Hey guys, just finished a restore/major touch up on my Genie backglass. Imo Genie has one of the best back glasses ever but this one was hurting. Like most, the reds were mostly gone or ready to flake off and the skin tones were starting to flake.

Let me start by saying that there may be better ways to do this but this was the most budget friendly experiment. My thoughts were to try to airbrush the worst parts with a translucent paint. As you can see it was pretty bad. I decided to completely remove all of the red from "GENIE" as a test to see if this would work.

I painted "GENIE" first and was really happy with the outcome, even when back lit.

FYI, I am using createx translucent airbrush paints. I did have to use a couple non translucent paints which I reduced.

Lots of tedious scraping with a small razor and pick

Here's what the back looked like after some of the red work and skin tone work.

For the skin tone I started with createx transparent peach. It was pretty damn close. Didn't take much mixing to get the color right.

Any paint that was loose or flaking got scraped off.

I went back over the colors with a light reduced spray of white, that way when back lit the repaired areas weren't jumping out at me.

2 of my score display windows were pretty bad. I decided to scrape the turquoise silk screening off after a failed attempt at using reduced translucent turquoise paint. The transparent paint, even though it was greatly reduced was more cloudy than clear. So for now the windows are clear. I did order transparent turquoise vinyl so I'll update you guys when it comes to let you know how it looks. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0723CXZMK/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr2_2

With the airbrush work done, I heat set the paint, then taped off the score display windows and shot the bg with triple thick. Any mistakes with createx paint are easy to erase until it's heat set.

Really happy with the outcome pre back lit.

Back lit looks really good too. Much better in person. The picture doesnt do it justice. Thinking about color changing leds for the genie smoke. I consider it a victory, the game is back to the glory days of old. Hope this helps someone out. A little before and after back lit

How much time do you have invested start to finish? Looks good.

Thanks Mike, probably a solid 12-14 hrs. Scraping the paint off took more time than anything. Better than buying a new one though and way cheaper

Wow, that looks wonderful. Do you think you could do the same thing with my Genie backglass? Most of it looks fine, but the bright red on the wizard and the word "Genie" has cracked and and separated forming a pattern of lines instead of a solid red like is should be.

Hmmm...did you use triple thick before? I'm going to do a back glass at some point.

Ya the red seems to be the issue on these backglasses. The red on my game was turning to dust. Since yours is just the red it would be a good candidate. Scrape off as much red as possible, then transparent red mixed with a little orange

I didn't triple thick before because I was removing large areas of the red flaking paint. If the bg was flaking everywhere I think TT would be a good idea before you start. I did TT after I heat set the repairs. If you are just wanting to fix the reds this was a complete success. The red looks incredible. The skin tones were tougher to get right but I'm very happy with the before and after.

Also, this is probably obvious, but never tape off areas of the backglass. You will have even more areas to repair after you remove the tape. I may have done this once. Dohhh

Ok thanks!
