As the title says, I just powered on my Getaway HSII to kill a bit of time and noticed that the play field GI is entirely not working out of the blue. I am a technical novice with pins and only just recently required my two machines, but this has me kind of stumped.

I replaced the main fuse, and had a look over the underside of the play field and everything seems to be in order.

I apologize in advance if I am speaking like a complete newbie, but truthfully I am.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of where to look for the problem?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Look at connectors j120 and 121 on the big driver board.

Are they brown at all?

Start there...wiggle those connectors and see if lights flicker..

Check the GI fuses. F106-F110 on the power driver board. If it was the main fuse nothing would work and check your connectors as tomdot says.

Thanks you both. I'll go have a look now.

Silly question, but are all of the fuses on the driver board the same type? If it's possible for me to the wrong thing in the wrong place it's guaranteed I will.

Thanks again!

Look in ur manual or download one from ipdb.org

There is a simple fuse list chart in there.

Look on page 1-40 of the manual for fuse types and locations. They're all 5 amp slo-blo. I'm betting tomdot is right though and it's the connector.. would make more sense since ALL the GI went out at once..

I just happen to have this manual sitting on my computer desk tonight..

Thanks tom. I looked at the manual but I have some reading comprehension issues when it comes to electronics/schematics/technical manuals and I think I probably just glossed over it.

I will try all of your suggestions now and report back.

Sorry for the hassle and thanks for your understanding.

Will do. I'll go and check everything you guys suggested and let you know how it worked out.

Again, thanks to you both for the immediate responses!

We all had to start somewhere, don't worry about it.

You guys are awesome!!

Sure enough, applying pressure to the j120-121 connectors brought the GI back to life. I did notice that a little nudge would also cause the GI to turn off too, so would that be indicative of a bigger connection/cleaning issue? The reason I ask is that this particular machine was, almost certainly, originally located in a smoking-allowed facility, or a coal mine, as the black sludge I cleaned off of the underside of the play field lights was ridiculous.

Should I be investigating how to give the machine a good, proper, thorough cleaning of the electronics? There are other gremlins too that I need to address like the cabinet-top red light/motor not working, and the green light not lighting up on the traffic light, but maybe a good thorough cleaning will help determine what is actually mechanical issues, and what is just dirty electronics? (As I type that, it seams obvious that I should do that anyways...)

In any case, you guys have helped stabilize my blood pressure for the evening, and it's very much appreciated! Cheers!

Is that connector brown or burnt at all? If so, need new header pins and connector. (Common with GI connectors)

#13 11 years ago

You will most likely have to replace one or both of those connectors and the male pins on the board. VERY common issue, and easier than it sounds...

Did u replace the bulb already for the stoplight? Probably just a bad solder connection or wire or bad bulb...

Oh u really need to get the topper working, it's awesome!! But maybe concentrate on ur other problems first...

That topper is cool, esp at night in my garage with door open. People walking by are like wtf??

I think so actually. Hard for me to tell at night since the space I have it in is lit entirely by black lights and neon, tomorrow I'll put white bulbs in and give it a good going over. I'm guessing that there likely will be some work needed though as it's been a little "upitty" since I had it delivered with various minor issues. Even after I tweaked the j120-121 connectors it's now telling me that there are no pinballs in the machine (and yes, I did put them back in after I put the play field back down. )

I foresee a little elbow grease and beer sipping in my immediate future...

Noted and noted. I will make a concerted effort in the coming days to address the issues and will likely be turning here for occasional guidance along the road.

It's a real comfort to know that you guys are here and willing to help!

Thanks again, seriously. Next time you're in my neck of the woods the cold beer is on me. That goes for you both. Cheers!

It teased me one night and came on for a few blissful seconds and then disappeared just as quickly as it came. *shakes fists at the sky*

I've got one I'm shopping out in a few weeks. Bit rough right now but good if you need a reference on something. Just ask. Always glad to help.

VERY much appreciated, and I'll likely take you up on that.

...and Spartacus, Old Loves Die Hard, and Pompeii. 4 stellar albums.

Illusions was my first CD import though. Rock on!

Was thinking more of a tetrarchy but now that you're here Chris we'll have us a quadrumvirate and call it a day.
