Game - for sale

FS: Working Projects: 2 Gottlieb The Games & spare playfield

Added: 2016-05-26 04:16:40 UTC • Ended: June 9th, 2016
Condition: Functional - needs major work

Price

$ 800

I have two examples of Gottlieb "The Games", plus a spare playfield with almost all the parts. $800--buyer takes all. Easy pick-up, no stairs. I can help with loading into your vehicle.

This title was designed for the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Both games are projects. The original plan was to swap cabinets and use the spare playfield to make one nicer game and one player's condition game.

Between the games, there is one nice backglass, one decent cabinet, and one decent playfield. The playfields have some of the typical wear around the inserts, but the spare playfield is the nicest. The spare playfield is missing a pop bumper board and the vari-target, but otherwise appears to be complete. One cabinet is a little dinged up, and the corner of one backbox was repaired using angle brackets. The other backglass is flaking along the bottom third of the glass.

Both games boot and play, but have a handful of issues. Details, photos, and quick gameplay videos in the discussion thread.

A few quick photos of the games, which are currently still wrapped up.20160530205129703_(resized).jpg20160530205129703_(resized).jpg20160530205211793_(resized).jpg20160530205211793_(resized).jpg20160530205231449_(resized).jpg20160530205231449_(resized).jpg20160530205239859_(resized).jpg20160530205239859_(resized).jpg20160530205307145_(resized).jpg20160530205307145_(resized).jpg20160530205319244_(resized).jpg20160530205319244_(resized).jpg

I started tinkering with the non-booting game this evening. While everything is disconnected from the transformer, the F2 fuse for the power supply keeps blowing. The filter cap was replaced at some point with a newer Richie-branded cap, and I checked the wiring on the bridge rectifier and finally replaced it since the test results were faulty while it was in-circuit. However, after replacing it, the fuse still blew. The old bridge tested good out of circuit.

I'll likely re-visit it tomorrow unless someone grabs these games before I get to it

Also, the game ROM is missing, so I'll have to burn one after I get the power issue sorted out.

All the boards are clean--no battery damage on the MPU. All the display glasses are intact.

I think I found the problem. To save a screw, a previous owner put the AC return on the same screw as one holding down a cable tie. This screw goes into the case of the transformer panel, which is tied to ground

This was also why the bridge rectifier was giving incorrect readings, since two lugs were effectively tied to ground.

The AC return belongs on the insulated post.

It's alive!

Just a quick test--I can't play very well one-handed.

I ended up replacing some chips on the MPU to get the displays partially working. I'm guessing some repinning on the MPU's J2 and J3 connectors will be needed, as well as a few more chips related to the displays replaced. One of the 7-digit displays isn't working at all--might have to replace the cap on it, since I already replaced the resistor.

Cosmetically, this is probably not the best of the three playfields--it was touched up poorly. I was thinking of swapping the spare playfield into this game before I got too far along with it.

A couple of photos of the nicer backglass

Some areas will need to be superglued and the backglass triple thicked.

There are a few spots where the displays were rubbing against the backglass.

Quoted from amkoepfer:

Is the captive ball supposed to be a single ball or a double ball? I thought i saw on ipdb a double ball so i put 2 in mine. Wonder if i did it wrong

I assumed it was only a single captive ball. Both games came from separate places and they each only had one in place. I had no problems hitting the captive ball and getting it to the top target.

TNT Amusements has a gameplay video available, and I'm pretty sure they only had one ball.

I unwrapped the other game today and fixed a few things.

The game boots and is playable. All the displays appear to work, and all the feature lamps on the playfield appear to work, although a few finicky sockets may need to be replaced. There is a bit more playfield wear on this one than I originally remembered, especially below the rollovers. However, that area is mostly solid black anyway, so repainting/airbrushing that area shouldn't be too complicated.

The backbox needs work--the left side is being held together by angle brackets.

The siderails were removed for some reason and the plastic glass channels were stolen. Since I had a spare set of rails and plastic glass channels, I installed the channels and can include the spare side rails, since the originals are scratched up from someone struggling with cutting off the siderail nails.

The plunger is mushroomed and the assembly needs to be rebuild.

The left and right pop bumpers don't fire. I didn't troubleshoot it very far, so I don't have a guess as to where the problem is. My next step would likely to be to inspect the pop bumper boards for cracked solder joints and maybe swap the known good ones around.

All the boards are clean, except for the power supply. One of the connectors on the power supply is hacked up, and the board is a little crispy. I can include an untested, but clean power supply if you would like.

Both games each include a set of decent legs.

Quoted from amkoepfer:

Ok. Mine only had a single ball as well. Ipdb had it as a double ball and says captive ball (2), but they could just be basing it off of the pics. I think i have a manual and flyer around, ill have to look

I checked the manual, and there was no mentioned of how many captive balls there were.

I also checked one of the TNT videos, and there were two. The flyer shows two as well. So, I guess there are supposed to be two captive balls, then.

Last call before I start ordering parts and shopping out the games myself.

#24 7 years ago

Ok, parts are on order. Looks like I'll be refurbishing at least one of the games. Maybe bringing it to Pintastic and/or putting it on location for a short time after it's done.

Also, I'll likely put up the other game for sale later as a working project by itself.
