Just got the scans for GI's cabinet art.
They are all screwed as usual, so I will try my best and put the progress here
This is what I got:

First step. Chop off the background from the art:

Next step is to isolate the black color.

People laugh at me, but seriously, I firkin love this game sooooooo much. Will be pried from my dead hands. Love the topper, doing any more? Also interested in new decals too!

#5 4 years ago

I just picked up a Gilligans island this weekend at the Allentown show, It's a fun pin, really underrated
in my opinion. I would really be interested in some decals too, mine are pretty faded

#6 4 years ago

I got a very faded GI on one of the sides, the other side looks very good.
The only problem is that it is missing the motor (got to get a new one...)
And some massive wear on the treasure chest.
The pinball has been in this guys home for 14 years without any cleaning.
And the funny thing, he never had the motor!
Would love to install some new decals on it eventually.

I hope someone actually makes these and pull's it off correctly. I remember Herb Silvers "reproduced" a short run of like five sets a few years ago and I was so excited since I'd been looking for a like new set for about a dozen years or more. We'll after looking at the online pictures of them they weren't no different then what you'd see on a faded out game. I emailed Herb about it and never got a response, which I found very strange and was very disappointed. Fast forward to about 1.5 years ago and I found a HUO game on CL with the most beautiful unfaded cabinet I'd ever seen. I asked the owner for more cabinet pictures (since I didn't care what the rest of the game looked like) and also asked if the cabinet had been touched up with a sharpie at all......?? He had no idea what I was talking about (not a collector) but the extra pictures he sent were blowing me away and I couldn't get there fast enough. Needless to say I paid his price and got the game out as fast as possible. A very nice game and I'm glad I pulled the trigger on it as fast as I did, otherwise I would have still been looking for a nicer replacement for the faded out game/cabinet that I had owned for years. Now this one is never leaving, great game.

Next step: The colors and the gradients

#9 4 years ago

One of the games on my wish list, and a keeper. Wish they were easier to find!

#10 4 years ago

The dots over the "i" 's should be red as well.

Excellent work.

All colors are separated. And all gradients are done:

Do you vectorize the images in the end or you use bitmaps?

#22 4 years ago

Image restoring has nothing to do with the image's format. In the end it's for printing, so as long as the image is good it could be jpeg, bitmap, vector or whatever.
Everyone uses their own technique and it's own tools to do it.

Anyway, I never vectorize nothing in the end because it doesn't do any better. The auto vectorizing techniques suck anyway.

#23 4 years ago

Which is why we Draw everything and don't do Auto-Tracing....Raster artwork sucks, Vector is the only way to do it right.....just look at how bad Stern Cabinet artwork is!

Maybe that's because the printing method sucks? I doubt if the file sent to the printer has that crappy quality

#25 4 years ago

i agree. That is not hi def printing by any means. I think it's lost in the printing process, not the art process.

Great work!

I hope you are allowed to help other people with this before any copyright police come.
Nothing to see here move along.jpg

#34 4 years ago

Great work.

Assuming you're using Illustrator, how do you do the gradients without drawing every single dot individually? This has stopped me from many artwork restores in the past.

If he only makes a single set for himself and nobody else he has nothing to worry about

#36 4 years ago

Agreed, but I know tons of people need the graphics, and I was just stating I hope he can share.

It would be nice if they were picked up. Gilligans has been on my want list for a while, but have passed before due to extremely faded/worn cabs and/or bad playfields.

The front was really trashed. Had to do a lot of drawing from scratch to pull this off, but the black color is done:

(sorry, forgot to answer your question previously)

On these kind of jobs I don't use illustrator because much of the art is used directly from the scan, with some tweeks and filters in photoshop.

Drawing something like this from scratch in illustrator is such a massive work that you might well buy a GI nib. (yes, I value my precious time ).
In the end your eyes won't even see the difference on the print. Because unless you spend a ton of money on some mega quality print, the results will be the same.
The trick is to know what happens to the art you are seeing on the monitor compared to the one you will see on the print. If you don't have this knowledge you will waste hours and hours on details that no one will see.

About the gradients, there are filters for it. Illustrator does them too, but it's way harder to get them right. I use photoshop for it.
