I believe the early bally sound boards use the encoded solenoid signals to pick a specific sound. It shouldn't be too terribly hard to use the MPU signals that go to the Sound board.

There is an enable signal that is either high / low(forget which state) and than the four encoded solenoid lines. Small board with a 4 to 16 decoder and use the decoders 16 outputs to trigger some kind of sound device.
