My shooter lane ball launch coil assembly doesn't look right. It has a stack of washers under the coil bracket. Typically, the coil bracket is mounted inside the notched pocket that has been cut out of the playfield top.

On my Getaway, the bracket is larger than the notched pocket, so it's not screwed down flush with the bottom of the notched pocket. As stated above, the bracket has a stack of washers under it, so that when it's mounted to the PF, the bottom of the coil bracket is flush w/ the top op the PF, instead of flush against the notched pocket.

Is this correct?

Thanks Lloyd...

I didn't think it was.

That looks strange. Howeer, you showed me yours, so I'll show you mine.

And from a lower angle. Your playfield seems to be routed out where mine isn't for that bracket.

DaveH,

Your PF looks like it doesn't have the notched pocket.

Is that correct?

Dave,

Can you take a picture looking straight down on the shooter lane, showing the coil from above?

I'm just wondering if maybe my playfield was an early run or something.

#8 8 years ago

My guess is I have an early production PF.

The routed pocket is stock.

There is no evidence of this, or any other bracket, being mounted in any other position.

It looks like I have the wrong bell armature as well.

The manuals calls for this part...

Here it is from the top.

The mounting position looks to be the same as mine....with the front of the coil bracket up against the the cut-out for the shooter lane.

I guess I'll have to live w/ the shimmed mounting technique.

Now I just need to find the correct bell armature.

(it's always something)....LOL

Thanks for the help Dave.

Happy to help. I was just working on 4 Square in the same room, so it was easy to yank the apron.

#13 8 years ago

Once again...thanks a bunch...

I found the correct bell armature.

Had to order it from UK...pinball heaven.

At least SOMEONE has the part.

For clarity, The Getaway came with 2 different shooter mechs depending on production date. Earliest production had a smaller shooter coil bracket, this was changed pretty quickly to the larger flipper coil sized shooter mech along with a small driver board under the playfield.

Your game might be an early production with the shooter swapped out, or you might have a later production game where someone swapped in an early playfield.

I see in Dave's pic...his playfield is stamped July 29

Mine looks to be dated Feb 18th or 19th.

According to IPDB...Getaway came out in Feb of that year.

I must have an early PF w/ the later coil assembly installed.

Is there any documentation showing the earlier style coil assembly?

The playfield brackets line up w/ the 2 slotted mounting holes, just like in Dave's pic.

Mine has 2 added wood screws though.

According to the description on IPDB....I have a later run playfield....which seems odd.

My guess is....my playfield blank was an early run PF...but the artwork that was applied is the later run version.

My PF also has the "diamond plate" logo applied.

Here is a picture of an early production playfield. This game also had the early production front coin door decals and had a hinged playfield instead of the playfield sliders.

I just looked at another used playfield I have in my stash and it looks exactly like yours. Has the notched our area but was fit with the larger shooter coil mech.

This particular game and playfield did not have the prototype differences in the artwork on the pf.

#20 8 years ago

Mine is the same as yours right down to the stack of 3 washer under each screw.

PF manufacture date of the one in my stash was Feb 25th.

Thanks for the help guy...

I also have the smaller coil in my Getaway. Does anyone know the best way to upgrade to the larger coil?

Things I'm concerned about...

- do you need the extra driver board kbliznick mentioned
- Is a different bracket and armature needed
- I think you might need to cut out the playfield more to fit the different bracket

#24 8 years ago

From looking at the pics...I'd say you'd need to order all new components in order to "upgrade" to the larger coil. The smaller coil bracket looks completely different than the larger coil bracket assembly. My guess is, a new bell armature will be needed as well.

Not sure about the extra driver board.

I wouldn't cut the PF...My coil assembly is NOT resting inside the routed pocket...it is sitting above it, (the bottom of the coil bracket is flush, (against) the TOP PF surface).

-yes, the board is just a TIP 36 transistor, diode, resistor and heat sink.
-yes
-no, the larger bracket needs to be flush on the top surface of the pf, thus the washers to take up the extra space

To wire up the driver board you take the 2 wires that normally go to the coil, and you need add a third wire that is run to ground.
