My buddy just dropped off a pin to be shopped out. The first thing i notice is that half the GI is out. Yep, j6 is toasty. Do you think this is repairable or is it time for a new board?

Very repairable.

#3 10 years ago

Yep, no problem repairing.

Make sure you replace the female connector too, even if it somehow looks good.

Cool, thanks guys. I dove in head first. I have the connector off. All traces are good exept one. You can see the bad one lifting in the pic. Should i throw some solder on it? The original solder is burnt off and doesnt go around the pin hole like the others do.

Female connector is also wasted.....

Is there a trace on that side of the board, or just a pad?

I kinda figured that would be the case, lol.

Vid1900. The trace ends where you see it on top of the screwdriver blade. There is nothing on the oppisite side. I can only get a buzz from my MM when i touch the piece sticking up so basically a pin will not touch the trace when its in the hole..... im entering uncharted territory with my board repair skills.

The bottom side. Screwdriver points to bad hole.

You can re-make the connection with a wire on the backside of the board.

This will look cleaner and give you something solid to solder to.

Use a thick piece of wire, there is a lot of current running though those traces.

Heh, went through a very similar issue with a new-to-us Elvira and the Party Monsters...

I just rebuilt the trace with a 16 gauge jumper and she was good as new.

#12 10 years ago

Yeah, Williams GI connectors were always junk.

Poorly designed, year after year.

#13 10 years ago

Ok... looks like ill need to do my first jumper wire. Any helpful tips would be great. Or pics of said repair would be awsome! Thanks!

#14 10 years ago

Use solid wire 18-20 gauge..route the wire flat against board and neatly around other components.

#15 10 years ago

Ok. Thanks everybody. Before i go and get crazy ill post some pics of my plan of attack..

Ok... 18-20 guage wire. Circled in red are the connections that buzz with the MM. Im thinking of running the jumper wire as shown. Does this look like a good place to do the jump? Ive cracked open a few pops so it will have to wait until sunday afternoon, just plannin ahead i guess..

Did a little more poking around with the MM. I found another spot where i think i could do the jump. Im thinking i should jump it to B. To the experts out there, what do you think? And also, thanks for all of the help so far!

I can't see where the trace goes to, but use the shortest most direct route. the key is restoring the circuit that was damaged, as long as it's restored it does not matter which point you connected it.

#20 10 years ago

Don't get fancy.

If this is your first repair, put the wire exactly where the trace used to run to.

#21 10 years ago

I did one of these on my hurricane GI. trace was back from pin added a jumper wire. leave some play( length) in the wire does not have to be tight this will make it easy to work on. be sure to use new pin and new conector. GL.

Parts came in today and i think ive fixed the board!!! I also did my first jumper wire and it went pretty smooth. Gonna put it all together and fire it up. Keep your fingers crossed!

If it fires up, congrats!!!!!!

#24 10 years ago

Yep hopefully it works and not fires up!

#25 10 years ago

GL on a smoke and fire free fire-up!

Sweet success!!! All gi works. Thanks for the help, im going to need some more. Im having another issue. When i start up the pin it doesnt boot. It makes the all good tone then does nothing. I press the advance button and get it into diagnose mode then it acts normal, plays etc. Turn it off and the same thing happens again. Hopefully i make sense.Thoughts???

Is there credits in the game, or is it set to free play?

#28 10 years ago

Yes there are credits. Its weird. Its almost like it starts in diagnose mode when turned on. It doesnt go into attract mode until i press the advance buttons on the coin door and get it out of the diagnose mode. Then it starts attract mode , acts normal, plays games etc... strange.

Might want to check the batteries for corrosion. My es did something similar. Dead battery corrosion ended up being the issue.

Yep it's losing the settings...check batteries, next google pinball remote battery holder.
