This project will be done over the course of....how ever long it takes. The plan is to do a complete tear down. Cabinet repair with new decals. Tear down PF and clear coat. Re-assemble with mods that are available. Hoping to get the new CPR backglass - we shall see. I'll post pics of what gets done. I'll start with some tear down pics.

Just went through it. I'm debating on doing powdercoating or chrome on it. Too early to decide. I like the red you did, but wonder if it would be better with coin door being red too?

#6 6 years ago

Did some more gutting today. Should have the cab completely gutted tomorrow. Then on to cab repair.

Removed the decals. I used a torch and scrapper. Not a recommended method, but since the entire cabinet is being redone it will be fine. For those that plan to do the same thing. I would use a respirator and make sure you are outside or in a well ventilated area. You are burning glue fucks sake!

Used the Citristrip. Bottle says 30mins - 24hrs for it to set and work. For this glue you will be doing it overnight for sure. After the scrapping I sanded with 120 grit, and up to 240 grit. Coin door and right side are done. The pics are out of order on here...

Here are some before pics of the cabinet. The usual leg dents, but some damage on the left side rail occurred when removing the rails.

I ordered my new decals. Not sure how long it will take to get them, but that gives me time to paint the inside and get her all cleaned and prep'd. Here are some pics of the process so far on getting things filled and smoothed out. This cab had most of its damage around the leg region (what machine doesnt?) Not to mention the big hit that the cab took when removing the side rails on the left side. Was wondering on what is the best method on reducing any possible damage from legs in the future with protection of sorts?

I got a week at least before my decals are here. So it should be good. Thanks for the info.

#17 6 years ago

Like most do. I have painted the perimeter black just in case the decals don't cover all the wood. Clear has also been applied. Will let it cure for a couple days then I'll give it a little sanding with high grit. Decals will hopefully be here by the end of the week. Anyone order these decals from retro refurbs before?

I have also decided to powder coat the exterior portions. Gonna see about matching the red on the decals as close as possible. Or just going with candy apple red.

Put the new sliders on. I have also placed metal 'L" brackets on the bottom. This will keep the wood from being damaged by direct contact with floor when breaking the machine down for shows and stuff. Thought about getting some plastic brackets if that would be better? Thoughts?

Still waiting on decals, but I went ahead and got the items sent off to powdercoating. Some do the apron and some dont. I'm doing mine due to fading and some scuffs. Items sent off include:

legs
side rails
lock down bar
locking mech that lock down bar connect to
cabinet hinges to backbox
coin door
worm rails from PF
apron

What powder did I choose? Wait and see. Should be great.

Got the powercoated items back. Came out great, but I'm still waiting to get them on the machine before I give my final verdict. My other parts should be here tomorrow. Also, have started getting all the cabinet bolts cleaned up, and cleared.

I run all my peripherals off of an arcade PSU. (It's a preference for multiple good reasons) So with that installed I started installing the mods.

Flipper buttons
Flash topper
Cabinet glow kit

I also do a clear over the red topper to get rid of the micro scratches.
Re-wired the topper due to faulty wiring from previous owner(s).
Assembled coin door and got all mechs cleaned.
Cleaned and reassembled the shifter.

The cabinet is almost complete. Then I will move onto board repair and upgrading portions of those.

Been working on it, but haven't posted anything. Sorry. I have gone over the boards. Gonna need to replace the GI connector on the driver board. Rebuild a couple traces too. Also replacing the bridge rectifiers driver board, and the caps on the DMD controller board. Playfield has been stripped and moderately cleaned. Removed all inserts due to some being damaged and/or lifting. Ordered all new transparent inserts with the insert decals too. That will give me more options on LED's down the road. Only a couple areas on the PF that will require some touch ups. Found many broken components throughout under the PF. Not sure how the pop bumpers were even working...

Just an update. I got shorted on my inserts. So the supplier sent the remaining ones to me. I didn't want to start putting the new ones in until I made sure I had all that I require. Fixing to start sanding the inserts and getting them glued in place.

Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:

I am loving your restoration. Quick question, is the red beacon lamp cover new or restored? If restored, how did you getting looking so good? Mine has some scratches, and would love to be able to clean it up.

I restored it. Wet sand it like superbee said. You can polish it or you can clear spray it afterwards like I did.

#51 6 years ago

Update: Working on PF prep. Making sure all my inserts are leveled. Sanding. The first coat of clear will hopefully be shot this weekend. I'm always nervous about the first coat. Cause if something is wrong before that is done it will cause issues the rest of the time. I'm triple checking everything. I'm thinking of doing a video on how I make a "kill room" on a budget. lol.

Update: First coat of clear will be going on the PF shortly...

#55 6 years ago

Well, the first shoot went as somewhat expected. The inserts are gonna be a task after the curing process is complete. Now I play the waiting game. Here are a couple pics directly after the first shoot. I have had to fill in around all the inserts with an eye dropper.(overfilled to be sure)

Quoted from MustangPaul:

Nice vid. Hope the wind isn't coming from the direction of your garage door. I take it you open the door to the house to get airflow into the garage.

Little to no wind that day. I have two doors that feed air from my house to the garage too. One portion of the video I had the blower fan going from inside the house. You can probably hear differences in the sound here and there due to it. I had to clear while my youngest was down for a nap. Otherwise she would be doing god knows what to everything.

#62 6 years ago

Thanks. Still doing a little sanding every day. Gonna hunker down on it this weekend.

#63 6 years ago

Update: Playfield has been sanded flat after the first coat of clear. Been tasking due to the new inserts. I'm working on the new insert decals. So far so good. They are going on easy enough. Tomorrow I plan to start masking and doing the little touch ups needed. Probably going to shoot the next coat of clear next weekend. I'll post some pics tomorrow. My phone died.

During and after of insert decals. I must say. So far I'm pleased with these from "classic arcades". They are thick though. So, when my next coats are applied that is something I will keep in mind.

Touch ups have begun!

Matching grey is a pain! Luckily this area is pretty close to not visible unless you are really looking underneath stuff. Even if you were to do that it's not gonna be easy to tell the difference. I have a before pic on here during the disassembly. I sanded down the rippled section. I find that if you are going to be off on your color then you are gonna be better off covering a bigger area.

The next area for touch ups is due to a previous owner installing a damn post where one doesn't belong! I have no idea what the point of it was either. Once again, grey...

So, instead of just touching up the little spot I will be doing the entire section of this road. The base is down and then I'll be adding the black tomorrow.

Oh crap. Any way you could double them up?

That was my first thought. These decals are from classic arcades via ebay. If I were to double stack them I think they would protrude too high. They are thick. Not sure how double stacking would take with the next couple coats of clear either.

#77 6 years ago

I have contacted classic arcades. Waiting to hear back now. Hopefully my experience is better than a buddy of mine.

Touch ups continue...

There is suppose to be a post there. It makes the loop shot a more challenging but can be removed.

Holy Shit! You are right! Took some digging to find some pics of that area. All photos are from up and above where that spot is covered. When I got the machine all that was there was a hole. So, I just assumed that someone drilled a hole. Thanks for the input. Luckily that can be fixed still. I'll put a post there.

lol. It's funny that this got a bump today. Because I planned on giving a much needed update...

So. Shortly after my first coat of clear over the insert decals on the playfield I had a large issue. I can only assume the clear I used was too hot and had a negative affect on the insert decals. They fogged up and began to off gas into the clear. Looked horrible. Very depressing. So, I had to sand it all off and remove the decals..

After I removed the decals I fell into a state of "don't want to look at it". lol. Then when I started to get back into it. The weather changed and it started to get colder outside. I'm not going to clear when its cold. So, I put the PF to the side and worked on other projects. I got a Ms. Pac restored during that time...

So. During the down time. Going to Texas Pinfest too. I realized I'm gonna have to step it up if I want this game ready for next year. I have decided that I will be doing a clearcoat on the cabinet in the future. It just looks so pretty. Not to mention with my kids being so small I could use the extra protection. lol. Along with that I purchased another Getaway. Mainly for the possibility of getting a good PF to work with.

I tore it all down and cleaned it all up. There are a few areas that will need to be addressed, but I feel like the PF that I need to finish is my first one. Granted, the inserts being changed was more stressful than intended. But I will be working on both simultaneously.

I dusted off the first PF and began some more sanding. I don't think i can sand anymore without taking a chance at messing up artwork. So, I finished sanding and I have started touch ups. I began with the left sling. Then the sling on the right looked 'off' so I touched up the right sling. Now every other white area looks off. So, I'm redoing all the white areas now. The more I do in this hobby the more I realize how short on tools I am. lol. My current airbrush was horrible to work with. I have ordered a new one and should be arriving today.

This is where I'm at now. I apologize for the absence guys. Thanks to those that follow this and give input.

So, I started cleaning up all the holes and switch areas. Then got the air compressor out to blow off all the dried up sludge from sanding. Doing that I found a loose decal that didn't make it. So, I need to print another decal. Otherwise I would be clearing the PF again right now. So, I have ordered more decal paper to print more decals. The waiting game on PF#1. I guess I can start touch ups on the donor PF.

Got my new decal paper in the mail today. Printed off new decals for the original and donor PF. Got them set and getting things cleaned and setup for tomorrow. Hopefully I can get them cleared again. This is a moment of truth here guys. I have to apply mist coats and let them set for about 10 mins each - layer by layer until the inserts are covered. Hopefully they stay down and I'm not back to where I was last year.

#114 5 years ago

Went and saw Avengers today. That was priority, lol. Then when the temperature dropped down to where I wanted it - I cleared the PFs. When it comes to the donor PF all I did was give it a few medium coats to lock in all the touch ups. Nothing more to show or talk about on that PF. Now, for the original PF I had to take my time. I started with a mist coat over the PF. Basically making it look like little mini droplets all over the place. Waited 5+mins and did another mist coat. The droplets began to merge with the previous ones. Waited another 5+ mins. Then gave the PF a thin coat. Waited 5+ mins. Gave it a regular coating. Waited 5+ mins. Then gave it another. Finished it up with a nice thick coating on top. During this entire process I monitored the decals to make sure no lifting occurred. So far so good. Here are pics. This is now 4 hours after shooting. If you see weird stuff in the clear or on the PF - it's just the reflection of the kill room around it. The pics were even making me run back into the garage to make sure something wasn't wrong, lol. Let's see how it does overnight now...

So, I have been checking on the clearcoat job every 12hrs. As of this morning we have an anomaly. Looks like gas bubbles. Not on all the decals, but less than 5 I would say. This "2X RPM" is the worst of them. I'm not completely pissed because these were meant to be covered in the end anyways, they are just suppose to help with the lack of opacity in the text. By stacking the decals it should help. I have sanded down the PF and will attempt to stack the classic arcade decals on top of the waterslides (coat of clear between them). Before doing that I am performing tests to see how these decals react to the clear this time around. With this set you get a couple extra decals that aren't used so I'm using these for testing. Using the bottom PF section where the apron rests I'm placing a decal and brushing clear on it. The first test seemed to be going good, but I was playing the guessing game with clear and hardener ratio. I don't think it was right because it never hardened and the decal began to wrinkle. Scraped it off and now have a new method and test going. This time around I know I have at least 50/50 ratio for hardener and clear. I have done a single brush over the decal and I will let it sit overnight. Then tomorrow I will apply another coat over it. If this test proves to work then I will be applying the decals and brushing a thin layer of clear over each one day by day til they are covered well enough for a complete spray. All theories right now.

Okay, test #2 is a failure as well. Decal was wrinkled up. Meaning the brush technique is applying too much at one time. So, my next step will be to apply all decals and then mist coat application day by day. That journey will begin tomorrow.

Quoted from Coyote:

An honest question..
With all this time, and trouble you're having with the playfield, from clearing to insert decals, wouldn't it be easier/quicker to just get a repro playfield and drop it in?
Edit to add: I can't do any of this PF work you're doing, and that I've seen other folks do. So I woulda gotta a repro right off the bat. But now, after seeing you having to do multiple clears and wood work and patches and such.. when do you wipe your hands and say, 'Hey, y'know.. just get a new PF..'?

lmao. You think that hasn't crossed my mind?! At this point its the principle of that matter. Not to mention if everything goes well I will have the only Getaway with clear inserts. Now if its worth it - that is yet to be determined. I feel with every fail - I learn something. Which only makes my skills better down the road. Without a doubt there are a majority of people that would have said "F$&# it!" This is why I'm working on two PFs. Just so I have something else to fall back on. Both are looking better and better after every task. If there is anything I have learned doing pinball related restores - its patients.

#124 5 years ago

I would like to think that not only am I learning from this restore - but others are learning what to do/not to do. lol.

Did some clear this weekend. Started with a mist coat on the original PF. Within 5 mins my worst fear began to take affect. I began to see air bubbles forming in certain inserts. I quickly ran to my tools and got a syringe. Poked holes into the decals to allow air to escape before things got worse.

Here are some pics of right after the mist coat with help from the syringe...

20180504_214011 (resized).jpg20180504_214011 (resized).jpg

The next day I saw that the PF had subsided and was looking solid. No air bubbles. So I applied another mist coat. 2hrs later I did another. Then 2hrs later I did another. I want to say that I did around 4 or 5 coats. Going to let it stay til around Wednesday. This should lock these inserts in place and I may even be able to apply some wet coats after a little bit of sanding for grip. Here is where I'm at now....

Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:

Keep up the nice work. Did you figure out your bubbling issues?

Dude, its been a battle. The decals don't like the clear for some reason. I believe the light is at the end of the tunnel. All is covered. Just put another wet coat on actually. Building up the top coats so I have room to sand down and not hit a decal. The classic arcade decals are thicker than the water slides. So I have to apply more clear to completely cover them. Then have even more built up so I can sand flat.

Was going to apply the final coat of clear tonight, but I realized I was out of lacquer thinner. So I'll have to get that tomorrow and hopefully be ready to go.

Just a quick update before I head off to bed. I got the PF sanded and did a little polish on it. So far it looks great. I'll get it out of the kill room and on the rotisserie tomorrow and get some better pics. I'm curious to see the underside condition of the PF. It has been nailed to the support cabinet for many months now. Not sure how much sludge I'm bound to clean up.

Here you go. This is just with Novus 2. Going to let it set and complete curing for the next few weeks.

Update. Too damn hot in the garage to work on this thing. Also, im more than likely going to have to sand down passed the classic arcade decals. Going to end up double stacking the waterslides. The classic arcades seem to be lifting in certain areas.

Thought I would give those that are still following this restoration an update!

Well, the summer was too hot for me to work on this. About a week after my last post the playfield began to show negative signs from the classic arcade decals. I have given up hope on the classics and will have to once again sand down the PF to at least passed the classics and either go with a vinyl print or another layer of waterslides. I began sanding last week and my compressor passed away. Very upsetting. Working on getting a replacement. Will post again when something changes. Thanks, guys.

Okay, I have sanded down the PF once again. Only I'm not having to start all over. I have only sanded down to where I can remove the classic arcade decals that went south on me. So, the plan is to stack another layer of water slide insert decals down. Then clear again - HOPEFULLY FOR THE LAST TIME! Not only that, but I will be removing everything from under the PF. This will make it much easier to work with - especially when lining up the inserts on top of each other using a light. I also have an idea on something that I want to do that I don't think has been done before. We shall see. Here are some pics of the current status. Thanks for hanging in there, guys.

3 and 1/2 hours to remove and swap the backside of this game. Even though the PF that I just swapped to is exceptional and many would love to use it - I'm still going to try my "one of a kind". Next step is to clean this baby up!

Got more water slides photoshopped and printed. Here are some before and after pics showing the opacity difference.

As of right now, not really. Been on hold for a various amount of reason - but this game WILL see the light of day again. Other projects and jobs keep getting in the way.

Update. I have thrown up the white flag on this one of a kind Playfield. Although this PF would be great for a lot of people - it isn't up to my standards for the amount of effort I have put into it. So, I'm going to plan B on this one. I hope to give you guys more info by xmas. I will probably make a youtube video to put on my channel about this whole restoration. Stay tuned!
