Remember how easy it was for the NK to slay a dragon last season; I’m sure Daenarys nor Jon wanted to rinse/repeat that. They played it cautious, at least that’s how I felt. Then Jon got all pissed off balls to the wall and went after the NK and almost cost Daenarys another dragon. So yea, dragons vs whitewalkers = not a good idea.

I wondered about that. She almost lost 2 dragons last time. Its such high risk to take them out. I don't blame her for not bringing them out first. I think it was only with the realization she lost all her Dothraki, the pain was too great to not take them out then.

Man, you guys are hard to please. I thought it was a great episode. It didn't have the visceral feeling of the Battle of the Bastards, but it really felt like it was for all the marbles - very epic. It was dark, but not that dark - it was at night in a blizzard, so seemed like the decisions made sense. I've got a pretty standard Samsung and thought it looked fine even with some compression issues, and I'm on an absolute shit internet connection.

I think Arya killing the Night King would've been done better if she had somehow taken the appearance of one of his higher ranking officers or something like that since such a move was her trademark in earlier seasons. The way it was done was straight out of a Jet Li movie.

#406 6 months ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

Song of Fire and Ice, right in the title.
Will be the dragon queen or John Snow on the throne.
Of course at this point the show is following its own course so the novels might not apply.

The story is about more than just Jon and Dany in terms of ice and fire. Itd be a bit too on the nose for them to end up on the throne, and that's the one thing this show/books doesn't do. The story can still be about them if they don't win.

Gotta have a dead body to take the face to be able to wear the face. This is going to be the trick she uses to kill Cersei.

The books yes, but the show after the books left off, no. The internet is full of fan theories and plot twist that they think might happen but I bet the show will continue as it has lately, very straight forward and predictable. Benioff and Weiss are writing hacks. I'm sure they have used focus groups of the "average" viewers to get just the right feel good ending. It's like listening to clear channel "corporate" radio stations.

If they had balls they would give us an unpopular ending that would poll poorly with the focus groups.
Hell, in the next episode bring back Deloris Edd. Show that he was just seriously wounded or faking, and it turns out there is a lot more to that guy and he Keyser Soze their asses as he wins the Game of Thrones.

#DelorisEddwinsGOT.

It seemed "that dark" to me. Maybe my eyes are failing me as I get older. I have a newer 4K Samsung but it didn't seem to help me. This whole idea by the younger directors and cinematographers that want to be authentic to the blizzard or night with natural light is crap. Or removing the "steady" from the steadycam to show hectic battles. It might be ok for a few minutes but not for the whole episode. Take a lesson from Spielberg in the opening minutes of Saving Private Ryan.

I would rather be able to see the damn show than it be authentic. What's next, a black screen for the upcoming Stevie Wonder flick? "Experience the life story through the eyes of a musical legend."

They could've had Jon kill one earlier in the episode? I don't know, but somehow she should've been able to get close thanks to her assassin skills rather than just going Crouching Tiger on him.

You're not the only one. Maybe they'll release a not-dark version someday - which would pretty much be admitting they f-ed it up.

Not going to lie, when the show was over I wasn't sure if Jon's dragon had lived or died until I saw the promo for the next show. Maybe that was just bad editing, but dunno.

I was reading the Star Wars Last Jedi thread and I sorta noticed some similarities. Like things not getting explained because hey, they're dead now so who cares. Will we ever get the backstory of the white walkers in any detail? Who raises Craster's baby white walkers? Or do they instantly become old bearded dudes? Is there no motivation other than to wipe out the living? Then what? There is still a whole lot to explain and very little time to do it.

Also, anyone notice lately that the men have turned weak and stupid and the women are getting stronger and smarter? It's got a Last Jedi feel to it is all I'm saying.

#413 6 months ago
Quoted from vireland:

At least there are two more books.

Yeah....right.

I thought the best scene was when the Hound was having an anxiety attack, and tells Dongarian it's hopeless and gives up. Dongarian points to Arya, and the Hound springs into action.

That rocked.

Very little time to do it? We will see more TV Shows in the Game of thrones universe! They have all the time they want. https://mashable.com/2018/06/08/game-of-thrones-prequel-hbo/?europe=true :
"The series will take place during the "Age of Heroes," thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. HBO stated that the show will reveal "the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to [and] the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know."

Thrones fans can officially get hype, because the Age of Heroes is when the Long Night, the first clash between humanity and the original White Walkers took place, meaning the show may finally answer how the humans beat them last time, as well as showing how they built the Wall to keep them out. "

I actually watched episode 3 a second time tonight and enjoyed it again
Maybe it’s because of my preparations attached in the pics.

Have not followed any of this. Hopefully they consult with George RR Martin. Because they really suck without his direction.

I don’t think that Dan and Dave will have anything to do with the prequel series. HBO and George are bringing this into fruition, and George has written a couple extra books in the last couple years detailing the history of the Targaryens and first men.

Fat man needs to hurry up before a heart attack takes him out.

Rumor has it there was only suppose to be an original book or two, but after the first took off and publisher pulled up with a truck load of money things changed. An editor I chat with frequently said George's problem is one that often strikes down epic series writers is the characters get away from their creator and they run out of gas. The editor also noted very few writers are able to pull this off, Tolkien being used as an example. Unless you have a clear vision start to finish when you start putting it down on paper, things get sideways in a hurry.

All that build up over the seasons of white walkers and it's over in one battle episode.? Why am I feeling like "what was the point" of walkers in this show altogether. I think I would have liked the show more without the fantasy parts. The first several seasons were so much better.

The funny part of this is the whole "Who raises babe white walkers" is the kind of mundane shit Martin usually gets into. He's known for his overly descriptive feasts and everything being served at them.

As for motivation, they kind of glossed over it in the show, but the Children of the Forest created them to kill all the First Men who were invading Westeros and killing the Children/trees. It backfired.

I absolutely agree... GOT is a great great show without the whole white walker storyline. They focused very little on them for most of the series and that was a good thing IMO. Once they became the focal point here recently I started to lose that warm fuzzy feeling and the GREATNESS that made GOT was lost. In fact they could have done without the whole weird Bran Journey as well.

GOT will always be one of my all time favorites without question but the walking dead aspect of the show did absolutely nothing for me. Correction, it did do something for me but in a negative way. Here's to hoping the last three episodes get back to what made the show great in the first place!

Plenty of HBO money for the prequels and spin offs to explain all this stuff....

I rewatched it again. What killed the red witch? She just sort of Luke Skywalkered herself.
I came up with way more criticisms after the second viewing. What a mess.

She was like 900 years old. Her necklace was what was keeping her alive and maintaining the glamour about her to make her look young. She took it off once earlier in the series a few seasons ago, and we saw what she really looked like. She just died of being old after taking the necklace off.

I remember all that. But she didn't die last time when she took it off. And for that matter, why did she take it off? Its like Luke and taking off his robe. Her story arc was over so she just lost the will to live? Oh well. I guess I'm extra critical because I really liked this series a lot.

Yeah, plot hole? I don't know. Her life was dedicated to finding Azor Ahai and stopping the Long Night. With that mission accomplished (after several major screwups), she was done. It seemed like the Lord of Light was reluctant to give her any power to light the trenches, and so when it was done, perhaps he also saw her job was done, and his power left her to die.

#428 6 months ago

I think they just have so many key characters that they don't know how to write an ending to the story for all of them.

Plus they're WAY rushing. They could easily put more intrigue into it and do 2 more seasons. Problem is, they don't have the writing chops to do it well, so they're trying to get it over with.

I think you lost that warm fuzzy feeling because the episodes with Walkers were not like the "Medieval Days of Our Lives". I like the way it is turning out and I like the story turning the page with some fantasy. If Dragons are cool-so are White Walkers. I can only handle so much soft porn and drama-I need some Walkers getting their heads chopped off.

After season 5 or 6 I watched an interview with the show creators, Dan and dave. At that time they commented how HBO wanted LOTS MORE Game of Thrones, but they were running out of steam on the project ant wanted to see the ending in 8 seasons. Not long after that we started to hear mention of “spinoffs”. Turns out that the spinoffs were in fact going into pilot production and are prequels to the story.

Quoted from bladerunner:

You do understand that a prequel is BEFORE our current story, none of the same characters involved. The end has been written, but what about the beginning? The 1st prequel is going to be called The Long Night (same as the title of the last episode; #3). This could show us the fight with the first men and the children of the forest, the creation of the white walker, how they drove him back last time. It could detail the first Starks, or the creation of winterfell.

Another prequel could be the doom of Valyria. How dragons were trained and then ultimately wiped out.

How about the story’s of Duncan and egg? There’s enough for another series there.

You’ll get more.

I hate that aspect of prequels... "the end has been written".

Like, there can never be a threat of White Walkers again destroying the world, because we KNOW it never happened, they were beaten back to behind the wall. Do I need to see the wall get built? Not really.

Yep, probably... to each their own as they say. To me the whole white walker story line 'cheapened' or 'dampened' (not sure of the right word really) the greatness of GOT but I get that many will love it. I don't need more of the Walking Dead... I can definitely handle a few dragons, the Red Women and the Warlocks of Qarth but an army of a bazillion frozen dead people that we were told were unstoppable yet were wiped out in one episode? No thank you...

Make GOT Great Again!

I think the white walkers have always been the "B" plot. Just like the title says, it's all about the game of thrones. Everything else is just distractions. But this is just the TV show.

The books are a song of fire and ice. I'm going to assume the books wont follow the same events as the show for their ending

The only way to kill the Walkers was with Valerian Steel or Dragon Glass and when stabbed they shatter into cubes of ice (as we already knew from Sam killing one). Pretty sure Arya's assassin skills do not allow her to wear a face of ice cubes...

In my opinion, Arya is the single most lethal person in the show. That fight scene between her and Brienne was amazing.

If you get a chance to watch the making of the long night I would recommend it. It's 40 minutes long and shows what they went though to shoot the last episode. Initially I was disappointed in the episode however I have a new found appreciation for it. Think it took 55 nights in the dark to film that episode. Pretty neat to see how they did some of the special effects.

#449 6 months ago

Jon gives Tormund and Sam a hug, but Ghost doesn't even get a pat? I think the worst thing the show has done is kill the tie between Jon and Ghost. The two are almost inseparable in the books. Ghost is the dog that every boy dreams of having when he's a kid, but they just cast him aside like he's a red headed stepchild.

I've seen every episode prior to this season at least twice, a few of them more than that. But, I'll probably never watch S.8Ep.4 ever again. I'm happy the series is ending, D & D have run it into the shitter.

#450 6 months ago

Yeah the ghost business is complete garbage. Why not fly around and light the fleet up from the back? How did she not see the ship's from the sky? That would make sense, and this show is quickly falling apart as we hit the end.
