Can we finally put that one to bed yet? I can prove it.
Otaku donation hoax never happened, not even close.
Me buying a pinball machine at Pinfest so soon asking for money was naive and shitty, but it wasn't the donation money. Totally separate. I had already blown the $660 on dehumidifers, shop vac, several gallons of dry-lok and paint, and other accessories pretty shortly after I received it. Here, I'll attach a picture of the white drylok and the red paint on top of it. Did two or more coats of each over the entire basement... it added up quick. Stuff is $50 a gallon, it's crazy.
I actually just discovered this post for the first time which actually says it pretty well and backs up what I've been saying all along. Like, to a tee.
It was stupid & naive not to pay the people back when I had a random influx of money shortly after from repairing pinball machines for people like djreddog (picture attached in original post actually, which is helpful), but it was entirely seperate. I made like $1,200 shortly after fixing pinball and arcade machines for a few different guys, and it came oddly quick and unexpectedly (if I had known it was coming, I'm sure I wouldn't have made the thread). I'm actually really glad I found this post, as much as I cringe to read it. I even noted how I immediately removed the PayPal link once I received the income.
Nobody ever claimed I stole anything until somebody misheard the situation years later (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_whispers), I was just bashed a bit for not paying people back with my newfound income. I should've paid people back for sure, but the first two or three people just said pay it forward, so I stopped asking because I thought I may be offending people by insisting I return their donations (like returning a gift - I was still figuring things out mind you) and did that. Again, I was still figuring things out and if I did it now (which I wouldn't do now at all), I would've forced the payments back whether they wanted to accept them or not. I was naive, but not a thief in any amount, shape, or form, nor were the funds misused whatsoever... not even a cent.
I'm actually happy I found this quote for the first time as it backs up everything I've been screaming to the heavens for the past 3 years perfectly... It's a very naive quote and not something I'm proud of, but specifically separates the donations and Pinfest, so there's that. By the time I finished the basement shortly after writing that, said separate account was empty to the point of where I put a few bucks of my own money to finish buying the gallons... there was not a single cent of those donations that didn't go to that basement, and there's been picture proof on here for years. Jesus.
I remember actually spending the money before the $1,200 came through from PayPal into my bank (takes a few days), so there wasn't even an overlap in funds... by the time the $1,200 personal money arrived, the $660 was already gone and spent on the basement. I sleep well at night!
Make fun of my fundraisers all you want (which are a commonplace thing in today's society for even more petty reasons than you could imagine), but I have never come close to being a thief or misusing funds... ever. Just saying. Nor have any of those fundraisers been posted here by me
Quote from the very original thread (16 upvotes! People still loved me back then):
Quoted from Otaku:Hey guys, just an update. Together we have raised $660.00 in donations to help fund my basement repairs. My family has decided with this amount plus my own contributions (and their own of course) that they will get the repairs done by a professional, we will be contacting the company spfxted posted as well as another my dad knows personally and compare quotes.
I feel very blessed, this month alone an abnormal amount of repairs were needed by my older clients and new clients I seeked out combined with a willingness to accept all of them and work very very long days, I really stepped up working hard at my own business and fixed as much as I can and ended up bringing in over $1,200 and counting this month from things I taught myself over the last few years, like complicated PCB repair for arcade machine monitors and also doing more pinball work across EM to SS this month alone. The donations and help were very necessary due to the severity and suddenness of the situation and I couldn't of got the games out of there without the help of Boob's Escalera either, and all of the support both through words and donations really motivated me just to increase the amount so I could contribute to the cause just as much as other people have been so generous.
I have removed my PayPal account e-mail from the original post and want to thank you all very much, no longer accepting donations. With Pinfest coming up I want there to be no confusion, all of the donations are stored away in a separate account. With even more repairs beginning to be underway and my own money already being contributed to the cause as well in a similar amount to the donations received, I decided to give myself a little spending budget of money I earned later in the month and continue to earn as Pinfest approaches - but obviously this includes $0.000 of any donation money, so just making sure there is no confusion.
