Listen to Les Paul himself tear up the guitar solo in this perfect pop song. Where do you think Yingwe got his sweep-picking ideas from?
Les Paul & Mary Ford Show: The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise
Dear one, the world is waiting for the sunrise.
Ev'ry rose is covered with dew
And while the world is waiting for the sunrise
And my heart is calling you.
(instrumental break)
Dear one, the world is waiting for the sunrise.
Every little rose bud is covered with dew
And my heart is calling you
The thrush on high his sleepy mate is calling
And my heart is calling you.
Quoted from Frippertron:Genesis- Carpet Crawlers
Good one! Great example of distilling the Prog Rock bag of tricks into a great Pop tune, an approach that obviously payed off in a big way for them in the 80s.
Made me think of “Kayleigh” by Marillion (one of very few true Prog bands in the 80s):
Quoted from Thermionic:Great example of distilling the Prog Rock bag of tricks into a great Pop tune, an approach that obviously payed off in a big way for them in the 80s.
Genesis wasn't the only prog rock band to find pop success in the 80's. "Owner of a Lonely Heart" was one heck of a great pop song in its own right ...
I like the perfect unknown. Some good ones shared so far, many well known.
Perfect pop songs of the unknown or not big airplay-
West Indian Girl- What are you afraid of
and one more not well known, definitely pop. When I put this on to peeps that haven't heard it, I get a reaction a good amount of the time...
Kitchens of Distinction- Drive the Fast
I guess my definition of “pop” music differs quite a bit from most of what I’ve seen posted here. However, at the risk of being shamed, anytime I hear Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” I can’t help but smile while it is stuck not my head for the next few hours. Not my style of music at all, and I certainly don’t seek it out, but when it crosses my path I don’t turn away.
- Upbeat, check
- Simple tune, check
- Catchy repeating lyrical hook, check
- Happy sound, check
- Appeals to the masses, check
- A little embarrassing to admit you like it, ABSOLUTELY
I’d also throw Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” into the ring for similar reasons as above.
My vote is camilla “havanna”
As sung by a rubber chicken!
If you have not seen this kid he is worth a watch. Very funny!
I got a few variations.
Come on....one of the best. Can’t beat Fieldy’s clanky ass bass. And a heavy band transition that’s catchy. Got the Life - Korn
Mother Mother - Tracy Bonham
Idioteque - Radiohead
Quoted from jibmums:"Cherry Lips" by Garbage
I’ll second that...and Shirley Manson was sexy too to boot. Happy When it Rains was a good one too.
Quoted from vid1900:Unforgettable Hook, Upbeat Tempo, 'Like it the first time you hear it' songcraft
Well shit Vid, why didn't you say that earlier.... Turn this up to 11 and get ready for some digital crack cocaine at the 1:52 mark.....
Quoted from DirtyDeeds:A bubblegum pop song, sung by Vince Lovegrove and The Valentines. Check out Bon Scott pre AC/DC...
holy holy shit, I don't know if you made my day or ruined it, I had no idea. The best part of this is Bon Scott's absolutely horrible dancing to the song, its like he's the person with the worst natural rhythm ever. Or maybe he just didn't give a damn, knowing that he was destined for greatness in something completely different.
"Love Will Keep Us Together" by The Captain & Tennille is about as catchy and poppy as they come ...
Quoted from Thermionic:Good one! Great example of distilling the Prog Rock bag of tricks into a great Pop tune, an approach that obviously payed off in a big way for them in the 80s.
Made me think of “Kayleigh” by Marillion (one of very few true Prog bands in the 80s):
I'm a Warm Wet Circles/That Time of the Night fan myself. Always loved Marillion, still do, Their last album, Fuck Everyone And Run was great!
More rock/blues than pop but I was floored to find out Jet Airliner was not a Steve Miller song. Paul Pena wrote and recorded this in 1973.
Quoted from Gryszzz:When I think of "perfect" and "pop music" together, the only thing I can come up with is Taylor Swift's legs.

I'll raise your ts with a Katy Perry Dark Horse. It's on bitches!

Just like when people find out that Robert Hazard wrote "Girls Just Want To have Fun"
Much better than the Cindi Leper cover, and when a man sings it, it kinda takes on a different meaning, doesn't it?
Robert Hazard - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father says, "My boy, what do you want from your life?"
Father dear, you are the fortunate one
Girls just wanna have fun
Yeah, girls just wanna have fun
Come home with the morning light
My mother says, "My boy, you've got to start living right."
Don't worry, mother dear, you're still number one
Girls just wanna have fun
These girls just wanna have fun
That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls just wanna have fun
Yeah, girls just wanna have fun
Some guys take a beautiful girl
They try to hide her away from the rest of the world
All my girls have got to walk in the sun
'Cause girls just wanna have fun
Yeah, girls just wanna have fun
I know your love for him
Is deep as day is long
I know you'd never be the
Thing to do him wrong
But when I knock on the door
I'm close now, you could come
It really wasn't important
'Cause girls just wanna have fun
Yeah, girls just wanna have fun
It's all they really want
Good fun
When the working day is done
Girls just wanna have fun
Yeah, girls just wanna have fun
(Just wanna, just wanna)
Come on, boy
(Just wanna, just wanna)
Oh yeah
(Just wanna, just wanna)
You are the fortunate one
Girls just wanna have fun
Yeah, girls just wanna have fun
(Just wanna, just wanna)
Come here, boy
(Just wanna, just wanna)
Oh, yeah
(Just wanna, just wanna)
You are the fortunate one
Girls just wanna have fun
Yeah, girls just wanna have fun

Vid...always educating. I did not know that (sadly in light of being a musician for 30 years of my life)
The versatility in this thread is astounding.
Not my genre of choice but I'm pretty impressed by all this shitty music I've never heard.
No really, I am. The underground tastes will always get my respect.
Oh Vid you conversation provocateur you!
Quoted from Gryszzz:Oh Vid you conversation provocateur you!
I'm only doing it for my own benefit.
You guys do all the work finding me good new music, I supply the snarky comments.
And finally this song is just a thing of beauty. 30+years later and I still crank it whenever it comes on.
Late 90's pop. I remember hearing it on my Walkman while riding the bus to high school and never forgetting how all the sounds came together. I didn't even know the title or artist and took months to find it happenstance when a friend was playing the Sliding Doors soundtrack, that was a good day. Enjoy!
On My Own- Peach Union
1. Video Killed the Radio Star, Buggles
2. No Myth, Michael Penn
3. Short Skirt, Long Jacket, Cake
4. Call Me, Blondie
5. Chemistry, Semisonic
