Question: What common pinball feature used in the original High Speed was obviously and disappointedly left off of Getaway: High Speed II?
Answer: If you said "spinner" then your a winner.
There's nothing quite like the feel of ripping a spinner, I've always been disappointed that The Getaway didn't have one . . . until now, that is. I was recently challenged to see if I could figure out a way to incorporate a scoring spinner into Getaway. It took me some time and I almost gave up, but I finally figured it out.
There is literally only one spot in this game that provides room for a spinner, and even this requires that a notch be cut out of the large lower left plastic for the switch assembly to fit (I have a used one on order, and when I receive it I'll cut out the required notch and post install pics). Also, it doesn't just spin, but it also scores. I've attached the spinner switch in parallel to the left orbit switch just above it. This way the spinner scores a few points each revolution without overly impacting the overall score.
I'm thinking about selling the spinner as a "ready-to-install" kit for $75 if there is enough interest for me to do so (I'd probably want at least 10 orders). I would classify this as a medium skill level mod which requires the ability to cut a piece out of your existing plastic (or buy a spare one like I am and cut the notch out of it), soldering two wires to the leads of an existing switch, and drilling two small holes (if you want something more secure than just tape) into the playfield (hidden under a plastic) to screw down the spinner bracket.
My kit would include the following:
- The spinner with bracket and switch
- The wiring already solder to the switch long enough reach the loop switch you will solder to (I'll pre-tin the ends of the wires)
- Mounting tape to hold the spinner in place
- Screws to mount the bracket more permanently
- Decals for the front and back of the spinner (I would be open to custom requests)
- A paper template for cutting the notch out of your plastic so the bracket and switch will fit with the plastic installed
I'm not ready to take orders yet, as I'm just gauging interest and want to get my donor plastic so that I can actually cut out the notch myself and complete the mod 100% on my pin. However, I would like to gauge interest so please comment if you would be willing to commit to this mod when I decide to offer it. When I do make the mod available, I will do these in batches/runs based off paid orders instead of one-offs like most of my mods, in order to minimize shipping costs of parts and my time involved in creating the wiring and other elements.
UPDATE: After thinking about it, I might be able to design the mod with a custom 3D printed bracket that would remove the necessity to cut a notch of of the plastic. Seeing how I'm sure most everyone would prefer not to have to cut their plastic or to track down an extra one, I'm going to start working on a design (no promises at this point, however).
