else they are doing with their hands...

    #14 10 years ago

    I prefer mittens.

Bill Callaghan out of Belmar would wear rubber gloves with the tips of the fingers cut off when he was dominating Flash, Gorgar and Black Knight back in 1980. I never understood the benefit, but he was the best player I've ever seen.

I know some tournament players that wear gloves. I had contemplated it myself after coming home from a multiple day event and my hands were red and sore from slap-saving so much.

I wear fingerless gloves and it I feel gives me an advantage! Keeps my palms from getting all sweaty and slipping. Also gives me a better grip on the machine also just is what I feel comfortable with kinda my security blanket. I play better with them on than off so yeah haha! Personal preference is all I guess

    Basically I'd say,
    At home - Hell no!
Hangin out at the local arcade/pub with buddies - Hell no!
Playing in a tournament - I'd say if you're playing for 2-3 days, they might help the fatigue
on your hands. "Jack hammer" gloves that have thick padded palms would probably
    work good.
But I'd still wait until I started to "feel the burn".

I have to share mine! I'm such a nerd haha

So, Rotordave, you're a throw caution to the wind guy and play pinball without gloves? Amazing! Lol.

Yeah, if I wore that outfit to a tournament, I'm pretty sure gloves would be the last thing people talked about...

I wonder how the girl in the photograph looks today, considering that she is at least 38 years older than she was when it was taken?
