Hey. Future Spa owners and friends...-
A friend, Big B...has a FS that works for 4-5 games.. then shuts down.... Any thoughts on this..??. We are going this weekend to help him figure something out..
Any things to check for this.... Voltages.. Transformer.. Overheating somewhere or something. ..
We will test tonight and see how long it stays off before rebooting.. Thanks for any help .....
NT
Quoted from NicToria:A friend, Big B...has a FS that works for 4-5 games.. then shuts down
Does it stay down, or reboot?
Ok,, Just played 5 games.. It shuts down sorta... It drains the ball.. The scores keep adding up.... Then tries to reboot. Does... Starts a game.... then shuts back down..... Lights on.. NO displays and unable to start another game.... ?????????
THX>
2nd test. It goes on for 5-6 minutes... Then shuts down and starts back up. There is a a green light on the top left board the flashes until the game reboots itself. There is click sound that comes from the voltage regulator or solenoid driver board....top right board in the back box. We shut the power off to the game, and it is not hot but warm to the touch.
Sounds pretty standard and not specific to Future Spa. What's could be happening is your MPU board is not getting consistent voltage, so it resets or locks up.
Likely culprits are power driver board (bottom right of the head), solenoid driver board (upper right board) or a connector somewhere. Here's a link to a repair guide if you feel like tackling the problem yourself. I'd follow this and check for voltages at the test points.

Quoted from NicToria:It goes on for 5-6 minutes... Then shuts down and starts back up.
So it's rebooting
Quoted from NicToria:There is a a green light on the top left board the flashes until the game reboots itself.
Normal, should be 7 flashes.
Quoted from NicToria:There is click sound that comes from the voltage regulator or solenoid driver board....top right board in the back box.
Normal, that is the relay.
Quoted from NicToria:it is not hot but warm to the touch.
Good.

So if you have a meter, you can see what the voltages are.
I'd guess you 5v cap needs to be replaced at minimum.

Salut,
I have a question about the Future Spa outline gate.
This gate is making a lot of noise when it is active. I have seen this on several Future Spa already, so it seems to be a common behavior.
You can hear it clearly on the PAPA video of Future Spa.
(starting at 2:22).
Is there any way/tweak to avoid this (apart from avoiding the gate opens in the game ) ?
It is a quite annoying noise and completely destroys the ambiance of the game.
Any hints appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
flugs
Quoted from Atomicboy:I've always wanted one of these.
Me too. Dave Christensen & Paul Faris artwork on the same game GIMME!!!
I bought a Future Spa really cheap a while ago.
Unfortunately it looks really well used also, so lots of work to do.
The most peculiar thing though was that it is missing the innlane/ oulane gate mech. The whole thing is gone. Coil and bracket for it also.
Anyone know what I could do? Am I totally screwed or is there a way to order similar parts and get it to work.
Also, anyone know if cpr(or anyone else) has done Future spa repro playfield in that past or are planning on doing it? A new playfield would be nice
I've never seen any news about a playfield - CPR just got the stuff to do widebodies and Paragon is up. Pinball Pimp just released cabinet stencils though.
Thanks. I have had Paragon on pre-order for almost 15 months. So if they do decide to do Future Spa, it will be a while to wait, I would imagine
Bump regarding the innlane/Outlane mech.
Would really appreciate it if anyone has any recommendations to fix this. Is the coil bracket standard, or is it custom made for this game?
No point doing lots of work on it if it is impossible to fix, I guess
The gate itself should be possible to find a solution for, since it does not have to be the original gate to work, I would believe.
Man, I really suck at this stuff. Why must I enjoy these all games so much

I'm looking at this to replace mine...

I've been thinking about buying a sheet but after adding some ultra bright, blue LEDs, I'm not sure if I want the prism effect. The LEDs look very cool.
I was just watching the Pinburgh video of the
FUTURE SPA Pinball Table (Bally 1979) - Pinburgh 2011 Division B Final Game 3 (Part 1)
And I noticed that the two middle lanes on the left are setup
Kickback lane - Outlane/Inlane- Inlane - Inlane
My FS is set up like this:
Kickback lane - Outlane - Outlane/Inlane - Inlane
Which is the original configuration?
By gum you're right. Never noticed that and I have watched that video several times. Modified for tournament use? Weird for sure. The "Gate Open" arrow location makes me think someone changed that game up. I wonder why?
Quoted from Mk1Mod0:Should look like this... kickback - out - in/out - in
Interesting.. Mine is like the Pinburgh video.
So the gate 'open' is suppose to make 2 outlanes?
That seems like punishment for making a specific shot. My guess is that is wrong.. although I think its great for making the game harder.
To be clear my gate is straight up and down by default and opens to the left to close the outline when the gate is open.
The red outlane stays open the entire time.
The gate should be closed like Mk1Mod0's at the start of the game to make two outlanes and open once a "T or "U" upper rollover is completed to create two inlanes. It resets once the outer inlane has been rolled over and you have to rollover the T or U again to open it back up.
There should be two nails there that restrict the gates movement underneath the two wireforms. (Inlanes.)
Playing Future Spa with THREE left inlanes is cheating, which means no boob shower for you Troutfarm!

thanks! pretty happy with this one!

Is that playfield clearcoated? I love, love, love this game but I've passed on a few decent ones holding out for one as nice as yours to come along.

It is not cleared. Just a really nice original.. there are only a couple little spots that need help and I just touched them up last night. looks great now.
Future Spaians,
I was lucky enough to find a really nice Future Spa but it had lots of small issues. I have been fixing these issues, one by one, and I am really beginning to enjoy the game play.
I am missing whatever magic holographic piece goes on the back of the backglass and in front of the 'Future Spa' lamps in the backbox. I am considering ordering this as a substitute:
8"X25" Diffraction Grating Roll Sheet Double Axis 13,500 l/mm Physics Light
ebay.com link: 8 X25 Diffraction Grating Roll Sheet Double Axis 13 500 l mm Physics Light
Has anyone tried this particular item? Will the diffraction grating give the same or similar effect of the original backglass?
I unexpectedly joined this club 2 weeks ago tonight. I was laying in the couch, 6 beers into my night, and spotted a super good deal on a Future Spa. I contacted the seller and immediately drove over to her house. The game had been sitting in her garage for over 10 years and she just wanted it gone.
It was dirty, but worked 100%! I've spent the last couple weeks cleaning, re-rubber'ing and installing LED bulbs. Usually I don't like color LED on the games of the 70's, but this game really looks good with color.
Anyway, just super to join the Future Spa group.

Finally found a source for the "twinkle" effect film on the Future Spa backglass!
Looks perfect when lights are in motion. Local dude helped me source a small roll, I will be cutting some sheets to size, anyone let me know if they need some, I can list some for sale in the marketplace as well for anyone else that is looking!
Quoted from Brich:Finally found a source for the "twinkle" effect film on the Future Spa backglass!
Future Spa pro tip:
Use blue incandescents behind the diffused logo to give it a richer; more sparkle-y zazz.

*Future Spa Police megaphone*
Step away from the technicolor LED bin sir! Drop those purple passions and put your hands on your head. What you are doing is a crime against pinmanity...

Would love to see it in person, led always looks extreme in photos.

I'll probably need one of these, I've been messing with a future spa restore/customize on and off for a couple years now and don't know if I have this or not on my backglass (I boxed it up).
Most of the time the diffuser just falls off due to the age of the game and is either quietly sitting in the head, or the bottom cab, buried under old bulbs, rubber, coil dust, etc...
Clean it off, double-sided tape it and you're good to go for another 38 years.

Then mine is most likely gone, the cabinet was in shambles, so I found another to repaint and restore.
No worries then, seems like Brich has found a suitable replacement so you should be good to go.
eBay has similar stuff available if and when he runs out.
Googling "transparent holographic film" will also give you a bunch of options to use.
Just picked up a Future Spa finally after a long search...the cabinet art has been painted over in red and the white on the headbox is now black. I must've breathed on the backglass when I was carrying it and bits of artwork were flaking off everywhere
The playfield is quite nice and the previous owner has replaced targets, bumper caps, rubbers and plunger springs. It's just missing the rectifier mounting plate and transformer cage. The rectifier is sitting in a plastic bag on top of the transformer...the previous owner did this so it wouldn't short out...yikes! So, if anyone can help me out with a cage for the transformer or the mounting plate for the rectifier board that would be great...oh and maybe a backglass if you have one spare...doesn't have to be anything flash just not as bad as mine.
I am looking for this assembly to Future Spa, i belive it was also used for several other games.
Anyone?

They pop up on ebay pretty regularly. Try a couple different search terms. I've seen them labeled gates, lane changers and switchers.

Quick update.
PBR to the rescue. They had a used whole Mech in stock.
Future spa will be saved!
Here is my club membership application. This machine was a really nice example I picked up several months ago and just finished this week. When I first got it I was hesitant to put too many games on it since it had pretty much zero playfield wear.
We stripped the top, repaired artwork and keylines and then I clearcoated it. All those large inserts took a while to fully fill and seal. It was 5-6 applications of 2PAC and then the final 3-4 coats that was sprayed. It has new drops/pops, etc. Original spinner artwork was repaired and then clearcoated to keep them looking nice going forward.

Joining the Future Spa club today. Here is my new addition:
Playfield was a NOS brought into a HUO situation some years ago. Seems to also have new assemblies. I'm new to classic Bally SS so I'm learning in real-time.
Anyone have any idea what the battery with wires soldered into the test pads is about? Is that a thing? (horrified to hear answer)

You guys are killing me with the beautiful Spa's! I want one of these so badly I can taste it. And it tastes mighty peculiar, especially the guy with the speedo and wine glass.

I'm more concerned about the dude in the hot tub. Where are his hands?

This took me a few more moments of thought to figure it out. Battery connectors were removed, wires soldered in place, and then the wires soldered to a NiCad battery. It obviously was keeping the scores and settings, and no corrosion on a board, so someone was protecting it. I mistakenly thought the solder points were test pads.
