I don't see it being a problem and would look nicer if the plastic extended further. Doesn't appear to be an area with heavy ball strikes.

I ordered the carriage bolts as well. Thanks for the info. Local hardware store doesn't carry them.

I believe the way you have it rubbered is the correct way, I think the extra star post is for plastic support? Any thoughts from someone else?
