Quoted from vid1900:

A perfect heavy metal album Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast.
My drummer give me this disc a few weeks before it came out and I was just blown away.

Piece of Mind for me, once Nicko joined it was off to the races!

You can't tell me that Invaders isn't a stinker..

I'm partial to Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime (if we go back to the late 80's). A rock opera with 15 tracks...

Quoted from vid1900:

Really??
I love the way the vocals drop on the last note of "In-Vade ----Ers"
But like my grandfather always said "To each his own, said the lady as she kissed her cow" (rough translation).

Haha that's the part that always comes to mind for me too. That's my least favorite song on that album - it does get in your head though, and specifically because of that part. But they added that song at the last minute in place of Total Eclipse, originally recorded for NOTB - and which is a better song IMO.

Quoted from vid1900:

We were driving past a little bar about 25 years ago, in the middle of nowhere and the sign out front said "David Allen Coe tonight".
I thought there is no way in hell that DAC is playing here???.
No cover when we walked in, but I found DAC sitting at the bar.
I asked if he was playing anything off the "undergound" album.
He laughed, and said "No. I mean you can probably go to jail for playing those songs nowadays!"
Since DAC has spent more of his life behind bars than on the outside, I believed him.
He played a good set, and seemed like a totally nice guy in person.

I VEHEMENTLY disagree with a lot of his anthropological views, but the guy does know how to write a good tune. That album he did with Pantera (for example) is a southern metal all you can eat buffet

Haha! I have that Haunted Mansion album on vinyl

Quoted from ZNET:

I nominate Odessey and Oracle by the Zombies (released in the USA in 1969), from the same time as Sgt. Pepper's and the same engineer at Apple Studios. The album ranks 100 on Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums of all time list. Not too shabby.
As the story goes, the album cover artist incorrectly spelled "Odyssey" as "Odessey" and because the band had already disbanded, the album was released absent the correction.
The Zombies are known for three hit songs, to wit: Time Of The Season, She's Not There, and Tell Her No. This album includes Time Of The Season. The other songs on the LP are every bit as good. I especially like A Butcher's Tale and Hung Up On A Dream. The lead singer, Colin Blunstone, possesses a distinctive voice, often described as breathy. His many solo albums are excellent. Some older pinsiders may remember the Zombies keyboardist and songwriter, Rod Argent, who enjoyed solo success of his own with his namesake band.
As a kid in the sixties and seventies, the Zombies were my favorite band. I saw the Zombies at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey about 15 years ago. Colin and Rod still had the mojo after all of these years. Front row!

Completely agree. I got into this band purely because of the name (I don't know what I thought - that they were a punk band maybe?) .. what a shocker when I heard "time of the season". What I heard was this ethereal, haunting sound... great vocal harmonies here, in the age of Ben E. King's Stand By Me

#479 6 years ago
Quoted from ghostbc:

True but kind of a one hit wonder as far as radio is concerned (on the east coast at least) and a cover. There original tunes are what never really got the notice I think it should have back then and now. I never thought of Boom boob out go the lights as controversial . I kind of took it as he was gonna fight the guy he found her with. I would say " Snortin Whisky Drinkin Cocaine " was a slight hit but was not played for long.

It's clearly about him hitting her; damn I never read those lyrics before. Yeah I can see why it wouldn't make it to radio

Quoted from Baiter:

Another one of my favorites... I first saw these guys in 1992, opening up for Metallica and Guns n Roses both in their prime... but it was the music of Body Count that I remembered most that the night. Their raw freshman effort has remained in my perpetual play list ever since.

Their latest album "Bloodlust" is even *better* than their first album. They phoned in the last couple, but this one is ALL IN. There's a song called "Why We Ride" that IMO should get a grammy. The whole record is awesome. Also check out "Ski Mask Way" and their cover of Raining Blood (I am not kidding)

Rust in Peace and Kill ‘Em All. These two pretty much thrash all these other albums into oblivion.

And The New Order.

Have to add Marillion's Misplaced Childhood, and Carcass' Surgical Steel

Quoted from Thermionic:

I listened to all of these over the past week or so, and remain certain all could easily be considered "perfect" (though that is subjective of course):
Looking (listening) at it to see if I still liked it,
I did:[quoted image]Great modern Prog:[quoted image]One of the best of the 80s:[quoted image]Haunting and mesmerizing, perfect swan song, and even the cover art is spot-on:[quoted image]Jazz is NOT dead, nor does it "smell funny":[quoted image]Among the best of the best of the best of all time:[quoted image]

HUGE thumbs up for the Spock's album! (although it is a bit generous to call The Light "modern" Neal's later albums are also really good when they don't get too preachy.

I'm checking out that "Artemis" record. Thanks!

#699 3 years ago
Quoted from Thermionic:

Yeah, I suppose “modern” is a stretch for something that was released 28 years ago, LOL!
I think the Transatlantic and Flying Colors albums are Neal’s best latter-day works. His solo stuff is nothing short of phenomenal in terms of musical achievement, but I feel the songwriting is a bit too literal and “easy” (if that makes sense); I’ve listened to classic albums like “Close to the Edge”, “Foxtrot”, “In the Land of Grey and Pink”, and “Octopus” scores of times, and the fact that I STILL haven’t fully penetrated and deciphered the lyrics is part of what keeps me coming back for more!
If you like the Beard, you will almost certainly dig Echolyn too. This one-song 50-minute masterpiece of an album also qualifies as “perfect”, just astonishingly good in every aspect and everything we love about Prog:

Totally agree re: Transatlantic / FC. amazing those 2 bands are able to keep it going after so long, and with the same guys AND with their crazy “main” bands schedules.

Will check out Echolyn; I’ve heard their name but haven’t dived in yet.

Very psyched for LTE3!

Quoted from darkpinball:

Clayman is awesome too!
Here's one underrated band with lots of great tracks.
Paradise Lost - Draconian Times

Every track on Draconian is a knockout. Even the piano intro to the album give you chills. The latest PL album “Obsidian” is the closest in style to DT in recent memory

#730 3 years ago
Quoted from Azmodeus:

Rust In Peace is a masterpiece.
I remember getting both the black album and rust in piece around the same exact time. I wanted the black album to be great, perhaps it is.
But rust in peace is a glaring speed metal tour de force. Possibly my favorite “speed metal”
Pretty big on peace sells too. Devils island...

I’d argue Peace Sells has increased in reputation since it was released - but RIP is a rimless classic. IMO far superior to the black album, which is great but can become tiresome. Never happened with RIP. Just jammed on Tornado of Souls and Lucretia last night. My hand is still cramped up from the Tornado solos!

#736 3 years ago
Quoted from Frippertron:

IQ- The Road of Bones. Fans of progressive rock/metal need to check this masterpiece out! Not a bad moment on the album.

My head just exploded. Amazing pick!!

Quoted from Dee-Bow:

they weren't for me.. but I love discovering new music.. I just finally listened to Joy Division for the first time and totally digging them.. never guessed they'd sound like they do
*do you listen to the band Into Eternity? that IQ reminded me of them..they are local and I'm friends with a few of the boys..

I am REALLY hoping Stu would do a couple guest spots now that Iced Earth has become a cluster. They were SO amazing live when he was with them. Haven't seen anything from them in person since 06(!) seeing them open for Symphony X and Epica. Hope Tim is doing well!

One of my all time favorites:

In previous years Id argue they SITA is a better album, but they are both perfect! Although IMO Slayer never wrote a better riff than the intro to Blood Red

Vivid by In Living Colour. Very good album.

Not perfect (see: Mother) but just about perfect.[quoted image]

LOL! I love that track, it is so out of place it makes the album. I -never- skip it. And Synchroncity II is just perfect.

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Well there's the movie soundtrack, and orchestral version, the terrible 1989 Live version, the 90s Broadway soundtrack that unfortunately made its way into a pinball machine...
My favorite version happens to be the Live at Leeds 1970 version. Was available only as a bootleg for a long time but got an official release a while back.

Ok, ok yeah, but BESIDES all that …

No one mentioned Operation: Mindcrime?

You guys should both be ashamed of yourselves!

That one has never clicked with me; I think it’s being forcefed it during the 90s when I was still devouring every thrash band I could find

#821 8 months ago
Quoted from Andy_B:

Alteady been mentioned but the early Alice Cooper stuff, particularly School's Out and Billion Dollar Babies. I have no idea how he got away with I Love The Dead
Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics. Heaviest band ever?
Judas Priest Unleashed in the East is pretty excellent although I believe the lyrics were re-recorded later so arguably a semi-live album.

Hahah “Unleashed in the Studio”, lots of overdubs on that record. Still great!

Quoted from hypnotoad:

Here's a few I don't think have been mentioned. It's a bit difficult to compare albums of different eras and genres so keep that in context.
Beck - Midnite Vultures
Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle
Chicago Transit Authority - Chicago Transit Authority
The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette
The Doors - L.A. Woman
Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow
John Coltrane - Blue Train
King Crimson - Discipline
Led Zeppelin - Presence
Ministry - Psalm 69
Muse - Will of the People (I have to pick one Muse)
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
Radiohead - Kid A (a few have already mention OK Computer which is great as well)
The Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed
Rush - Signals (others inlcuding myself may have pick another album but this one suited the time so well)
Sam Cooke - One Night Stand
Sigur Rós - Ágætis Byrjun
Sly and the Family Stone - Stand
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
Stray Cats - Built for Speed
Steevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble - Texas Flood
Talking Heads - Remain in the Light
Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog
Tool - Aenima
Trentmoller - The Last Resort
The Yardbirds - Yardbirds '68
Yes - Fragile

This is a great list. There's a couple records on here I despise LOL

#857 19 days ago
Quoted from hypnotoad:

I figured there were more than a couple polarizing entries. I have pretty diverse taste in music and my taste has changed quite a bit over the years. I could have included a bunch of really obscure stuff I love but I kept the list fairly simple.
It's funny how passionate people can be about their favorite music. It is my disliking it is passing judgment on them.
I'm always trying to keep my ears open for new music so these kind of lists are great.

I looked again and I guess it was just 1 record: KiD A. I found over the years that I really really REALLY don’t like Radiohead

I’d quibble about some of the specific choices. Will of the People? Not Black Clouds or Absolution?

Since I’ve been listening to it again this week:
Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory

#861 18 days ago
Quoted from hypnotoad:

I specifically avoid Black Holes and Absolution because I was pretty sure someone would have already mentioned them. I like all the Muse releases so it is hard for me to pick a favorite. Will of the People has a little bit of everything and works together really well.
I love Dream Theater as well but prefer their instrumental pieces.

Oh a James LaBrie hater huh? (just kidding). I'm going to go check out Will of the People again, and I haven't had Blue Train on in a long time - only way to listen to that is on vinyl!
