I personally focus on starting modes the entire game. The right ladder leading up to Stay Puft can be very valuable. Plus, when you complete it, you get a four ball "We Came, We Saw, We Kicked Its..." multiball. Skill shot makes it easier to get modes, with the added bonus of limiting shots to the dangerous GHOST/Slimer targets.
Multipliers seem to just happen naturally to me during the course of the game. Usually Tobin's Spirit Guide awards some. I think hold bonus is in there. Only risk there is to Tobin's is potentially starting Scoleri Brothers.
