Removing the playfield from the cabinet is the only real option. The games of that era only pivot. It makes for a real pain when trying to work anywhere on the back half of the playfield. Even if you drop something or try to get in the back corners of the cabinet its awful. The playfield wiring can stay connected as long as you stay close to the game. If you don't have a rotisserie, some saw horses could work. Just don't rest it on any moving parts or wiring for obvious reasons...
