This isn't a restore by any stretch, but will be a documentation of bringing this heavily routed Avatar (Pro) back into a very nice player. We will strip the playfield topside and polish/tumble/clean all parts. Bottom will be much of the same of the mechanisms, rebuild the pop assemblies, re-sleeve all coils and repair any issues/broken parts.

Some issues we know: the magnet is popping the fuse, the ball lock mech is missing a screw for one of the pins, the dmd is outgassing, some insert lamp clips were broken and some electrical tape is "securing" them in place. This will all be corrected.

Here's some of the before pics:

Cabinet isn’t too bad but had some chips here and there and fading. No, I’m not doing anything with the cabinet. He will have to tackle that on his own if he wants to.

I can't wait to see it all done. You do awesome work!!!

Just a little back story on this game for those that might be interested. This was owned by the operator where we hold our pinball league. About 3 years ago was when the bar opened where we play. My wife and I stopped in one night to check it out and this Avatar was sitting in the corner. I'm of the age where I grew up on Mortal Kombat and only the old people played pinball at the back of the arcade. I had never played one before.

I decided I would check it out and play a few games. Fast forward about an hour or so, I turned to my wife and said "I'm buying one". That was 12 machines ago.

About 2 years later, we were sitting with the operator discussing the league games and how to mix things up. The Avatar was in the league lineup and he said that it had outlived it's usefulness to him as an earning machine and it was time for it to go. I shot him and offer and bought it. I didn't have any room, so it sat at my buddy's house for the last year.

Dmacy was kind enough to offer to strip it and clean it up for me. The operator had waxed and lightly cleaned it on occasion, but it definitely needs some love.

This was taken when I bought it. I'm not sure how many plays are on it now. Other than when I dropped it off at Dmacy's house over the weekend, I hadn't even seen it or played it in a year.

Let's just say he got his monies worth.

Thanks for sharing that. Pretty cool and overall it’s not in dismal condition.

Not much done the last day or two. Tumbling of the first batch is done which is mostly topside or related hardware.

Great to see this. Most hate this game. Good to see it got played to death on location. And your bringing it back

#12 6 years ago

Very cool.

#13 6 years ago

For all the plays, the Playfield polished up really well. Removed the mylar which wasn’t bad as it’s only at the pop and roll over lanes. It’s now waxed and ready for assembly. We are going to add some blue star and narrow posts so will be a few days for any serious assembly. There’s plenty of underside and misc parts clean up so will post up pics as there’s progress.

So far today:

Looking great Dmacy! I remember when this thing was so dirty, that you couldn't see the extra ball insert through the ramp.

Is that amp suit toy the original one Stern used as well? It looks like a better version with more articulation and detail. Will it directly swap with the old one?

#23 6 years ago
Quoted from Lethal_Inc:

So, yes it is the exact same one but Stern just hard mounts some of the suit with screws. I'll try and get some better pictures but you will be drilling into the new one to use it. Also of note, the ammo is missing on the one in the pin and the new on on his left shoulder. Was thinking it was missing on the pin but there isn't any on the new one either.

At that point clearcoating would have been the cherry on the sunday But you would have had to wait 4 months to put it back together

I put Comet 2 smd clear dome bulbs in all the inserts, makes a world of difference.

Wondering if anyone knows what the individual part numbers (if at all) for one of the metal yokes for this mech. The one closest to the pins is ok. I can make something but would prefer to have an actual part of one exists.

Circled the entire part from manual below.

Progress pictures. One of the allen bolts snapped on the right flipper pawl before it was even starting to tighten up. I guess it isn't just WMS machines this is prone to happening. But it had a non black oxide bolt on that side which I should have realized was going to be an issue.

Ramp cleaned up great; I don't think we will need to do any ramp melting. I mean flame polishing.

Waiting on the parts Grimes found for us that should be here today and then should be able to start testing.

Yeah you can get those Grade 8 cap screws at any hardware store. Coming along nicely.

We ended up lightly flame polishing ramp. New mech parts installled and assembly in place. Flipper mech replaced and installed. Some solder work and should be ready to test.

Looks great. I just got a nice Avatar . I picked up a spring from Stern for the SDTM fix. I did not get any instructions . How did you install it to let the ball pass both ways? Thanks

That spring at the outlet from pop bumpers? If that's it, it was already there. I can get you some close up pics but haven't had hardly any play time on it before to tell you if it helps or not.

Hopefully you can see it ok. Will try and get another picture more specific. Not sure if this is correct, but how it came off. It is under the rubber FWIW.

That wire should be sticking out, that's what deflects the ball, yours is worthless like that.

Thanks. That's how it came off so this is good to know.

We are up and running. All lights and coils working other than what we knew: troubleshooting of magnet coil (F7 blows when plugged in) but should have that figured out shortly. New to the machine DMD installed that's in good shape. Original DMD was still working but was pretty dim and the bottom right.

Few more of the mostly finished machine. Thank you Paul on the spring tip. Anyone have a picture they can show to share how it should be?
