In playing a game, playfield lights on Gottlieb Bonanza, flickered and went out, reached in to wiggle fuse.....very hot, but lights did come back on. Loose fuse cause this to heat up?

Yes it would. Bad connection higher resistance and heat.

You have the correct fuse?

Replace the fuse holder. And put a new fuse in (of the right kind of course). You need a good mechanical connection.
