Just implemented the original fix in this thread - works great! Registers 100%, up from about 40% previously. It is a little harder to hit, but the trade off is more than fair. I wish I hadn't put it off so long, it really did take less than 10 min.

Do it! I easily got up to 4x playfield on my first game. Don't think I'd ever had higher than 2x previously.

Lube was tried. It only seemed to help for a few games.
I haven't looked into any of the other fixes proposed in this thread though.
