Funny, I restored one of these a few months ago for a friend. The plate had not been coated with anything prior, and was used at the bar to poor drinks on. Over time, I had gotten somewhat ugly. To clean up the peace, I went at it with a wire brush to clean up the grooves, then used a scuff pad to remove the scale. My original intent was to just paint it black, but decide an engine turn like finish would be better. I used a scuff pad on a DA and went at the surface randomly to achieve the desired effect.
