Here are a few pictures on the LCD smooth animations... the colors look better in person.

#8103 5 years ago

Wow I gotta admit it looks better than most. Might need to set mine for Hi Res!

#8104 5 years ago

The monochromatic (big word for one color, makes me feel smarter ) display, probably regardless of the machine, really didn't do the artists any favors. But they probably thought it was the best thing since sliced bread back then. Color really brings things out for a more enjoyable experience, at least in my case anyway. On my JD, there were things I didn't even notice until I went color. Prior, details just kinda got lost in the shuffle with all the same color dots.

But certainly agree with anyone keeping everything running with stock or OEM - just like the people restoring cars. Plus cost is a factor too, it all adds after awhile, especially if you combine with a PinSound too!

Agreed but the ColorDMD cost difference between an LCD display and an LED display is only $30

Yeah, I was referring to ColorDMD + Pinsound...so that adds up to about $800 in upgrades.

PinSound will be my 1st upgrade tho. I have a LCD in JD, and couldn't be happier - I'd get the same for HS2.

#8107 5 years ago

First of all LCD Hires mode never really looks good. IMO. My LCD's are on DotsXL. I bought them because they were more expensive so i assumed they would be better. Now that i have both, LED lights up better and brighter and on an older game like HS2 looks really legit like something that might be expected to come with it. That said once you have it in your hands both are fine.

I haven't tried the HiRes mode on JD, I should give that a spin once. Wife likes the LCD, she supports the hobby entirely (plays more than me cause I'm stuck at work too often)...so her call in the end. Happy Pinball Wife, Happy Pinball Life!

Many of us started with ratted out Getaways. For me, it was great since it was really the source of me learning as much as I do now about pinball, and helping with the enjoyment of the hobby. Really not about comparing who's is better/nicer. Rather, it's about being part of the club.

As required to be 'in the club', my most recent purchase pics. Anything I can do about the Diamond Plate over the inserts other than an overlay or new PF? Doesn't really bother me...not yet, but I do tend to be picky w/the pins.

Great pics, and lots of potential. I really can't speak to your DP insert issue (I have a little myself, but not to this extent). I'd say give it a good cleaning and a few coats of wax to see how well she cleans up. I notice you also have a few paint issues (not nearly what I had), so if/when you are ready to tackle those touch ups I'm happy to share what I did (actually, I'm sure I posted everything earlier in the forum).

Just joined the club myself! Dropped in a brand new OrangeDMD to showcase the dots! Excited to find this all original(besides LEDs) no fade Getaway.

I bought all new rottendog for my boards on Sunday because my game would not boot. They will be here tomorrow and I got the game to work yesterday : / . Do I install all the new boards and sell the old ones or return the new ones for 15percent restocking fee?

Probably better off cash wise to sell them on again in the market rather than cop a 15% fee, you'd have to suss the math on that one though. Personally i'd stick with original boards wherever possible, my experience with Rotten boards in the past has been checkered Some people have no trouble with them and others have been "annoyed". So what ended up being the issue??

Quoted from Pinless:

I didn't do anything, I was showing my brother how it did not work when I plugged in the ribbon cables and it worked. He was going to try to help me figure it out but just having him in the room did it. Seems to be holding up still I wish I knew what it was.

Was it possible you had at least one of the ribbon cables upside down or not seated on all the pins. It's really easy to seat them sometimes with just one row inserted, i've done it before

#8120 5 years ago

Certainly possible but I did unplug and plug them back in several times over the last week, It was always blowing fuses before. I did remove most of the jumpers from the board and put them back in but I didnt change where they went or fix and plugs. I am still not completely out of the mess yet as the supercharger is not working but the rest of the game played great so I am sure that will be easier to track down.

I really like the black powdercoat, great job!
This is also the first Getaway I see installed with this alternate translite. I'm still unsure which one I'll be buying. Thanks for sharing!

Looks great jsyj!

I went with the same theme as well. Loving this game especially with the pinsound mix options. A big thanks has to go out to a few guys here who are so dedicated to helping with issues and mods etc in this thread. Tantrum, mustang to name a couple but there are lots more!
I wish it were the same guys on all the machines I own in the threads!
A few before/during and after resto pics of my little beauty! Sorry for bad lighting with the finished shots hard to photograph with the leds.
Still some tweaking to do.

I found the threads here on Pinside and sold my damaged boards. You can get a little money, but the best thing is knowing that a skilled person will repair the board and put it back into circulation.

#8125 5 years ago

As far as the alternate translite for me the hang up is the car, not poo-pooing anyone who has it since I do think the design is great and overall very well done. However, do the same scene but with an era Lamborghini Diablo, and I’m 100% in.

Does anyone know who created this and if they would be open to changing the car?

My DMD has been losing power intermittently lately and I think it has to do with this toasty DMD controller board.

Would you repair or replace it? Any advantages to keeping an original board over an aftermarket?

Replacement rottendog is only 95 bucks! Im the wrong guy to ask tho I bought all new boards when some fuses blew.

Rottendog boards have been fine for me. You could also just go color DMD.

That board is pretty toasty, not to say it couldn't be repaired, but if it were me I would buy a new one and hang onto that just in case.

No, you actually unplug the high voltage pin because you don't need it on the ColorDMD, well at least that's the case for the LCD model.

Right, both LED and LCD run off the 5v from J116 on the power board, and the power from the DMD board is unused.

Thanks for the heads up. I wasn’t planning on upgrading to a colorDMD so soon, but I can make a convincing argument that upgrading now makes fiscal sense.

If you can find someone with a newer Stern LED dmd cheap, those are a good replacement as well if you can't swing a Color DMD.

#8138 5 years ago

Great, now I’m going to lose sleep over the LED vs LCD decision

#8139 5 years ago

You won’t go wrong either way, but if you’re torn, get the LCD. It will do dots and the various smoothing modes, and Getaway actually looks really good in HiRes.

#8140 5 years ago

I have had good success replacing the following parts four 47k ohm resistors, three large 5 watt resistors (120, 1.8k and 4.7k ohms)
They are easy to check with your DMM set to resistance. They are very inexpense.

Time for another shameless plug. I just had to buy some more keychain blanks for an order, so now I have several extras. For all of you newbie Getaway owners (the old timers have seen this before), I'm offering custom made Getaway themed keychains (I can also do your other pins if interested). The cost is $8 including shipping (I can fit 3-4 in the same envelope, so each additional keychain shipped in the same envelope is $3).

Here are my Getaway designs, but again I can make for just about any pin. Please PM me if you have interest.

Option 1: Backglass

Option 2: Backglass with speakers and Williams on DMD
2.jpg2.jpg

Option 3: Backglass with speakers and your custom high score initials on DMD

That DMD board is easy to repair if you are some what handy with a soldering iron. Replace the filter caps and clean/remove old solder in the lower section and add fresh new solder. The part get hot in the area and usually create cold solder joints (which you can see in the picture posted).

Of course if you would just rather have a new board, you can't really go wrong there.

I bought a Rotten Dog DMD board about a year or two ago, and have never looked back (of course, I'm not really using it now since my DMD went bad and I installed my PIN2DMD).

Rookie(ish) question. Finally starting to put some real work into a Getaway I picked up months ago. I am planning to do a rebuild on my flippers and noticed there are FL-11630 coils installed both in the bottom left and right. Should I bother replacing these or are they strong enough?

Right now I have enough strength to hit all shots, but it certainly could use a bit more. Assuming my rebuild will help a bit. Just not sure if I should also go for the coils too, while I'm at it.

The Getaway was originally released with the 30,s but they did make a change later on and changed them to the 29,s as they felt the shots werent up to par. I changed mine from 30s to 29s and its amazing . Go for it !!

29’s ordered, thanks for the tip!

What’s the best way to fix airballs caused by hitting the center red, yellow, and green targets? Is there a way to adjust them? Or a particular angle they should be set at?

Check the target foam and make sure it's not missing or blown out. Put new foam in. If the targets lean backwards, they airball more.

Just picked up a getaway today. It's missing the whole super charger / red line sign. Looks like it was broke off and they just removed the whole thing. I can find the replacement plastic but I cant find the bulb assembly /Brackets. Anyone every replaced this part before or have an idea where to look?
