I’m not sure many blank playfields were sent. I think most were populated swaps if I am not mistaken.
The lip that those catch on to stay up is delicate and tricky. I bet it's just been worn enough to not be reliable. I'd try replacing it

EDIT: I made the swap and the problem follows the drop target. I see the locking lips for the drop target but they look OK. I'm going to have to pull the drop assembly and get it on the bench.
I'll be back with either more problems or with the solution.
A buddy of mine was having a similar problem with the drops on Deadpool, wracked his brain for a while then stumbled on this service bulletin for World Poker tour. This fixed his deadpool drops. Might be helpful with this issue too. check it out:

IMO risky to do with the game on, if you accidentally short anything all the smoke will come out and the game will be dead. My suggestion is always work on games with the power off.

Yep, even the smallest thing can go bad quickly. That little battery pops out of your fingers and lands on a board and you woulda wished you had turned the power off pretty quickly.

The only reason I bring it up, b/c in 2017 the topper only worked in attract mode and when the etco1 was on the DMD... boring as hell. It was a lot of money to spend on a topper back then and only see it work every so often, but they made it do more since the latest updates.

The white one with the GB sticker on the front, not the standard black one.
I tried to make a knock off using a kiss knob and bought a poofy sticker. It’s just not the same. I want an original.

100% agree. My GB came with a LED and I replaced it with LCD as quickly as I could. So so much better
